I saw it opening night at the Cineramadome in Hollywood. People applauded and the excitement was palpable. It's so crazy people outside Metropolitan cities didn't see it
Rincon Rubio that’s incredible. My parents always tell me that this was the last movie they ever saw at the Cinerama Dome on Sunset. I really have to check this movie out!
I have a feeling the Joker sequel with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga is going to remake this like the first movie remade Taxi Driver.
Brilliant performances. She’s phenomenal. Movie was ahead of its time.

I just came here to see the trailer after watching Chris Gore from Film Threat compare the Joker 2 trailer to New York, New York.
I know this movie hasn’t got a great reputation but this trailer makes it look friggin awesome
If they are following up Joker 2 with another homage to a Scorsese film and since Joker 2 is a Musical. I can see Joker 2 playing out this one, just like Joker played out like Taxi Driver.
I see young Robert DeNiro when he was so FINEEEE...I immediately wanna see the movie 😂
I caught this movie on tv one Saturday and I loved it even if it was bittersweet. I need to see about adding this to my Blu Ray collection.
Not even Sinatra can beat Minelli's rendition of this song.

sad fact: the disappointing response of this film drove Scorsese into depression (according to Wikipedia) because films budget was 14 million, a large figure at the time, and it grossed only 16.4 million at the box office, and this was made a year after taxi driver, which was a success
Haven't seen this yet but this looks like what La La Land tried to be and failed. A bright, glitzy homage to the golden age of Hollywood and musicals mixed with realistic, human drama. La La Land succeeded at the first but flunked at the second.

Such a shame this isn't a better film. Liza is and has always been a powerhouse, but Martin Scorcese didn't know what he was doing with her or the genre he was trying to be ironic about. De Niro, as usual, is just being De Niro. The whole thing, the production, the budget, just seems like a waste to me. Whether it was trying to subvert the genre of musicals or not, it didn't subvert or artfully pay homage either. Cabaret did it better 5 years before.
Ralph Daay You can't completely blame De Niro or Minnelli for the weak and drawn out dialogue. Most of it was improvised and the actors probably didn't know what to do. But, I will say that in nearly every scene he was in, De Niro was so overpowering and he seemed to phone it in so much, it was frustrating to watch most of the film.
I agree. I went into it with really high expectations and was left disappointed. It's still okay, but I wouldn't watch it again. It could have been so much better.

After Taxi Driver and before Raging Bull, I found this one to be a disappointment. Not one of Scorsese's best.
Scorsese felt the same way. Apparently, the production put him in the hospital, and almost killed him.
@@adamzanzie he didn't feel disappointed with the film though, it was a passion project of his if I'm not mistaken, it was the film's reception that disappointed him

I've been looking to watch this one for a long time, is it really bad or is it just different than what people usually expect from musicals?
@@knurdyob Is diferent from other musicals, because it has a crude and realistic story, bu the movie itself is very well made. The scenarios are very detailed, and Scorsese tried to replicate the Old Hollywood musicals by recording all the movie in studio, and it has a very sumptuous musical number nearly at the end, named Happy Endings (aslo a little ironic, because the sre no happy ending in the movie).
