The New York City Subway in Manhattan

- This film shows some impressions of the New York City subway in Manhattan.
The NYC subway system is really old and the infrastructure shows a lot of wear and tear; especially the stations are in pretty rough shape. The system is quite efficient, though. Many lines have four tracks, where the inner two tracks are used by express services, which only stop at major (interchange) stations. The platform layout at these stations allows for convenient transfer between express and local services.
This film was shot on a Saturday afternoon. Curiously, there seemed to be significantly less frequent service than during weekdays, with some lines even not operating at all. Some stations were quite deserted while others (especially those along the Lexington Avenue line) were overcrowded.
Enjoy!
Index to the film:
00:00 - 47-50 Streets / Rockefeller Center
01:20 - West 4th Street / Washington Square
02:23 - Spring Street (note the express service passing the station at 4:05)
04:26 - Canal Street
05:31 - Riding an R160 class train on the E line from Canal Street to World Trade Center
07:04 - World Trade Center station
07:33 - A brief view of the 9/11 memorial and the new 1 World Trade Center building
08:17 - Fulton Street (platform for J and Z lines; quite deserted this day)
08:38 - Brooklyn Bridge / City Hall
10:34 - Grand Central / 42nd Street
11:15 - 68th Street / Hunter College
I used to have a LOT of subway dreams as a kid, and when I visited NYC as a teenager I was floored that the subways in my dreams looked like the ones in NYC despite me never being there before.
The subways were one of my favorite parts of my trip to New York for so many reasons
ilove it and good look in nyc
I like montreal metro
Odd, perhaps you are a reincarnation? Or maybe just a really odd coincidence, either way cool!
Come to Moscow and see how great a metro can be :-)
Same dude 😎
At 5:14 I love the sound of the train moving :) does anyone else love the sound too?
Duh I love the sound
Hell yeah, man.

Bro, it gives me goosebumps..
Listen to all of the people in the comments, from a NY Brooklyn kid growing up. This was my childhood. I loved it when ever I stepped in into the city and subway. Loved it. Sadly i live in Jersey but it's nice out here. Still I miss the city.
A wave of nostalgia really hit me. I've lived in New York all my life and moved to Florida two years ago, and never expected to miss the subways. Appreciate even the things you hate most in life, you might really miss them one day. :,(
In a week, I'm heading to NYC for the first time. These videos are great for getting a sense of the flow and atmosphere of using subways.
Wolf Godwin how was your trip?
So, how was your trip to NYC? I was born there 😏
SDseb me too
Wolf Godwin how was it im living in nyc
how was it like
Just watching this video I miss my hometown such much. Nice job you captured the heartbeat of NYC. The greatest city in the world.

Yea, it's that smell of democracy, man. Full of life, including wild life.
New York City is one of the places that I would really love to visit. Definitely on my bucket list of places to see.
It is one of my dreams to visit this wonderful City one day. Greetings from Europe
+raps maradona I agree. :)
If you ever visit the best station is Falton st
+raps maradona Its my dream to live in Manhattan, one day. Living in Upstate New York, we don't have the luxury of the subway system, or tons of options for public transit.
I've been in NYC all my life, ever since I was born 13 years ago, and my wish is to visit London or Japan one day.
I live in New York. It's horrible, the MTA is the worst train system I've ever had the misfortune of riding. My dream is to live in London where everything is cleaner and works better.
Living in Canada I found out that some of the trains date from the 1960s! Wow!
They’re slowly being phased out though, some of the lines that used to have nothing but old models running on them are nearly complete of newer models, someone correct me if I’m wrong but from what I’ve seen the B and D lines are the only ones I see nowadays using nothing but older models running on their lines
sometimes NYC is a mess, but its my mess and i love it no matter what
couldn't have said it better at all...

So true

nyc will always be my home even tho trump is gana do shit

It ain’t pretty, but you can’t deny the nyc subway will get you home at 3 am while you are drunk from a night of partying.
Nyc Subway are open for 24 hrs ????
@@a.r.6207 Yea but due to the pandemic it closes at 1 am to 5:00 am
@@thenyctrailfaner great lov nyc, I am form Delhi ( India) here morng 5am to 11pm. But Newyork is newyork nothing beat it.
i find it pretty in a weird industrial way.
@@thenyctrailfaner in Moscow the metro is open from 5 30 am to 1 am in the night window cleaning of the metro station is carried out as well as repair and maintenance work after the closure of the metro at night trains go to the depot or at night placement that is some trains spend the night at metro stations or in the tunnel this is called hot reserve that the first passengers could get on the first train at night also carry out repair work for this remove the high voltage from the contact rail 825 volts that the repairmen could enter safely into the tunnel all repair services work quickly efficiently and quickly so that at 5 30 in the morning the metro opens again and begins to transport passengers
I miss all of it, even the dirty subway station, just everything
Take The Route even the delays? It's getting worse and worse by years
Xmas zohatvp
Laura Del Mundo Even potentially catching a disease down there???
Joe Martin lmao, this reply aged well💀
Lmao
The subway is a mess, but it's a beautiful one. It's disorganization and outdated infrastructure gives it a cozy feel I find
This metro is a garbage
@@yeinsonsalazar7840 Ya the NYC subway sucks. poorly maintained (*cough cough* Chambers St and Bowery), lots of delays, etc. Come down to Boston for a REAL subway 😉
Mark Murphy Your kidding right???
Boston subway is shit, it has like only 4 lines
@@yeinsonsalazar7840 how?
Saturday afternoons are a relatively low-volume passenger time on the NYC subway system. Certain stations that always seem busy on weekdays sometimes are busy on Saturdays too, but that's not the usual case. The Lexington line is very busy, because its companion, the long-awaited 2nd Avenue subway, is not yet open for service.
As for the stations, yes they are old but the transport authority that operates the system has made some remarkable progress in cleaning up the old stations, repainting them, and doing general "fix-ups" to make them more palatable. Considering that the system carries 6 million riders a day, all in all the modern trains, along with the stations being modernized are providing a much better environment than in years past. Nonetheless, the waits for trains can sometimes be too long, and the trains are often overcrowded.
+George W. Blomme So weekend service on the subway system is low-volume time.
It's been ten years since I've been in NYC and now I need to write something about this. Thank you for making this video available to bring those memories back, it really helps.
this subway line may not be the most comfortable or modern but it gets the job done. the trains are ment to last and work hard not be luxurious super trains, and they do their job very well.
Are you joking, the NYC subway is the most delayed system in the entire planet. The governor even announced a state of emergency and called this the summer of hell.
It may as well be year round for the subway. The system shut down 3 times over the summer for many hours. Constant construction and delays........it's absolutely awful. I'm not sure how even railfans can like the NYC subway...
@@WillLMC96 Delays are no more in the NYC subway this year. The causes of delays if of stupid people who causes fights on trains an the driver has to call the police for this type of shit. Always fights. Another way delays happen is by Train track error or Signals. Also if someone has an emergency but it rare to see that. Other subways are trash since the train fleets look so ugly and our subways look more common sense with the best people saying the announcements. Plus the door sounds are beautiful then any other crap subway.
Yeah, the old fleet cars are still maintained properly. About a week ago, an old Fleet car retired which was named the R42. This subway car had been operating for 50 years. It was well maintained but it was time to retire since new subway cars replaced them. R179
@@nyctransitrailfan Bro wtf, I can tell you having been on both New York has nothing on the London Underground. London had countdown clocks in the early 1990s at every station + articulated trains since 2010. NYC is way behind that's the problem......it is not modern enough compared to other systems around the world. However I will say the delays have improved over 2 years and it is one of the better systems in North America (Chicago, Washington DC, Philadelphia, L.A. etc all suck) but would never make the top 10 on an International scale.
My wife and I visited Manhattan in 2019, staying on West 47th. We used the subway a LOT in that week. OK, you maybe couldn't eat your dinner off the platforms, but we thought the stations we used were pretty OK, and certainly no worse than their counterparts in London. The trains were the real shocker, though - clean and almost 100% litter-free! Here in Scotland we have a subway in Glasgow - it's a lot smaller, but is invariably dirty and strewn with litter. NYC, 10/10. Glasgow, 2/10.
No offense, Glasgow.
It looks nice but I prefer the underground for its seats and the trains but to be fair I have never been to NY so hopefully I will ride the subway one day
Really excellent videos! The joy of subways. If you haven't experienced, try it. It's the soul of new york city.

Love NYC. Didn't need a car when I traveled there, I left my car in the hotel parking lot my whole trip. 😂
Really wonderful! Even shows what it's like to drive on a subway.
It's nice

5:13, The sound of the subway leaving the station just sounds super nice and smooth
Good to see and hear, its amost like being there.
This is a nice video. Reminds me when things were normal/functioning. I hope we can return to that. The World Trade Center memorial is also beautiful.
I love the grimey stations as much as I love the really nice ones!
Agreed!
ilove it in nyc
What I like about this video is that the creator hasn't dubbed in music, thus allowing the natural sounds of the Subway to entertain enthusiasts; music added to CZcams videos ruins them.
I LOVE THAT NEW YORK CITY TRAIN!!!!!

I like all video of the subway thanks
Those who say the subway is dirty and a mess never rode it during the 1970’s and 80’s. It was an absolute disaster back then.
Davvero un bellissimo lavoro, sono un grande appassionato della metropolitana di New York, un saluto dalla lontana Palermo.

Love the stainless steel covering all those train cars, especially the ribbed stainless steel on the older cars.
The subway train sounds bring me back to when I was living in the Bronx until I was 8 and I always took the train to Manhattan with my mom
I find this video so relaxing
I'm looking forward to seeing Manhattan again and riding some of these trains for the first time
my city!!...cant wait to g back in 4 months right after I finish my last highschool year
Not a bad video to fall asleep too....
I lived in NYC around 75 years ago and remember the trains were so black and dreary with a lot more noise BUT I was not afraid to travel ALONE on the trains (always the first car). Those trains look very nice and shiny and still make me homesick for riding one again.
Must've been nice back then though :D
888 Gaming so your 75 right.........
At $2.75 a ride, no matter how far you travel, the subway is an unbelievable bargain. There is no cheaper or faster way to get around Manhattan. Taxis cost a fortune and road traffic in Manhattan can be a nightmare.
5:14 that sound creep me out when I was 3 I was so scared but now I'm 11 I'm not scared anymore

idk why but this is some real soothing white noise
the fact that their subway is actually better than their national railway
I wish Detroit had a subway system, but we have a people mover that only circulates through downtown and a Q-Line that goes from downtown Detroit to downtown Pontiac, which is cool, but I just want it to expand though, and I love New York, from the food stances, skyscrapers, boroughs, and the subway system, next time I come back, I'm going through all the boroughs.
This guy deserves 1m subs or more :D Just subed
Finally someone who gets what video im looking for
The inside doesn't look pretty but they get to the point. Fit as many people as you can and move to the next stop quickly. I love it. The system is so interesting. Here in Perth Australia our trains are "fancy" as some may say. I like the rustic sufficient design of the NYC subway system
All the underground subway stations are in need of a total over haul and remodel
I'm a train or tram (Can't make up my mind) and I approve this video!!!

I like to see some videos post of the operation of subway vehicles and the repair/mechanic side of these vehicles... To determine how similar to regular trains there operation /procedures are as well as what type of brakes , engines ,...etc they have
THIS IS AWSOME
Ahh, the good old NYC days.
Great Work, thanks!

I love this video and I love the subway train noises

The NYC subway stations and trains are dirty yet beautiful at the same time. But serious question. Why doesn't the city or who ever is in charge of the subway system clean it up or even replace the out dated trains? I don't get it. The subway system in Moscow Russia is two times bigger and their stations are beautiful works of art.
HotLikeFire92
One word.
Money.
They’re underfunded I believe, they need money to run the subway and they’re not getting it.
Correct me if I’m wrong.
The sheer size and # of stations is to blame. More stations + more rail = more money needed.
The SOS DuD Wow isn't America the richest country in the world, wait hold on that's right corporate America doesn't ride the subway.
I heard that theyre going to replace all remaining r32, r44 and r46 with brand new r211 in 2020-2023 i think
At 3:45 I love the train sound.❤

Even though 24fps is the standard for a movie like film, this 25fps here looks exactly the same! Only 1 frame more does nothing.
7:23 dang lol 🚂 🔥 💨
I know this might be weird..all i need is a bed to stimulate being in the train while listening to this sound and it will put me right to sleep 😴😴. I'm always falling asleep on the train. LMAO.

Excellent quality video as always
I haven't been on the NYC subway since March and I miss it.
There's no doubt that jf money was spent on the NYC subway it would be one of the best in the world. Even so it's still better than the Paris Metro!
Agree. I’d still say it’s pretty great considering the size, history and pre-COVID ridership of almost 6 million, but I agree that if politicians would start funding the MTa better it would be so much better
I ❤ New York
You still have plastic seats on your trains?
if they did that here in London there'd be hell to pay
CPW Local Heard of Aluminum?
DANIEL WOODHOUSE Do you want to constantly maintain the seats of the subway train after each Run?
Cushioned seats hold bed bugs
@mattgilmeister i love it too. In in Perú now and i miss the sound.
Who else remembers being jammed into the train carts like a pack of sardines during rush hour. Looking at this video really made me feel like I'm there probably because I've been to the ny subway numerous times as a kid. This is nuts.
Our Moscow metro is more beautiful. Each station is a work of art.
This New York subway is worlds second subway, yes!
I didn’t know there could be a r142a 6 train
Great video!
That eerie sound when the train comes.. eeeekkkkk....creeeek...

good job and ilove nyc subway tran
Hi. At 1:27 there is a picture of the station. Am I seeing it right that the A, C & E trains are on that level and the B, D, F & M trains are on a lower level? So the subway lines are stacked on top of each other?
The NYC Subway seems really complicated and confusing compared to the Chicago L...
Cristian Martinez it's not complicated
Well, It's Complicated When You Ride It For The First Time, you'll get use to it tho,
Not a patch on the London Underground or Glasgow Subway "Clockwork Orange".
Lovely
Thank you very much and god blessing you and you family
OK good but I think I will be all that is the best way to get the best of luck with your family and friends

I wish people would stop criticizing the NYC Subway sure we have delays sure we have lots of construction but it’s still NYC transit what us New Yorkers know and love I don’t think the trains we have now need to be replaced there all fine and we are getting new cars in a few years anyways there called R211 search them up
what does the man say at 05:31 ???
thanks!

as an english tourist i used the E line to get me back to JFK. was really impressed (yes i’m a train geek)
If announcements for the Singapore MRT system is used for the NYC Subway, “The 1 train approaching Platform A will end in service at 242nd Street.” & “The 1 train approaching Platform B will end in service at South Ferry.”
oh do they also play classical music there? :). They also do here in leipzig at the train station
When was this filmed?? I just went to New York December 2016....looks nothing like what I saw....
Homer Balderas because not every station is the same this person only showed you the clean stations on nyc of you go to the stations uptown manhattan they are so sorry and old.
