Testing Overtone's Bleach-Free Dye Made For Brown Hair

  • Overtone, a hair-dye company known for its pigmented, semi-permanent conditioner dyes, recently changed the game by releasing a new line of hair dye specifically formulated for brunettes. The hair dye requires no bleach and no lighteners to achieve color, which is usually what holds brunettes back from dyeing their hair, as these chemicals can cause damage when used frequently or incorrectly. Producer Nico Reyes, who has never before dyed her curly brown hair, tests the new Overtone formula out for herself to see if it's actually effective in coloring her dark a brighter red shade.

I've discovered that when products claim they've made something for "brown hair", what they really mean is, "level 7, a.k.a. dark blonde." Anything darker than that, the dye will make your hair look black or near black, with a very faint sheen of the color you want that's only visible in sunlight. At least this one showed some realistic results.

This product is interesting, especially for an Asian like me, who has dark hair and love to dye it. But I’m wondering what’s the difference between this and Manic Panic then? If in the end, without bleach, all you can see is a tinge of colour. I’ve tried Manic Panic’s pink dye without bleaching and the result is just like that. A tinge of colour that can only be seen when I’m under the sun. Especially since they specifically marketed it as hair dye for brown hair or something like that.

It doesnt work for brown hair. Nothing is gonna work on darker brown or darker hair. You need to bleach, and bleaching doesnt damage your hair much if you do it correctly. This genuinely worked OK, not great but it's OK, the ingredients are very great for the lower price but it doesnt last very long. Punky hair color works WAY better, and has OK ingredients but more worth it for the price.
EDIT: considering you said you have asian hair i would reccomend bleaching your hair with clairol bleach from sallys with 30 developer mixed with 20 developer, to make a 25, and then use punky hair shampoo/conditioner hair depositer instead.

@@saharaamazinglady Yeah, I've bleached my hair numerous times since I started dyeing it in 2013 and my hair's condition is pretty good. I don't love the process of bleaching it but it worked well. I was initially interested in this product because it's marketed towards brown hair. So I thought the result would be different than other semi-permanent hair colour like Manic Panic. Of course I knew it won't be as bright as if the hair were to be bleached, but I expected that it would show up more than it did in the video.

I’ve used overtone for over a year and I love it. My best advice is to leave the conditioner on a LOT longer than recommended. I leave it on for upwards of 2 hours. There’s no actual dye in it, so it won’t harm your hair to leave it in that long. Also, the color for brown hair line really pops in the sunlight.

@@janninmarie8385 it's a color depositing conditioner that doesn't necessarily bond with your hair follicles like box dye does. Box dye actually goes through a chemical reaction to bond with the hair follicles so the color lasts longer.

After all, everything can clog your pores and make you break out. Even if it's a product marketed as non pore clogging. My message just is, that it doesn't has a high chance of breaking you out, as suggested in the video, but is rather something most people can easily tolerate on skin. There are far worse things in a lot of moisturizers like alcohol of fragrance/essential oils that can break you out.

    A. Does the dye stain your shower?
    B. Do you have to shower with cold water to make the dye stay in your hair?
    C. Does it rub out and stain your pillowcases and backs of your shirts?
    D. Will the dye come out if I straighten or curl my hair with an iron?
I'm asking these things based on awful previous experiences

    • @roadworkahead2456

      A. As long as you wash away (run water on it until it's gone) the product within 10 minutes it will not stain. You have to be diligent about that.
      B. No but it does indeed help significantly.
      C. As long as your hair is not wet, it will not.
      D. Not typically, use a lower temp just in case. (I've never had this problem with overtone).
When applying leave in DRY hair for longer then recommend time (I do an hour). When washing out the product do not use shampoo or conditioner the first time.
NEVER GO TO BED WITH WET HAIR PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DONT.
I absolutely love overtone and have used rose gold for brown hair, extreme blue, ginger, ginger again ( really good color for blondes), and red for brown hair (used this on ginger hair and it made my hair a beautiful red/ginger). Now I'm going to used extreme or vibrant Red.

It has lightener in it so it lifts the hair and deposits color in one process rather than two. I use it on my roots every 4-6 weeks (since I’ve been red for a very long time, but if you try this you’d need to apply it all over *the first time*) and do the Overtone deep conditioning red for dark hair every other week or so. I’m not very impressed with the color deposit. As I Am only lasts one wash but color is bolder.

@M M I really don't think it will break you out. It's non-comedogenic. If you break out from it, it's probably something else

    • @jvan9581
      @jvan9581 Před 4 lety

@M M maybe it's the brand (they put some fragrance or etc in it) or some dirt from your hands got in it. Also, maybe an allergic reaction? Though, you should try talking to your dermatologist about it if you're really curious about it

Derzie your hair can’t lift unless there’s lightener involved so Ofcourse there has to be lightener in it but you can just skip the whole bleaching process and just put this in your hair for a lot less damage and a pretty good color payoff.

Don’t use overtone. I used brown on my light brown hair and it ruined the color of my hair. Some of the colors don’t come out all the way. It turned my hair a green tint then a yellow ish tint and never came out all the way.
