    Many ornamental flowers and cut flowers are TOXIC. ALWAYS do your own research and take responsibility for the plants that you introduce around your kids, pets, and everyone else. Use common sense when handling plant materials: wear gloves, always wash hands, avoid contact with face, etc. NEVER consume any plant which has not been positively identified with complete certainty to be safe and edible. Before planting anything, research to determine whether specific flowers are considered invasive where you live or if there are laws that apply to their planting in your area.

    I'm growing zinnias for my butterfly/hummingbird garden.I have orange king,scarlet flame,oriole,purple prince,state fair,canary yellow and forecast oh and california gaints.I have a lot that I've turned into a garden.All of my zinnia are flowering and over 4 feet tall.I love seeing the hummingbirds,gold finches and butterflies.I prefer the daisy/coneflower shape zinnia blooms over fully double because they attracted more pollinators.

    Thanks for the video! I gave zinnias one shot when I first started gardening, and I hated the result, though it was surely due to my own ignorance. I picked a variety called peppermint stick, and I hated how unpredictable the coloration was. Most had the occasional bright solid red petal rather than the light red speckles on white that I expected. I also had no idea that I had to support them, and so the stems were curved and snake-like. Overall the plants felt scraggly. Yours however, look lovely and make me want to try again with a different variety (probably the benary's giant salmon). I'll also check out your FAQ before planting :)

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers

I love zinnias in the vegetable garden, this is my second growing them as a side complement to a 8 year old vegetable plot. I grew wedding white last year but wanted something taller than could stand up to the vegetables I grow; so went with the giant lime and had the same experience of early dirty centers you address in this video, nonetheless I love them and will replant them next year. I haven’t tried the Benary Series and will order some for next year. I did try the Queen Lime Orange this year and am a bit disappoint so far. I’ll give them more time to mature. Zinnias-I have not grown any for years BECAUSE seems as if bottom 2/3 of plant stems/leaves always looked ugly with lots of brown spots, etc. and honestly never liked the FEEL of stems. Beautiful! You grow so many zinnias do you ever save the seeds for the following year? If so would you get the same beautiful color? Thanks 😊

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers
      @TONYAwiththeflowers  Před 4 lety +1

      I save some zinnia seeds every year. Since I grow so many colors, the seeds are usually pretty diverse because of the bees helping to cross pollinate everything. Always a pretty surprise! 🌱🌱🌱

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers
      @TONYAwiththeflowers  Před 4 lety +1

      As long as they're getting enough sun and are healthy, it seems like they have no trouble sending up new growth. 🌱🌱🌱

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers
      @TONYAwiththeflowers  Před 4 lety

      I generally don't feed my zinnias, just lots of good quality compost when I'm preparing the beds in the spring. 🌱🌱

      How do you get long stems for cutting
      Do you mulch around your zinnia plants

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers
      @TONYAwiththeflowers  Před 4 lety

      The more stems you cut, the taller the plants become. After the second cutting, stems should be very long. As for mulch, I use weed barrier fabric. 🌱🌱🌱

    I was wondering about seeds, you mentioned how the Benarys Giants were more expensive,and mentioned buying more of certain ones when a sale came up. Why not just save seeds? Do you not get enough? Are they not as good for some reason?

    Do you ever have problems with zinnias getting black spots...I bought from a Amish greenhouse and some had mold in a few days and the others had black on their leaves....
    Love your vlogs and I sent your one on zinnias to The Stivers you tube site because Zack loves them...also they are Kentuckians...

    Thank you for this visually stunning and informative video! Is there a dark red zinnia variety which is a true dark red? I see that there are Benary's Scarlet, Benary's Deep Red, and some other red varieties, but often colors look very different on media than live, so I am having a hard time deciding which, if any, of these red varieties to buy. I hope you have a bountiful season!

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers
      @TONYAwiththeflowers  Před 3 lety

      Yes, I winter sow my zinnias about two weeks before my last frost date. They're quick growing and frost tender, so I definitely wait until much later than some other plants. Hope that helps. Happy gardening!

    Could you help me to try to get an idea of how many I should plant, for my cut garden next year? If I planted 6 plants of each color, about How many stems would you say that would give me a day or week? Or about how many do you get a week & how many plants is that from?

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers
      @TONYAwiththeflowers  Před 3 lety

      It's really hard to say how many plants. I think ten of each color would be a really good starting point. Lots of options, too! Good luck! 🌱🌱

    Your flowers are breathtaking with beauty and nature. Is there a particular fertilizer you use and do you direct sow them. I have grown zinnias this year for the first time but for some reason the blooms aren't as big as they were in front of package. I grew state fair and cut and come.

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers
      @TONYAwiththeflowers  Před 4 lety

      I don't fertilize my zinnias, rather just make sure that the soil has lots of healthy finished compost at planting time. If the flowers are small, I would check that they're getting enough sun and water. Both can be an issue. Good luck! 🌱🌱🌱

    What spacing do you use when planting your zinnias? And do you pinch when they're younger to encourage branching? Seeing your space always helps since we're just north of the river in Ohio.

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers
      @TONYAwiththeflowers  Před 4 lety +3

      Since my yard is so small, I plant really close - like 6 inches between each plant. The flower blooms are a little smaller at this spacing, but I'm able to get tons of flowers in a tiny space. 🌱🌱🌱

    Love your Zinnia video. I'm thinking of planting a bed of Benary Giants. My question is are these a better cut flower and one that you would not recommend as a bed flower?
    Thanks

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers
      @TONYAwiththeflowers  Před 3 lety

      Benary's Giants get very, very tall - over 6ft here in my yard. Also, the foliage can start looking really rough by the end of the season, and may not be very pretty in the landscape. They may also need to be staked, as they can start falling over. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

      @@TONYAwiththeflowers Thank you for your very prompt reply. Would initial pinching help to maintain a more manageable height? I did see your video that included the landscape netting. I did plan on supporting the flowers.
