The Savannah Biome - Biomes #2

  • The Savannah (Savanna) is the vast open country of the tropics composed of a patchwork of trees and shrubs on a bed of grass. It is a result of the tropical wet and dry seasons that cycle through the tropics year after year - the Tropical Savannah Climate.
In this video on biogeography we take a close look at the Savannah Biome. What is the Savannah? What makes it that way? And what countries have the Savannah?
The Savannah Biome dominates the continent of Africa at the centre of our world but is also found in Brazil, Australia, India and the Caribbean. 🌎🌍🌏
Of all the world’s habitats, this one supports the earth’s most famous fauna and wildlife. This is the home of the safari of the Masai Mara of Kenya, the Serengeti of Tanzania and the Kruger National Park of South Africa. 🐗🦘🦒🐘🦛🦏🦓🐆

@@Geodiode People like it that much? That's good. With everything going on in Africa (politics, neo eastern colonialism through financial power, and systemic instability etc)Costa Rica has become both our short term goal for the next 3-5 years and a real possibility that we might not be able to go to Kenya. I hesitate to make a 20 year investment if everyone I know is leaving a place due to it getting bad/rough.
I think the only negative thing I've heard about Costa Rica is that Americans miss the convenience or busy factor of North America and go back for what's more comfortable. For us wanting to have an off grid eco village though and have a large permaculture garden property it's not too big of a deal. Also, lot more likely to get tourists in Costa Rica than in a village in remote Kenya... I know Mombasa is popular in Kenya though. land is shockingly expensive and hard to acquire in Kenya... like more expensive than the US (and good luck finding more than like 2 acres)

@@Geodiode Yeah, I think Kenya is closer to our heart since my wife is from there and I love it. Costa Rica is closer to Texas and beautiful also though, time will decide.. and circumstance!
No worries on the late comment, and also yes... the Chinese neocolonialism situation in Africa right now is very alarming, there is a channel my wife watches called Wake Up Africa I think - dr Mumai Seraki
I really really really really look forward to your videos on microclimates of top environmental tourism and weather countries such as Uganda, Kenya, Costa Rica etc etc ... I'm sure if they are as well researched, formatted , and presented as all of your other videos they will be equally eye opening and inspiring!

The large mammals of other regions (of which there used to be a number of species) are gone now unfortunately, it's basically just the African ones that remain. Mammoths, sabre tooth tigers, giant sloths, among others are all gone. One of my favorite biomes is the mammoth steppe, which is what used to cover much of today's boreal forests of the northern regions during the previous glacial periods. It supported much more life back in the day according to some estimates in comparable amounts to today's tropical savannahs, though that seems strange so far north to me. Interesting to see some projects attempting to restore parts of it with large animals still remaining.

@@Geodiode yes, but not so close, i liked your explanation,i meant the difference of the cerrado biome in MS (state), in the koppen classification a huge part of brazil is like tropical savannah but in fact the climates of these places are really different having somewhat similar biomes, as for example in the capital of brazil there is the cerrado biome but its formations and climate is very different from that of MS for example the climate of campo grande MS and the south of MS is subtropical (cfa), I noticed that some of the climates indicated on the map of Brazil in koppen are wrong, for example as I said the Campo climate MS climate is the cfa but on the map it is aw, but I think it is because of the biome that it generalizes as aw, but it is not. -and in the south of Brazil there is actually a temperate climate, with well-defined seasons (winter, summer, autumn, spring). -a curiosity: the only places in Brazil that are really cold and have a mild climate are in the south of Brazil, which snows every year, and in Campo grande MS and also in the south of the same state, these having frost and climate mild, humid climate.

Sort of, but as I mention in the video, Savannah is a mix of trees and grasses, although some like the Serengeti are 95% grass.

I think your map is a bit off it shows Savannah in Europe which I've never seen but it's missing in India, Argentina, and south Texas
Terai-Duar savanna and grasslands, Iberá Wetlands, and Western Gulf coastal grasslands. Southern Europe, Middle East and North Africa is Mediterranean savannah

@@Geodiode A vast area of India is definitely savannah; you can see it in plenty of more detailed biome maps online. Sometimes it's called tropical grassland but that's interchangeable with savannah from the looks of it, as plain "grassland" is used for areas that can't support significant trees, which is not the case here.
Having lived in both the subcontinent and Africa, I can attest that the subtropical savannah looks very similar.

I think you mean Savanna, not Savannah. Savanna is the biome you were talking about, Savannah is a city in the state of Georgia.

Llamas don't spawn nor do they live in Savanahs. A Llama is born through sexual reproduction between a male and female llama. I'm sure you can fill in the blanks.
