My school does what they call a Jumpstart. They come for three half days and rotate through rooms and are assessed. After the 2nd day, the K teachers get together to make their lists and then on the 3rd day, the kids will spend that day in the room they will be in for the year. This takes place at the end of August and school started the Thursday after Labor Day. It is very helpful and goes well. Not all enrolled K students attend because it’s not mandatory so some you will have to place blindly but at least you get a good picture of the majority. Good luck! Good it goes well and is helpful.

You may want to keep 1 tote of those books so you can switch them out throughout the year.

I agree. I taught for over 25 years and kept most books I bought or inherited for teacher read alouds, for special ed students, emergent readers, and for every age of student I had over the years. It's also easy to switch out books for holidays and during first and second semesters.
