That's a pretty big dealbreaker for many colleges. Even many mid-tier colleges won't admit students with one or more F's on their report card. Don't lose all hope though, because you can go to a local community college for two years and then transfer somewhere very good.

I guess I did deserve it though, didn’t study at all and basically guessed through it all. Luckily middle school grades don’t really matter (and getting that F served as a lesson, I worked harder on the next test I had an got a 91!) , otherwise I can say goodbye to decent education :D

imma try to explain the unweighted GPA (Grade Point Average) because the weighted GPA (with APs and accelerated courses) is different for every school...
      all A’s 4.0
      some B’s but mostly A’s 3.5~3.9
      some A’s but mostly B’s 3.4~3.1
      all B’s 3.0
      some C’s but mostly B’s 2.5~2.9
      some B’s but mostly C’s 2.4~2.1
      all C’s 2.0
I think you see the pattern, hopefully it helped :)
edit: for those who grade systems are in numbers...
      A - 90 to 100
      B - 80 to 90
      C - 70 to 80
      D - 60 to 70
F - 50 to 0 (if you get an F you basically failed the class/test)

    Yale student here:
    1. Lowest grade was a B
    2. Went to a private high school.
    3. High school gpa was around a 4.7 ish
    4. Not a legacy
    5. 1360 SAT, ACT 34
    6. Only took either test once. They were expensive.
    7. No practice tests for the SAT.
    8. Common app essay was about my experience as a multilingual immigrant in elementary-high school, and then STEM.
    9. I only wrote 2 drafts of the essay.
    10. I didn’t work many hours on the essay: I went to my professors for help.
    11. Only 2 people read my essay over.
    12. I had a Yale interview. It was my only interview, I was nervous and was told that perhaps STEM wasn’t for me. He was surprised about my story.
    13. I took many, many APs. Like 14.
    14. I got 3-5s on most of my AP exams.
    15. I didn’t play sports, but I danced.
    16. I did science Olympiad, was in theater, and did some environmental advocacy, and danced/did acrobatics.
    17. I applied to 12 schools. Yale was the only Ivy League I applied to.
    18. I got into all the schools I applied to.
    19. University is hard and diverse in terms of the ways you connect with other people. You get a lot more time with friends.
    20. I call my parents maybe once a day or once every three days.
    21. I sleep 4-7 hours a night.
    22. Yale is the best Ivy League.
    23. Huck Farvard.
    24. Advice to my younger self: be more confident, and go easy on yourself. You’ll be okay.
    25. Tips for getting in: be diligent, do your research, talk to people, create an excel spreadsheet, reach out. Be honest. Be confident. Take risks.
Edit: for those that were wondering, my insta is @adventureswithnataly. Additionally, I majored in Biomedical Engineering with a Spanish Certificate.

natalia alianovna Well there isn’t really a true “minimum” there are averages they take but they’re just that, averages. You don’t have to hit a certain score technically. That being said you’re for sure right that she made up for it in other areas (grades, aps, extra curriculars) because 1390 is on the lower end. I think most people don’t understand how much personality and passion matters in the application (thus your essays because that’s how you get personality and passion across). Also class rank doesn’t play that big of a role. A #1 at a school doesn’t have a better chance than a #14 solely based on rank. (Generally you’ll just find that Val and sals also do a ton of other stuff that help them get in) the ranking itself isn’t that important.

    all A’s 4.0
    some B’s but mostly A’s 3.5~3.9
    some A’s but mostly B’s 3.4~3.1
    all B’s 3.0
    some C’s but mostly B’s 2.5~2.9
    some B’s but mostly C’s 2.4~2.1
    all C’s 2.0
I think you see the pattern, hopefully it helped :)
for those who grade systems are in numbers:
    A - 90 to 100
    B - 80 to 90
    C - 70 to 80
    D - 60 to 70
F - 50 to 0 (if you get an F you basically failed the class/test)

I’m a fourth year medical student interviewing for residency right now. Not sure why this was in my recommended but I feel like I should say something to you younger generation here. I remember being a 16 year old high school student completely obsessed with going to one of these name-brand universities for college. Let me tell you guys something: it doesn’t matter where you go. I ended up not getting into an Ivy League school, but still attended a “top 20” university based on rankings. It did me more harm than good for my pre-med career; the classes were much harder than my state school counterparts and grade deflation caused me to have a low GPA. It took me an extra year+ a lot of effort to build a resume to get accepted to med school.
PS: I have an interview at the Yale health system for my residency program next week. I already know I’m going to be ranking it a lot lower than some regional hospitals that I’d much rather train at. Name and “prestige” isn’t everything :)

@@yayat8429 hey there Yaya! Not gonna lie to you, I have changed my whole outlook of where I want to go to college since AP classes were taking a toll on me. I rarely studied in AP Chem due to family problems and I still some how passed the class! You’ll be just fine (But obviously for A’s, just study and you’ll 100% reach that goal). And as far as the extracurriculars, just do any extracurriculars that are regarded to your major. Going around the school with random extracurriculars isn’t really the best choice, though it is good that you’re participating, stacking in extracurriculars is just messy. Stay with your career! What position you play in softball? I love baseball so that’s cool

I just want to say if any of you are in your senior/junior year of highschool, do NOT waste time feeling guilty about not being the best student. We get tired of saying it maybe but there is nothing truer than "grades and numbers do not define you". It is absolute ludicrous that potentially a few adults who have stressful days, make mistakes, might not be the teacher you need determine whether you get your dreams or not. Education and knowledge are indispensable- keep teaching yourself in every way that you can and you are called to. But please do not compare to these people as if they are the only right way. At the end of it all, you are your actions, thoughts, and feelings. Be sure that it is your voice saying you want the grades, the high scores, the ivy league and not your parents or friends or society. You are smart and capable enough in ways we have not celebrated yet- show us.
Edit: Coming from an Education major who wishes the education system of America would be revised already.

You mean the obvious examples of affirmative action? I've watched countless videos of students who got into Ivies and they either had perfect grades/sat scores/dozens of great ECs or they are black/hispanic and play the "my race changed my world" narrative. If you think any of the people in this video (besides the white guy and the black girl that didn't mention her race in her essays) would have gotten in if they were asian then you are lying to yourself. We should stop making race a factor in college admissions.
