No pressure Alana, just some thousand strangers who want to know if you broke a guy's heart.
+Alfredo Marquez No heartbreaking here! (this is Ry's sister) ;)
+Alee Noland hiii I was just transcribing this episode on nerdfighteria.info and I just wanted to clarify the spelling of the names, is it Ry Prindle and Alana Rose Purdy? Thanks :D
+nicoleeverleighhhx Ry Prindle and Alannah Rose Purdie :) Thank you!
+Alee Noland no, thank YOU! and congratulations to your (and her) family! :D
+nicoleeverleighhhx Thank you! I will pass on the well wishes!
Brings a whole new meaning to "computer virus".
Boom boom bop
ba dum tss
+Kamiflage fwa doom tish
LETS PRINT EBOLA
What could go wrong?
Yay while we at it lets put it in cookies and give it to there caffateria ladies to be extra safe. And everything will be fine fool proof righ lol.
Proposing on SciShow? Someone didn't forget to be awesome.
A thank you
+Ry Prindle The big question on my mind is. Did she say yes?
She couldn't say yes. So she nodded yes. When she could talk, then she said yes. Her sister recorded it and her mom and niece were there watching it with us. They and my sister, were the only people in on it, other than the amazingly awesome people creating Sci Show. Thanks again Team SciShow!
Ry Prindle Congratulations to the both of you then! I wish you a very happy life together
Ry Prindle you're welcome
I don't know why, but Hank's description of the future of Artificial Life really reminded me of Zerg Swarm from Starcraft. Millions of artificially created creatures with a precisely picked genome which are designed to do various tasks with incredible efficiency. Except the designer isn't Abathur, but scientists, real people.
The thought that the Zerg are a lot closer to reality is kinda scary, but also, kinda cool :D
+Jake Long There's another important part of being Zerg. The Hive Mind. They all have at least a little intelligence, but they form a wireless, long range, hierarchic mental structure, and thus are the swarm, and not just a flood of various different organisms.
+Jake Long Need more overlords.
+Jake Long Connection established, you improved.
Man...
Hope she doesn't say "No". This episode will be a terrible constant reminder of that as he slips further and further into alcoholism and depression, watching it over and over again.
But I bet she said "Yes".
+Sketchy Fella Wait, did I miss something here? What's this about saying yes?
+commode7x the part you usually skip where he talks about their sponsors/"presidents of space"
+commode7x 4:26
+commode7x Finish the episode. You'll get it.
+commode7x this episodes "president of space" posed a quiestion to his significant other.
Time to download my girlfriend.
+Combinacijusx Sooo... basically I still have a chance. Now it's a matter of preserving my brain intact for a 1000 years... Hope they make some progress with that.
On the other hand, it's more likely for me (and bunch of other lonely guys) to have a lot less complex robotic girlfriend sooner. One who you could possibly understand, because her brain would be based on set of quite complex, but understandable instructions.
That thought alone makes me feel better.
+Rafał Zbojak well assuming human artificial intelligence on computers makes its way in a few years and with virtual-reality you wouldn't need robot at all, just a VR headset and a program
CPLCraft Yeah, but it would be better to be able to cuddle with someone. Even if it's covered with a metallic or composite shell. Until we could simulate this sensation, I'll stay with my robot idea. XD
Just download a portable vagina, you won't have to deal with the artificial nagging.
+Rafał Zbojak I already have a robotic girlfriend. It's my phone.
You wouldn't download a turtle.
+DanSlab ..... or would you?
+DanSlab You wouldn't download Legionella.
Turtles would be to complex and how do you activate the brain?
+Peyton With the power of Zeus himself... LIGHTNING!
+DanSlab I would download a Turtle
When can I download bread?
+Buttered Toast
the moment you have the cartridges filled with bread, so that you can start to print bread from.
Before you can teleport it.
+Frank Schneider actually you would only need the basic elements, so it will cost about as much as a loaf of bread, MWUHAHAHA, what did I say? Sorry..., good.
ender_scythe
Think about it again, and you'll come to recognize, that this will not work. A 3D printer is no wonder machine that can magically make away all production processes. It's just a universal machine for arranging substrates in a new way and not a replicator.
Yes i know, your comment was just funny :-) but I find it pretty disturbing that most people seem to not really understand even such a simple technology and the limits and economics of its application.
+Frank Schneider THAT'S WHAT I SAID, stop yelling! NO! GAH!
Being that they downloaded the DNA from the internet, I'm genuinely surprised the genome wasn't coded to RickRoll the scientists.
If I knew the experiment was happening I would have done everything I could have to make that happen.best.troll.ever (if it did happen)
This was 6 years ago and he predicted the future
This is my first attempt at a video transcription and I TOTALLY DIDN'T NOTICE UNTIL I WAS TYPING IT THAT IT WAS A PROPOSAL AT THE END. what a transcription.
Okay, now that it's officially official (she's seen the video)- SHE SAID YES!!!
(-Ry's sister)
Alee Noland Yay! Congrats!!
Wait... fuck! This is what I'm doing my master's thesis on! THEY CAN'T DO MY WORK BEFORE I DO IT
+Darasilverdragon Yoink! You better kick it into high gear then and publish something before they do.
+Darasilverdragon Synthesize the genome of _Ostreococcus tauri_. That would be impressive!
+Darasilverdragon You need radioactivity and spiders.
+rangedfighter See Edmund McMillen for details
How'd it go?
It sounds like this technology would eventually allow the creation of human beings with whatever genetic sequence the person in the lab desired. Or perhaps, create the successor to the human race.
+Eugene Khutoryansky And so was Cell created!
+Eugene Khutoryansky The ability for this to go beyond just cells is going to take decades, if not centuries. Cells are way easier to make than complex biological structures. And we can't even make the way more basic structures that make up a cell yet.
+Luapix Kinda hard to expect ethics to stop anything when billions of people have access to the tech and it's more weird than obviously wrong.
+Eugene Khutoryansky That's too hard. It's easier to tinker with already existing genomes and modify your "child". That's called eugenics.
+Eugene Khutoryansky humans 2.0
yay soon we are gonaa get cheat codes irl
+Luka lomidze You mean eugenics? That's already a thing... although it is not practiced.
lol
It's gonna be a while
I hope they comment on this with her response! So adorable!
One step closer to 3D printed cat girls.
Shut the hell up.
+MakoRuu I prefer Lamias but Cat Girls are nice too..
M'eh
+MakoRuu You mean dumb creatures that are only interested in themselves, spend a lot of time preening and only pay attention to you when they want something ? We already have those. Give me a dog girl. Fun. Loyal. Able to form a genuine 2-way emotional bond.
Either or is fine, really.
Dang. The president of space's proposal gave me goosebumps!
Is it bad that I'm watching this instead of doing my homework?
+minimooster I'm doing it too, I'll probably fail one of my classes but oh well.
+minimooster
Nada.
+minimooster Not really. This is still pretty educational.
you learned more watching the video.
+minimooster Unless your homework is solving the oldest mysterious of humanity and ferreting out the secrets of the Universe, this video is a pretty good alternative.
This sounds like an incredible breakthrough. I was unaware this level of biogenetics had been achieved.
Years ago John Green was called upon to ask a Nerdfighter if she would marry another Nerdfighter (she said yes and last I heard, they were happily married). Now it is Hank's turn to be the proposal proxy!
SAY YES
Creating artificial life?
I bet you in less than 300 years some guy will have a full army of supersoldiers created by himself
+ZomBae Try like 50 years.
BIkaloss Seems about right
+ZomBae An army of one guy? I've seen this movie;
Who is the original?
*Well, I'm the original!*
(ten minutes later)
They're all dead, guys! We won! They killed each other for some reason!
+ZomBae Still needs lots of resources though
+MuslimGoku "could the real Baal please stand up? please stand up?"
Thanks scishow for adding the resources.
It really helps to not just get an overview, espicially for people who are interested in the subject.
Myth: scientists are trying to play god.
Fact: scientists have long since surpassed the power you ascribe to your gods!
not really since on their viewpoint god created the universe so for scientist has surpassed god they we need to create a universe of their own
+Kaito Kuroba It's just a few years away from happening. Give it time.
+Kaito Kuroba Rick made a microverse to fuel his car battery, are you trying to tell me the things I see on TV aren't real??
+commode7x I'm allergic to patience
+RE S No, but is it a UNIverse? I think not
So in the far distant future we could have dragons living by our side.
did she say yes?
Yep
I do hope they follow up on the couple! Very cute!
it's amazing how scishow lines up with my classes sometimes.. I literally just learned everything he said in my genetics lecture three hours ago..
oh we are going to have to have a follow up on this proposal!!
Will that jet fuel be able to melt dank memes?
In 1990s we heard about computer viruses.
But now we hear computer life.
Amazing!
aww! the end was lovely!
Well, time to print my dinosaur!
Wait folks... This was 5 years ago. What happened since then? Five years in this super fast growing world is a lot.
My mind is blown, thank you Hank
u guys are awesome! we are getting there...but still got much to discover and learn in science.
Say YES Alanna!
Humanity has become masters of life. This excites me.
+Jordan Shank More like masters of the simplest possible organisms. But genemodding could be only a few decades away.
+LRpaul145 gene modding is here right now.. It's just tricky.
Just within our lifetimes we've seen concepts being born in the clumsy and inefficient stage, then to explode in complexity and application the moment it becomes optimized properly. Example: your phone was probably unheard of in 2011. Coke bottles are now more sophisticated than brain surgery was in the 50's.
If you master the small you can master everything. I'll just predict this right now: we'll see the first synthetic organism with a function before the end of next year, and the first synthetic multicellular organism before 2020.
+RedTriangle53
You are as likely to be right as the prediction of the first commercial fusion reactor in 1973 (no, H-bombs do NOT count). You MASSIVELY underestimate the complexity of a single cell and massively overestimate our existing knowledge about it.
Frank Schneider Anecdotes.
I have one too. Isaac Asimov predicted voice recognition in the 1950's. He predicted it to be a new technology thousands of years into the future. Yet here we are.
RedTriangle53 That's true. Just this year, Facebook facial tracking has become more accurate at recognizing faces than trained humans can.
science is amazing. can't wait to hear more advanced research on this topic
something is so satisfying about this video being exactly 5 : 00 long
I'm calling it: Pokémon are becoming a real thing.
If she said "no" I'm unsubscribing. JK, but that's ballsy, of Hank and the new (hopefully engaged) President of Space.
+Ian Martin Haha, well don't hit that unsub button, because she said yes! ;)
+Alee Noland NICE! Drinks all around!
Wht happened
Awesome stuff.
my mind hasn't been this blown since... forever.
Goddammit, I can't get away from love and marriage proposals and romance and all that shit. This is a science video! I don't need to be reminded that I'm alone!
Sorry
Propose to me via SciShow.
The ending was so sweet!
Good report!
Bacteria can't melt steel beams
+BlakeMcTavishe but they can eat it.
Microbial corrosion.
Soon we'll be able to 3D print our own pets.
And slaves. Because obviously, people will want to use it for making life easier for themselves.
+TheRexDark Ofcourse we'll be able too! but most likely there'll be laws prohibiting it so don't get your hopes up. :c (sidenote, what if we engineer a species that thrives by helping people and working really hard without pay, would it be immoral then?)
Program your pet to clean the dishes, do the laundry, clean the house, etc.
I love this channel
omg this is the coolest thing, so many scifi ideas
so in 50 years if my dog dies i could use its hair and print my dog?
Jeremy Chung you could in theory make a clone of your dog today if you wanted.
"Five, if you count the scientists being human" LOL!! XD hank you make me laugh so much
one step closer to Scotty beaming me up!
And cutest proposal ever
I swear if this idea grows enough my grandkids are going to email themselves to me to visit
Wow, that is awesome.
awwwe, that finishing note was cute.
I hit the like button, cause it's SciShow, but, this subject frightens me!
You're all thinking to small (or rather too big)
If we can program cells to do what we want, we can get them to make things like artificial antibodies, graphine, carbon nano tubes, etc.
This is a tool you could use to invent the cure for aids/cancer (most contagious diseases, really), super capacitors, space elevators, cheap desalination, etc etc.
It's immensely complicated, so I don't see those innovations happening tomorrow, but that is the kind of potential this technology has. It's kinda like electricity in that, on it's own it's not that useful, but the set of technologies that it enables are nothing less than world-changing.
Sci Show is awesome!
Wow this was fascinating
Awesome way to get engaged!
*Tear at the end*
That is SO COOL! I love technology!
Mindblowing video
A proposal! How exciting!
Yay proposals via sci show!!
How adorable!. And probably awkward for Hank lol. Congrats to the couple!
This is actually really cool. it's like programming life! Put genome functions into an microbial cell shell and it will start doing pre-programmed stuff that you want it to do.
It's only been tested on a small scale yes, but it's a prof of concept that could drastically change humanities future. Imagine if instead of refining stuff, we just grow it from artificial, genome engineered bacteria. That could literally mean material farms!
This is really exciting for me.
Artificial cells are my area of research! Good stuff.
This simultaneously frightens me and intriuges me.
Awesome!
Craig Venter is such a badass
creating any kind of life, real or not, with a printer really freaks me out. so much power to so many people...
i want to do tis. thsi is so freaking awesome
4:05 That was *almost* a blooper right there!
they just created artificial life.
Holy... I didn't think I'd live to see that happen in my life, I'm mind blown.
We need an eventual update regarding this couple
the way he said "which is just very sweet" is just very sweet
Well that was just the cutest thing ever.
Seriously, this channel is so interesting haha
this is great
Congratulations.
The thing he describes in this is exactly what I was planning to make in my lifetime, well there goes my plans.
I recently heard a Radiolab episode about CRISPR! This reminded me of that episode. Sounds like CRISPR and 3D printing could be competing gene modification technologies of the future. Maybe you guys should do an episode on CRISPR as well!
This is so cool :)
I'm glad to see synthetic biology getting some love on this channel.
That proposal though!
trust me. this is something special.
Have you done a program on chemicals in household goods: ie soap, dish soap, laundry detergent, deodorant, other cleaning goods, carpeting, plywood ???
I like that term: "convinced it to stay alive"
Smooth, Mr. President.
+Michael Hein Now THAT'S how you make a proposal! Seriously. I'd accept it.
Flubber anyone ?
that would be amazing^^
Wait. Did someone propose through CZcams? That's so sweet!
(It was at the end).
+The Pip Yep, my brother. She said yes :)
Cool!
HANK I LOVE YOU
Mr. President is absolutely killing it.
sounds like a new way for space travel
