Is the ASUS ROG Ally Worth It in 2024? - Long Term Review

  • The ASUS ROG Ally is in equal measure both jaw-droppingly amazing and frustrating beyond belief. For some, an absolute boon and a dream device. For others, a nightmare worth avoiding. There's a lot more good than bad, but its flaws definitely warrant a mention - especially if you're not particularly tech savvy.

      @@brandonybarra6595 Wait...did they actually fix the issue of the Device cooking Micro SD cards? because i just got my very first handheld gaming PC device yesterday and i went with the ROG Ally.
      also the major contributing factor for me that made me go with a Ally over the Steam Deck OLED is simple and it from what ive heard not fixable (not feasibly nor on on Valves end mind you but Technically fixable although SEVERLY unlikely) certain games i play and want to play on the go are simply off the table due to either simply no support, not available on Steam (Eh Hem minecraft) or NOT ALLOWED TO WORK due to anti cheats lacking Linux Support. and that was a massive issue for me. i wanted to be able to buy one of these and have assurances that i can just install a game i like to play and play it, not check if its even available to play.
      also being locked down to a single Application is a huge negative.

    Watched your Legion 14" laptop video as I had that laptop added to my cart on BestBuy. Super glad you covered the speakers as that's important to me and other reviewers said they're "decent", when clearly they're not 🤣. Then saw you had an Ally video and I love your style of review and it seems spot on with my experience as well. I also had the Legion Go and outside of the big screen, it doesn't hold much against the Ally.

      Heyo, dude, I watched a ton of your videos over the last few months! 🙌 Glad to see you here! Oh they're not decent at all. That's at best an understatement and at worst (or most realistic) a flagrant lie. They're even worse in real life than they are in the video, it's a hard thing to convey. Then again, it's an amazing laptop and with the 2024 G14 and Omen 14 retailing for a billion dollars, it's still the best option in my opinion.

      @@CGD.Studio Glad you've seen some of the videos! I've run out of things to cover on the Ally, hence the major slow down on the channel 🤣. I bought a G14 / RTX 4060 a week ago but returned it as the touchpad would glitch out every few minutes. Then after seeing reviews, there are multiple "Keyboard/Touchpad stops working for a few seconds", which is a major red flag IMO.
      The Legion is on a great sale, but the speakers are a deal breaker as I don't like wearing headphones much. However with the price difference where you're at is crazy and a no brainer to get the Legion laptop like you said.
      That's an area where the Ally is awesome, it almost sounds like 3d sound when playing and has superb quality for a handheld. I've also been using the Steam Deck OLED a lot lately and it's pretty great with a 45FPS cap. Then just using moonlight to stream from the main PC to it for more intense games. Thanks for the help, I'm going to check the Omen out, it's $650 off at just $1,199 for the 4070 model on BestBuy right now, that could be worth it.
      EDIT: Just realized it's the 16" OMEN that's on sale which is a bit too big :/

      It's probably a mix between playing for longer periods of time *and* playing at high TDPs. I assume that 15W isn't high enough (or hot enough, rather) to burn anything. That being said, if it were me, and if I needed more storage, I would just buy a larger 2230 SSD and replace the existing one with that. I think 2TB is the maximum capacity which, personally, is more than enough. 😁

    I’m mulling between the two and I can’t decide. Mainly I like how easy and quick it is to pick it up the sd and start gaming and their quick resume function but I want to be able to play some games that the deck can’t emulate and the options to play different libraries easily. I want to use this for work breaks and roadtrips but I don’t know is the ally would be too much of a hassle to bring out in some situations. What would you think would be a better fit especially with the ally 2 be announced would it be better just to wait and see if some of the problems are fixed in that model?

    • @CGD.Studio
      @CGD.Studio  Před 3 měsíci +5

      Hello hello! The Ally 2 isn't going to be much better, if at all. It might have a slightly larger battery, and it's probably not going to have any microSD issues, but other than that, AMD's upcoming Strix Point isn't coming before Q4 2024 or, most likely Q1 2025.
      If you need more power, then the Ally is obviously the better choice, but its battery life leaves a bit too much to be desired. It's great if your road trip lasts for 2 hours and you have a battery bank prepared. 😁
      With that being said, I'm running Windows on my Steam Deck and it works flawlessly. Even better than on the Ally, with no sleep issues whatsoever. Game Pass runs amazingly well and so does the Epic Games store. Really nothing to complain about.

    • @CGD.Studio
      @CGD.Studio  Před 3 měsíci +1

      @cmgerner Thanks for watching, glad you like it! Personally, I've been running Xbox Game Pass games on my Steam Deck with zero issues, but you probably have to install Windows on it, either as a dual boot or exclusively. And I'm saying probably as there's a small chance someone figured out a simpler workaround, but that still hasn't been the case, to the best of my knowledge. If you're okay with doing that, you're gonna have a great time overall. And it's easy, too, just like installing Windows on a PC or a laptop. So, not much of an answer but I hope it's been helpful. 😅 If you don't want to mess around with that stuff then I suppose the Ally would be a much better choice, but if I were buying a handheld PC right now, I would undoubtedly go with the Steam Deck OLED, primarily because of the battery life. Although if you need the power then the Ally is still the way to go. Working on a Steam Deck video as we speak! Should be out this Thursday/Friday! Still an incredible device.

      Two things: First, if you’ve got GamePass and don’t mind the poor battery life, this thing is a no-brainer; Second, if you have basic computing skills, installing the new drivers will almost double your performance with Frame Generation…
      This thing runs Forza Horizon: 1080p at close to 120 fps… it’s a beast, but obtaining that required wattage that gives you maybe an hour of battery…
      I bought one with an Z1Extreme used from a friend for 400, I was going to buy my daughter a cheap gaming PC, and he suggested I buy the Ally off him; which ended up giving me better performance per dollar then a cheap gaming PC…
      Weird Quirks: First, multi-use of a single USB-C port without a good hub is madness; I thought my USB-C input monitor would solve all of this: however, it doesn’t generate enough power for the Ally… So, I had to add a hub in-between to add additional wattage… besides that, it works like a dream for desktop high setting 1080p@120fps or low setting 1440p@80-90fps… Second, using the onboard software will run you into eventual problems, if you just use the desktop with big enough icons, that seems to work the best… Third, I made three software modifications that basically perfected this thing: 1, the provided AC adapter has a special USB tag, map it and add it to the generic driver so you can get full power in desktop mode, no matter the adapter used; 2, create a desktop icon that uses the “sleep mode” you want, and hot key the power button to it; 3, remember to turn off the gamepad when using a controller… I set it to turn off automatically when a Bluetooth device connects, this is not for whatever reason not set to default.

    I've been watching a lot of videos; been meaning to get one of the Big Three so far I'm leaning towards the Steamdeck OLED.
    Legion and Ally is powerful but I have a feeling that the support expectancy will be, well, not that long and not to mention these two are from hardware based companies so the "ultimate fix" for the Legion and Ally will inevitably be Legion 2 and Ally 2 and if those also have problems; you guessed it Ally 3 and Legion 3.
    Steam is primarily a software based company and the Deck is built around Steam. Support is still on-going and is very active from what I read about.

    Very good points. When it's working, it's amazing. And when it doesn't work, you wonder why. As a handheld console, it doesn't hit the mark, but as a handheld Windows PC, it, well, still doesn't quite hit the mark, but it's hard to ignore how amazing it is to hold this much power in your hands, and be able to dock it and use it as a desktop replacement if necessary. If they could fix the "jank" and increase the battery life, this would be a near perfect device. My main issue with using it as a desktop replacement is that, as you said, the device does not play nice with hibernation/sleep settings, and I can't really trust it to come out of hibernate/sleep in the same state that I left it, whether that means a bugged out Steam UI upon wake-up, or games not un-sleeping properly. I simply wouldn't feel confident constantly switching from handheld then using it in docked mode as a desktop replacement if I was doing important work on it.

Been able to run Most (i say most since I haven't tried all) of my games at a decent framerate, and runs quite well when plugged in + on Turbo mode. It has its hiccups for sure but that's part of the trade off vs going for a gaming laptop instead - but the fact that I can just take a quick break play for 30 minutes with a controller built in, is an experience that no laptop can really do.

      Hi Muhamad! You shouldn't wait for the second one as it's not going to be noticeably more powerful (if at all) nor efficient. It might have a slightly larger battery life, but that's not going to make as big a difference as it did with the Steam Deck OLED, because the Z1 Extreme only gets to shine past 15W. And it might also fix the microSD slot issue (assuming ASUS hasn't already fixed it with its latest revisions).
      All in all, buying an ROG Ally now is probably your best choice, as its price has come down quite a bit over the last few months, and you can even buy one used for even less money.

    I have the ROG Ally and I've been astonished by how it performs with open world games. I've been playing Dragon Ball Z Kakarot, Witcher 3, FF XV and Yakuza 0 on it non stop setting it at 1080P display Medium Graphics Preset ant 20W Custom Profile. I always get 45-60 fps stable under this profile without being hot or noisy in my ally. Coming from someone who owns a n3ds and psp as handhelds before, I was shock by how much I can do with this pc handhelds today. Lastly, emulation - I never knew I can emulate PS3 and Wii U games on my ROG Ally until today via Emudeck!

    • @kysierkevin
      @kysierkevin Před 4 měsíci

      Also regarding the sleep functionality of ROG Ally, You need to set it up properly to make it work perfectly. Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > When I press the power button On battery (From Sleep switch it to Hibernate) Plugged in (From Sleep switch it to Hibernate). So that everytime you press the power button, it will hibernate your rog ally causing it draw minimal watts just to keep it under "sleep like state" then when you press it again it will instantly boot up within 5-6 seconds.

    • @CGD.Studio
      @CGD.Studio  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Yeah man, it's an amazing device overall, both for AA/AAA games but also emulation as well. :) I talked about the Hibernation thing in the video but I don't think that's a fix, primarily because it's never 5-6 seconds, at least not for me. It's always between 10-20, and a few times I had to wait even longer for no obvious reason. It's just not a good solution overall, especially given how expensive this thing is. And the weird thing is, I have Windows on my Steam Deck and it sleeps and wakes up flawlessly each and every single time, so not sure what's up with the Ally.

      Honestly, if that's the case, and your library is tied to Steam - or you're okay with installing Windows and a few third-party apps - you'll probably be better off going with the Steam Deck OLED. It really fixed everything that was "wrong" with the original one. A much better display, 90Hz, it's OLED, the device is less noisy, and the battery life is supposedly amazing as well. The Ally, when it works, is truly phenomenal, but the fact that you can't game for longer than 90-120 minutes is really a turn off.
      And people like to talk about the Ally as if it's amazing for everything and that's just not the case. You're not going to blazing through Cyberpunk as if it were nothing. For AA games and indies, the Steam Deck is still *more* than sufficient. I mostly end up playing indies as well so the Ally's extra power rarely gets put to good use. And if it's a AAA game, a masterpiece, I wouldn't want to play at 720p low settings either as that would heavily diminish the overall experience.
      I would also suggest looking into the OG Steam Deck as well as you can get one nowadays for, like, $350 or even less. That's, like, the best deal available right now, and it's a-ma-zing for that price. You get ±75% of the whole experience for a fraction of the cost. Working on a video as we speak, should be up by Thursday/Friday! That's the device I would go for today if I were buying for the first time (or the OLED if I wanted to spring a bit more and wanted a better overall handheld). $600-$700 for a portable PC is kinda... I don't know, too much? For that kind of money you can buy a used Xbox Series X *and* a used Steam Deck (more or less). People are just willing to pay a ton of money for the experience and the novelty, but I really don't think it's worth the investment compared to what you're getting.

    What do you prefer ally , steam deck or legion ?

    • @CGD.Studio
      @CGD.Studio  Před 4 měsíci +1

      If most of your games are tied to Steam (and you want to perhaps emulate older consoles on the side, up to PS3/Switch), then the Steam Deck is basically your best option as it's the cheapest and offers 70-80% of the ROG Ally experience (and is even better in certain scenarios like battery life, performance-per-watt [at lower wattages], and frankly price). The fact that you can get a Steam Deck for so cheap nowadays is simply mind-blowing, and you can get most launchers and programs to run on it rather well if you're willing to follow a few guides and roll up your sleeves.
      The ROG Ally is mighty expensive but also incredibly powerful, and it's just a joy to use. If you can find one on a sale and you want a *lot* of power (at the cost of battery life), then it's definitely worth it. I mostly play stuff from Xbox Game Pass, MOBAs, and free stuff from the Epic Games Store, so the Ally is a much better pick for me.
      The Legion Go is a completely different beast. It's much larger and heavier, it's almost a gaming tablet. It's also more versatile, with two USB-C ports (and USB4 support), which is pretty incredible. It's not as polished as the Ally because Lenovo is still updating it every so often, but in a few months it'll surely be as feature-rich as the Ally is right now. So it all really depends on your needs, the amount of power you want, and where your games are located (and how demanding they really are). You can get a 64GB LCD Steam Deck for something like $350 these days. You can then just buy an M.2 SSD 2230 that's 256GB or 512GB, pop it in, and have yourself a spectacular handheld gaming PC that'll still blow you away - at about 4/6 the cost of an Ally (unless you buy one on sale or open box a place like Best Buy).
      I will always advocate for the Steam Deck as it's the best bang-for-the-buck option. If you spend $700 on an Ally or Legion Go, that's a much bigger investment.
      Btw, there's a Legion Go video in the works, expect it in the next month or so! 🙌

      Heyo Justin, I'm totally against buying anything overly expensive from Chinese OEMs, no matter how good or surprisingly efficient they might be at manufacturing their devices, be they Windows- or Android-based. Anything more expensive than, I dunno, $299 is a no-no in my book. If something goes wrong, if there's a QC issue, if any specific part of it happens to malfunction, the fact that I'd have to ship it back to them and then, eventually, in a billion days, get it back is a dealbreaker for me.
      And, frankly, I no longer see any good reason why one would take the risk. Back in the "old days" when we didn't have a Steam Deck or an ROG Ally or a Legion Go, buying the GPDs and AYANEOs and ONEXPLAYERs of the world made sense. Now, not so much. Plus they're a fair bit more expensive because they can't leverage the economies of scale. Smaller batches, smaller production runs, higher costs, higher "MSRP."
      With that being said, I have reviews of the Legion Go, Steam Deck LCD and, hopefully, an MSI CLAW lined up, if that tickles your fancy. 😁

    Got my ROG ally coming tomorrow along with a horde of accessories. 2TB SSD was a bit more than I was expecting! but hi ho! Can someone speak to how the ROG ally and Steam Deck oled compare when docked? I can't lie. I dont have a gaming pc and don't feel like i would use one enough. I have a series x. So, not being able to play some AAA on one of the handhelds is not an issue if i can just play it on that. I don't have a large steam library. Im talking under 5 titles total. I mainly want one for emulation and to play some steam games. I feel like it would be docked a lot and want to make the best purchase for what i would use them for.

      I see no reason for you to pick up a Steam Deck OLED if it's almost gonna be hooked up to a monitor or TV. :/ The upgraded display is amazing, but you're rarely going to see it in action. I would go for an ROG Ally Z1 Extreme if I were you. It has a much stronger CPU, 8 Zen 4 CPU cores, and it's a much better device for emulation as well (PS3, Switch). Or, even better, an LCD Steam Deck for, like, $250. It's more than capable enough and it'll do the job just fine, all the while not burning a hole through your wallet. Windows runs great on it, I use mine for RPCS3 and Game Pass all the time!

      I guess another angle you should look at is where are your games located? You said you only have five or so Steam games, so if you're okay with putting Windows on the Steam Deck OLED (or using something like the Heroic Games Launcher for Epic Games Store or something else for Battle.net) then that'd be a great purchase.
      I'm like you, I have maybe 10 games on Steam, 15, whatever, and I don't want to play any of them. I'm a filthy Game Pass abuser and I have lots of games on the Epic Games launcher as well, so for me the ROG Ally or the Legion Go make a lot more sense.
      The Steam Deck is the best all-around device, and you can't go wrong with the OLED model if you're into emulation and other less demanding titles. Plus you'd be getting incredible battery life and a spectacular screen as well.
      The Legion Go warrants a mention as well. You're getting two USB4 ports and the best display on any handheld. It's a tablet as well, and you can hook up an eGPU further down the line if you want (without spending a ton of money on ASUS' proprietary XG Mobile). Working on a review as we speak! It's my absolute favorite out of the three, but only because it fits my needs best. And, again, the screen is to die for.

    • @Coop540
      @Coop540 Před měsícem

      @handheld.consoles most of my games are located on my Xbox account. 95% Xbox 3% Playstation and 2% steam. I have some Google play stuff but nothing that would merit putting them on one of these. Maybe Old School Runescape with a keyboard and mouse. I primarily game on my 85 inch hi-sense smart TV with android OS. I have a Bluetooth Xbox controller that had a stand for a phone, but remote play gets old. I'm familiar with emulators and tweaking them. Really want to try resident evil outbreak since they are able to play online now. I had it when I was a kid and I had no internet. So emulators is a big thing for me.

    • @CGD.Studio
      @CGD.Studio  Před 2 měsíci

      It's not perfect, sure, but you can actually get some truly stellar performance in a lot of today's AAA games (or, rather, games that are 2/3/4 years old). Using FSR is basically a must and so is playing at 720p, but on a display this small (or large, depending on how you look at it), it always looks great to my eye.
      60 FPS is not a given, though, that's true, but a stable 40-45 still feels stellar because of the VRR display.

  • @JapanStep

    During an interview with Techlusive, Asus India Vice President Arnold Su said, "...we most likely will launch a second-generation handheld gaming console this year. We will still keep the Windows features, but we will focus more on gaming." If you didn't buy one yet and can wait for a few months, it might be worth the wait. I'd be happy with more battery life, 32 GB RAM and better thermals.

    • @CGD.Studio
      @CGD.Studio  Před 2 měsíci

      I doubt they'd be able to fit in a bigger battery maybe 45Wh. 50 might be a stretch even though the MSI Claw has a similar shape and a larger battery (but a different motherboard layout). And for 32GBs of RAM they'd probably charge a fortune. :/ I want them too but I'm pretty sure they'd result in a very tangible price hike. Next year's Strix Point handhelds, though, are gonna be insane! And even Snapdragon Elite X ones if they ever come to market. Stellar iGPU performane and efficiency, a killer combo (but a different architecture so it would have to deal with translation layers and whanot).

      It does, but it's still frustrating that you *have* to do that to get a consistent experience. These things aren't cheap, and sleep/wake is a key feature to a handheld gaming device. And sure, waiting 10-15 seconds to resume playing isn't the end of the world, but it *does* feel like we're all sort of beta testing these products (but paying a lot for the "privilege"). :/

      Well it all depends on what you want to do with the thing and where your games are located. If you have a large Steam library and don't want to play truly demanding games, then the Steam Deck *would* be the better option. If you're into mods, then you should probably go with the Ally. :) Both are amazing devices, although if I were buying a handheld PC *right now*, I would just go with the Steam Deck LCD and save a ton of money. It delivers, like, 70% (if not more) of the overall experience and is incredibly "cheap" nowadays, as opposed to the Ally and Legion Go which retail for more than the PS5/Xbox Series X.

      You can get the LCD Steam Deck for, like 350 or something. That's an insanely good deal! And if you like it, you can always sell it afterwards and buy the Ally. You can install Windows on your Steam Deck as well, not sure about modding through SteamOS (probably doable, I'm just not a mod guy), but if that doesn't work, Windows runs incredibly well (with a few third-party apps).

      Hi Jojo! Well, it depends on who you ask. Supposedly ASUS was able to fix the issue a few months after release with subsequent units, but people are still having issues. It's not as widespread an issue as it was in the past, but that might also be due to the fact that people aren't complaining about it all that much because so many owners don't even use the microSD card slot out of fear of it malfunctioning - me included.
      So, personally, I would advise against using it unless you're only gaming at, like 10-15W, due to the heat. If you need more storage space, you can buy a larger 2230 M.2 drive and replace the default one. It's an easy process.
