    I have found that if you only have heavy body paints you can make your own close-to soft body equivalent by adding drops of Liquitex Flow Aid and retardant/slow dry/blending medium to your desired consistency.

    It looks good and yes those bottles are easy to squirt out a small amount of paint. Landscape painting works with soft body without adding water. Maybe portrait would work for heavy body. Anyway the Liquitex Basics Acrylic compared to this soft body would be interesting, They now have fluid paint as well with more colors. I wonder about color tinting. Also airbrushing.

    I am watching this video as someone that bought up on these paints before Christmas, but is still learning them (I haven't used them a lot yet). I am a little of that violet colour and now want it for my collection. I love how flat they dry. I have never liked paints that dry thick, when you don't want them too. Eg. when you outline something and it dries but you then layer over it and can still see the original brush strokes. I hate this. I know there is a purpose for thicker paints and seeing brushes strokes, it is just what I like.

    Very informative review Steph! I have always worked with the Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylics. It was interesting to learn that you barely needed to thin down your paints for this work (The Heavy body definitely is the opposite). Paint coverage is also a big deal for me. I might be switching paints hear in the future (not anytime soon, I have a lot of paints to go thru :)
    If I were to experiment though I might just go Primary's, White and Black! Your work's never cease to amaze me.....One day I will attempt a golf course landscape ;)

      very good Max! yep i loved the heavy body acrylics too and will continue to use them, but for the more detailed work these soft body acrylics are fantastic! primary colors with white and black is a good starting set for sure! :)

    I saw a CZcams video about the 4 different types of acrylic paint and she was saying that heavy body is good for adding texture or making artwork like Van Gogh. Heavy body doesn't give you the smoothness that soft body gives you. I think heavy body is harder to mix just because it is so thick.

    • @ThePaintingStoof
      @ThePaintingStoof  Před 3 lety

      hi Amanda! thanks for your comment. Yep for detailed realism paintings soft body acrylics work much better for me. The heavy body is great for textured art. Heavy body acrylics can be mixed easily using a palette knife- the texture of heavy body acrylics is closer to oil paint in my opinion. Happy painting! :)

    Another great review, thank you very much! This is helpful because heavy body paints seems to be the most popular ones, and I was wondering if (aside from impasto) the soft body ones were more limited somehow. But now I want to try them. Aside, have you ever tried the Winsor and Newton professional line of acrylics? They are very popular here in the UK, and meant to be in between heavy and soft body in terms of viscosity. Also have limited color shift. I'd be keen to know what your impression is. x

    • @ThePaintingStoof
      @ThePaintingStoof  Před 3 lety

      thanks very much Francesco! I'm glad you enjoyed the review! I have used Winsor and Newtons professional acrylics- I like them, but I like the tubes better for the liquitex brand. (They are easier to open.) The paint quality is great for both brands in my opinion!

    Can you please tell me, Acrylic heavy body or soft body which is best for abstract painting?

    • @ThePaintingStoof
      @ThePaintingStoof  Před 2 lety

      Depends on what type of abstract painting you are going for - one with thick bold colors and texture would look better with heavy body paints. If you need more fluidity in your paint for an abstract painting, soft body will be better.

  • @sandihester
    @sandihester Před 3 lety

    Great video! I just bought some of these because I've developed some allergies to oil paints (which is such a bummer). I really like more opaque paint - did you find that these were plastic looking like regular acrylics (I hate that about regular acrylics!) - fellow artist and CZcamsr

    • @ThePaintingStoof
      @ThePaintingStoof  Před 3 lety

      Hi Sandi- I have yet to find an acrylic paint that has the same buttery look of oil paints. I'm sorry to hear about your allergy- that has to be tough. For these liquitex paints, the opacity varies by color (for example the yellows are usually more translucent) but in general the pigmentation is great in these paints! They do still have that acrylic paint look when they dry, though. Maybe you can get a varnish that would make your paintings look a little less plastic-y for a completed painting?

    How do these compare to golden acrylics. I do like the extender nib on the end. Did you have to add any mediums? Did they flow well on the brush? I use to buy that brand for students but lately I love the goldens. Nice review and painting. Thanks for sharing. 😀😀😀

    • @ThePaintingStoof
      @ThePaintingStoof  Před 3 lety

      thanks! I have tried golden heavy body acrylics and they are great but have not tried the fluid acrylics by Golden yet. I did not have to add any medium for the liquitex soft body acrylics, they flow very well without anything added!

  • @mattariety955
    @mattariety955 Před 3 lety

    Subbed thank you ! , i work with oils * still a noob ) but i also want to get into acrylics , do you find your paint blobs dry on your pallet quickly or only once its spread thin ? do you recommend a wet pallet ?

    • @ThePaintingStoof
      @ThePaintingStoof  Před 3 lety +1

      Hello! Thanks for your comment- when using acrylic paint, it can take hours or even a full day for a blob of paint to dry and harden. The thinner lines of paint/paint spread out on a canvas can dry from a few minutes to an hour. You can buy slow drying mediums to make the paint stay wet longer, but I don’t usually use those myself. I’m not sure what a wet palette is... haha I just use disposable palette sheets or parchment paper as a palette. 😊👍🏼 with acrylics you need to work more quickly when blending than you would need to with oils, but with acrylics your paint dries faster so your colors don’t get mucky as often from blending. If you use the layering method for your oil painting you get avoid the mucky color blending because your layers dry before adding more color/blending. Hope that helps!
