    This has been the bane of my existence for a while now. My vision sucks so much that it's hard for me to pick good frames because I can't see that well without my prescription, so I can't see them well when I'm trying them on. I try to get them to help, but like this last time, they keep giving me styles I don't like, so then I get frustrated all to hell and I go back to trying to blindly pick myself. And then what feels good in the store always has issues after you have worn them for a few days. Pressure points, and my oily nose. Really sucks. Wish I could find someone like you near me. I've tried so many times at so many different places. Just lived to learn with the discomfort and sliding but after 35 years of wearing glasses I'm beyond fed up. Hell I'd pay double if I could just find someone that knew what the hell they were doing. It's all damn high school and college kids trying to fit my 45 year old face. You have no idea how frustrating it is.

    I've been struggling to get the right size frames (and visited 4 different opticians) and I now realize that the glasses I've been wearing for the last 5 years are actually all rather small. The acetate frames I have just perch on the bridge of my nose so I am assuming that they are too small. They also slide down if I wrinkle my nose. The metal frames do the same thing. I also have quite a high nose bridge (in line with just below my eyebrows I think, similar to what yours looks like in the video.) What should I be looking for to take this into account (I am assuming that large round glasses would not be right). I've never had frames, or been given frames to try on, that sit snugly around the nose like the ones you show on your video. Do such frames exist for women? For the next optician I visit, I am hoping we can do an "analysis" together before they open the drawer and ask me to try on about 20 different frames, most of which are the wrong size.

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před 2 lety +1

      The larger trends in glasses make almost everything feel small right now anyway. I give myself a chuckle at some of what I was wearing a few years ago! But in terms of bridge fit, such frames absolutely exist for women, and laibach and york makes some incredible frames in that regard :)

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před 2 lety

      That's going to come down more to properly adjusting the frame after the fact. Few people are symmetrical, the chosen frame needs adjusted to fit properly on that one side that's squeezing. • @ThatGlassesGuy03

      Traditionally diamond can wear anything 🙃. Just mind your overall face structure and cheek bones. The frame should contrast, trim the brown, and flow with your cheek structure. Aviator, clubmaster, hexagon, rectangular square all can work, just contrast the length/width of your face with the frame 😎. Im a little surprised I havent already done a face shape /frame fit video, such a dreadful analogy that leaves many looking for answers in a way that just limits choices unnecessarily 😁

    Excellent and helpful video that I really wish I'd seen earlier. I just picked up new glasses that are too big. I went to a not-cheap shop but did not get any of this kind of sizing advice, and I did not realize I needed it. I didn't realize that even with the big-glasses trend, there are basic size issues you should not ignore. (Like you might want glasses that look kinda big and on-trend but are not actually too big for your face, nose, etc. If that makes sense.) So I have learned an expensive lesson.
    But I'm surprised that the staff simply overlooked these considerations. In the past I have gone to other stores where staff would definitely steer me clear of wrong-sized frames, though they didn't get into details about WHY, like you have. Any ideas as to why this store would just ignore the sizing issue? I suspect it's because they did not have any frames that would fit me and they wanted the sale. The frames I got are very nice, but the wrong size for me.

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před 3 lety

      Totally makes sense, you can go way oversized and still have a proper "fit", many don't even understand how to do this, and some people don't even care about fit in trade for a style with multiple pairs, I still always try to give guidance about the feel of a frame like that and trade offs but as you've seen that's not the case for all shops.
      I would say it varies based on a wide range of factors, but I'm very big on the consultative fit and choice. Some simply care about making the sale, and some still just don't care at all and are happy that you like the look 🤣. People can do strange things, shoot some are just walking around in a fog tired and overworked these days, so I wouldn't be quick to judge from afar 😁 sometimes even a terrible fit can be overcome with some customizations too, so not all hope is lost 🙃

    Just came across your video today and I have a really weird fit and love my current glasses (54-16-135) but need new ones. The sides go out wider but I have really big eyes so I don't mind that since I hate constantly seeing the frame surrounding my eyes. So many of the frames I see have a temple length of 140. Would that make a big difference if the rest of the measurements are the same? Thanks!

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před 3 lety +3

      As I mentioned in this video, you have to be really careful trying to play the numbers game, just like clothes they don't all fit the same even when identical. The last 3 digits of that number you mention are the temple length, and 135 vs 140 is 5mm, but just as above not all mfgs measure this in the same way, some it includes the bend, some its a measure of the temple when fully straightened. All that daid, most people can comfortably wear a 135 or a 140 length easily. Its the 130 and below and the 145 and above where it gets really particular... of course varied around head shape and size, haha. That's the average size I wear by the way 😁 my older blue etnia I dont wear as much these days was exactly that 😁. My current favorite is a thicker rimmed 50-20-145 😎 dont be afraid to venture around in the numbers game is what it comes down to! 💖

      That Glasses Guy weird, in Canada some provinces make it mandatory that all opticians have to have both licences (glasses & contact lenses) , but in some provinces like mine you have the option of doing a 1 year optician course only, or add an extra year for your second contact lens licence! Licensed Contact Lens Fitters have ALL the same fitting privileges as Optometrists/Ophthalmologists! Opticians can also fully "sight-test" in Canada too (ie automated refraction) with just a little bit of extra training! It's kind of crazy because lots of opticians market these sight tests as actual eye exams to the uneducated public 🤔

  • @akahina
    @akahina Před rokem +4

    It's been a decade, but I got some funky tiny lens frames (Traction Productions, Camille). The opticion scoffed at me a bit when I asked to try them saying, "everyone wants to try those and they don't fit anyone". They fit me perfectly, I bought them on the spot and I probably have the only pair in Oregon. I have a theory about sizing.
    The frames have numbers of 33-36. Yes, you read that right. My PD is 69. My eyes perfectly center in the frames. So as a guide I look for frames So I look for frames whose lens and bridge measurements equal my PD. If the sum is less than my PD, my eyes fall to the outside of the lens, not a good look or good for seeing. If the sum is higher I get extended peripheral vision. Do you think I am off base or onto something? It seems to work for me.

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před rokem +1

      For producing lenses those numbers have uses. For sizing and fit of the frame. Nope. You’re a little correct in that if the sun of the numbers is smaller than your PD then yes the fit will be too small in many cases. But the frame could still fit your face with really wide horns. So as is the point of the video, the numbers have very little to nothing to do with how a frame fits on your face 😎. If that bridge were an 18 and the lens a 51, it would still be relatively the same size. In this way it’s kind of fun as you can see how looking for just one specific number is pointless. This is more directly aimed at those that come in saying “I only wear a 16 bridge” or “I can only wear 48 frames” pointless.
      Also wow that is a really odd size!!!! Definitely designed for minimizing thickness of high power lenses, I bet that’s a super cool looking frame!!

If your head is very round in shape, theyre not necessarily too small and could just need adjusted to follow your head shape better (see this a lot in germans and especially hungarian). Otherwise with a more oval shape, yes, definitely too small and you need to get larger. (And for round and oval im not talking face shape, more like what you would use to determine helmet fit) 😁

      Y'know, it comes down to frame design honestly. Temple length as a factor of balance and ergonomics is incredibly important. "Too long" or "Too short" for a face can typically be worked around by a really good fitter and drips in importance. But, if the frame is such that it doesn't adjust easily by design, it moves back to the upper end of importance:) I know that seems wishy washy but hope it makes sense and helps. The options are to manually bend the temples in a way to create the arc so they don't just splay and fold out, or get a frame that uses a slimmer central profile to reduce the impression of the eyes being super close together in oversized frames.

So, I try to find more round, small lenses in high index lens material due to that. I wouldn't wear rounder lenses if they looked awful. It's a trade off for me. The roundish lenses may not be ideal, but they at least may not distort my face as much. I also try not to go with clear or thin frames as it makes the facial distortion more noticeable. @@ThatGlassesGuy03 I actually found that one shortly before you sent it and watched it. Thanks for sharing. This is helpful. I think with me one issue is that my PD is relatively small (61). So, if the lenses are wide and the frame is shaped so that my eyes aren't centered enough, the lenses get thicker toward the edges. So, maybe due to that, it's easy for there to be that not-so-pretty visual distortion for me. I am trying a narrower frame with smaller lenses that are high index with the hope that it might help. I ordered the pair online after doing a home try on... Went one size smaller (from like 132mm total frame width to 126mm). Hopefully they won't be too small lol. If they end up too small, I could have an unfortunate situation where my head is too big for a more narrow than average frame, but my PD is small for someone in that situation and the script makes it so that effect is more prominent with me with most frames (I have probably thought about this way more than I should lol). That would be tough. Its close without trying it on for sure. That wide horn tells me the 52 should be OK for a clear pair. Definitely wouldn't push that small if youre doing sunglasses though.

    Im disappointed about temples, i was hoping for that part to be explained aswell.

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před rokem

      I left it alone because in general temples are made one size today, and are meant to be adjusted to give a proper fit. IF the rest of the frame fits, the majority of the time the temples will be the proper length to be fitted :) OCCASIONALLY you'll have really long heads that the mechanics don't quite work out and the temples are too short, but even in this case a different adjustment can be managed to fix it.
      The takeaway - the frame front needs to fit, the temples are meant to be adjusted to fit.

    • @biba3025
      @biba3025 Před rokem +1

      @@ThatGlassesGuy03 i get that, but I had really bad luck with temples-they hurt my ears, they were too thick and it caused me pain. Most opticians do not pay atention to that but it really matters, esp if u r new to wearing glasses and need proper advice. Lenght and bending also matters. The discomfort behind ears is the worse with glasses.

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před rokem

      Correct, but most all frames are made with one temple size with very little variance. Temple is entirely about proper bending, and when the correct size frame is chosen for the face the temples will need adjusted properly for the face. It’s rather rare to need to shop for a specific temple length and even more rare that you’ll have options, usually 135/140 are the norm (and these two are largely identical and more to do with the temple style). More on the specific topic of temple fit here - czcams.com/video/bfxK1BzARL4/video.html

    Here's a tip. If your optician tells you that you have a small face, high prescription, and need tiny lenses (50mm), and you notice the arms of the frames she sold you start bowing out over time...too small. Then you take a look at the arm measurement when one of them snaps off one day after years of bowing and notice it's 130mm. Rest assured, you were sold kids' glasses. My optician sold me kids' glasses!!!
    I'm sorry that I'm blind, but you're going to have to fit my progressives into larger frames from here on out. I'm tired of bowed arms just because I'm blind.
    Another thing to consider...some people don't have eyes that center. One eye is higher or lower than the other. I have a chiari I malformation...my brain sags on the right...and with it, my right eye. (Eyes are an extension of the brain). My chiari malformation approaches 5mm, so my right eye sits about 5mm lower than my left. Chiari malformations are quite common, btw, and most won't be noted on brain MRIs unless they are obstructing the flow of CSF. So if one eye sits significantly lower than the other, you probably have a chiari I malformation and just don't know about it.

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před 2 lety

      Depends on the optician.. some of us pay a bit more attention and don't only care about lens thickness 😎. However, Generally kids or petite glasses are 125mm or below temple length. Proper fit encompasses more than centration but it's a factor to keep in mind with higher powers, as you mention our eyes are heavily reliant on our brains, and as such decentration affects the image coming in in a variety of ways 🙂.
      There is also a way to properly bow and fit glasses, so that's another story 😝.
      In regards to this last but, most people are asymmetric. Some more than others. Generally one eye is around 1-2mm further out/in and most anywhere from 0.5-1.5 high/low. In more extreme cases like yours finding a balance of fit AND adjusting the lens designs for it is absolutely key, including considering cosmetic prism to balance image height 🙃.
      Good stuff, but some wrong concepts. Stick around awhile, we'll get you better than most of your opticians to date it sounds like 😎
