JESMONITE: How to make a TRUE Black and White *Testing 2 methods*

  • Hey lovelies, I am back with a series of Jesmonite videos answering some of the most common questions I get asked.
In this video I am answering the biggest question. How do we get a true Black in Jesmonite? How do we get a true White in Jesmonite.
I am taking you through two methods. Method 1: Eyeballing it. Not recommended but something I am very guilty of.
Method two is following the advice and guidance of Jesmonite and this is the measure accurately. How much Pigment does Jesmonite say we can add ?
I will explain this all in the video.
Jesmonite pigments much be shaken well before use otherwise the pigment settles and you may not get the best results.
Gloves should be worn as the pigment can stain skin however I choose not to. I wash my hands. However, please wear gloves.
I do wear a dust mask when working with Jesmonite. This is NOT negotibale as Jesmonite is a powder and should not be ingested.
Jesmonite and pigments seen in this video can be found at Polysil UK:

I was absolutely sure that your eyeballed black was going to be at least as dark as the measured one. Boy was I surprised 😲 The white on the other hand is a little bit more difficult to judge on my screen. I have to agree with you that the second pour of the eyeballed white is a scoche whiter than the first and your measured mixture. But that could just be my perception as it's a very slight difference.

Hey Claire! Lovely video! Just wondering, I’ve been using the 1:2.5 ratio for some pots but they have really thin walls, and when I poured in my first colour, it always get stuck around the outer walls and that’s very frustrating. I’ve tried changing my ratio to 1:2 so it’s thinner and easier to pour, doing it very slowly and carefully, but still that does happen. Do you have any idea how I could get round this? Also, it happens that some sweating happened to my piece when I left the first colour in to set. How did you manage to not have sweat marks on the first layer? Thank you girl you are amazing with these tutorials❤

    • @ClairesCraftyCorner
      @ClairesCraftyCorner  Před rokem

Heyyyy lovely ... if it has really thin walls you can squish the centre of the mould a bit .. so that the Jesmonite goes down the sides .. but I would mostly tap the mould as I'm pouring.
Also .. if you change the mix ratio it weakens the product so I would try to avoid that one.
As for sweat marks .. I haven't yet learned how to get them out. I did see someone say they dry out and dissappear but mine never have.

  • @DougMilleratWoodSpunRound

I'm still confused by total volume. So, mine is 40g, which equates to 20g of liquid and 50g of powder. (mine is 1:2.5 ratio), so by 2% of the total volume, is that 40g, or 70,?

Re: measurements for when wanting to do a two tone effect ( like the pot vessel) so if I wanted to try this with a trinket tray ( like the ones you use) i divide the total jesmonite required by 2 to create my two batches for each colour then add 2% of colour based on the total mixture used for each batch?
Sorry hope that question makes sense and I haven’t confused you…I know what I’m trying to ask haha it’s like when you did the abstract trinket trays you mixed up different batches of colour & then filled the tray so it’s understanding how the batches are calculated
You may have a tutorial that explains this which I’m not aware of or have missed so please let me know if that’s the case - otherwise if you did a tutorial specific to how you work out stuff when doing multiple colours for the one item would be sooooo helpful - thanks again 🤗

We have a number of clients who use Renaissance Micro Crystalline Wax to achieve a colour enhanced Jesmonite surface; they would normally brush the wax onto the surface and then leave it for 30 minutes before buffing the waxed surface with a white cotton cloth.
