    If you are looking for something you have never done before, then the Reward Mine is the next stop for you. Laying in the shadows of Mount Whitney (2nd Tallest Mountain in the United States), the Reward Mine is very different than your traditional mine. The reason is that one section of the mine is large enough for you to drive inside and go farther than a quarter mile. You can explore a large portion of the mine inside your vehicle. Thus, it takes mine exploration to a whole new but scary level.
    Join Joshua Noesser as him and his friends explore the Reward Mine which he provides a Trail Review and Trail Guide of this epic and one of his Top 5 trails in California.

    Cool video! I hiked into this mine about 10 years ago and did the whole thing on foot. Some of those lower areas have some false floors that are undercut by other open areas below them. One of those ladders is the main vertical shaft that leads up into the mountain and which you can approach from above if you hike up the mountain on the other side and go into the mine that way. It’s a pretty extensive mine altogether. The part everybody drives into are the more modern workings that were added sometime later. The oldest workings are on the other side of the mountain and worth going into if you make the hike up to them.

      I've gone down that vertical shaft on rope. About 250' of mainly vertical shafts if I recall. I dropped my canteen belt down the haulage side of the shaft and when I got to the bottom it wasn't there. Every time I'm in the area I swear I'll go back for those canteens but have never had the time so far. The clamber going straight up the canyon to the other side is grueling but the hike going over the newer workings, out and around the ridge is longer but easier with some really stunning views.

    Just so you know, the tunnel does not look like it was cut through a lot of material that was gold bearing--no iron stains, magnesium yellows, or copper greens. All gold/silver bearing minerals you would see farther north towards Bishop, or on the Nevada side of the Owens Valley. This was primarily a lead mine, but yes, they did take out a moderate amount of gold.

    • @Trailsoffroad
      @Trailsoffroad  Před 10 měsíci +1

      We can see that. Although the mine was originally started because of a gold vain. I believe it was something like a 6 foot wide vain that was mostly gold and iron.
      If you look up the history on the mine it will say it was a primary Gold and Silver with Lead and other things as secondary.

    • @callmeBe
      @callmeBe Před 10 měsíci

      @@Trailsoffroad Thanks. I write this because I use to live in the area, and did a modest bit of mining around there. When they removed the load, then, they went far beyond the pay streak and obliterated everything. What can you say, they were super efficient. Not much of interest there for us geologists . . . Today it does not present as particularly gold bearing.
