Most of my writing falls into three categories: 1) I write things I want to remember, obviously. 2) Less obviously, I write things I want to forget/clear out of my brain. 3) I write as part of my thought process. When I'm thinking through a complex issue, as I reach partial conclusions or have a thought that might be useful, I jot it down. Not so I'll remember it, but more as a way to emphasise it to myself. It's like having a highlighter for my brain!

After the divorce I started to write my diaries to document my life with my daughter as a family on our own. Because I work in a museum I naturally started with pencils but soon after I restored my grandpa Omas and Verbana (obscure Italian maker from the 50's) and I continued using them ever since. I later bought a couple of modern pens that I could pass on to my daughter in the future. I now use them for work as well, I almost never print anything when I attend meetings, just my handwritten memos that are then archived as is. I like the idea that in 50 years my pages might look like something that was written in 1910.

I used them mainly for drawing... secondary for taking notes for work and otherwise... and lastly for soul soothing - can't describe or sanely explain this one; but looking at and handle the pens that I like calms me down and makes me happy.

I use my fountain pens to write letters and take notes during staff development trainings. I am a primary school teacher and I use my fountain pens in class to teach cursive handwriting. The students can see the fountain pen during the lessons because an overhead projector is connected to a ViewSonic. They really enjoy it when I show them what a flexible nib can do. If the students do well on their cursive writing lessons, and learn about the parts of a fountain pen, then they receive a fountain pen near the end of the academic year.

“I use my pens to write with!” Yes, fcuking, please! For the last 40 years since college. So, even in an “E-digital” environment where all docs and such are digitised, as they are now in my industry. I’m expected to use digital dictation and voice recognition apps. And, I do. But, I write a lot and as much as I can … and that’s all done with these “fountain pens,” ranging in age from maybe a month old to over 100 years old, and I love it. Also, SBRE - love you use the word “epistle.” It’s even better than “missive.” The meditative aspect of writing with a fountain pen and shaving with a straight razor are both similar in their anachronistic nature, as well as their elemental, ritualistic pleasure. Take care and keep up the disquisitions!! You inspire us all.

I think it’s important to have pens that can be used as an everyday carry, used for limited purpose, or as a collectible. For my EDC I have 3 pens I keep at work and use (Waterman Charleston) -1 black (with black ink), 1 blue (with blue ink), 1 white (with changing ink) that I keep in my office. I also carry a higher end pen (Delta Dolcevita) that I mostly use for signing or when I am at work and need to sign something or take notes on my 3x5 cards. I also have a Delta Dolcevita undersized that I keep at home for letter writing, journaling, etc. I have had all of these for well over 20 years.

I typically select three pens per week and put them in a Rickshaw sleeve, then look for as many chances to use them as possible: notes to myself, occasional letters, word games, journal entries, etc. Sometimes a pen stays in rotation for several weeks, but I try to get to all of them every so often. It's always fun to rediscover a less used pen and find something really enjoyable about it.

I have two uses for fountain pens:
    1. Drawing. Generally multi-color and assorted line qualities. I have no idea why I switched to pens from watercolor, at which I am less unskilled. Maybe boredom.
    2. Writing vocabulary translations in foreign language novels. Requires an EF and some dry ink, currently Lamy Red. All other writing is with a BiC, laptop, or phone.

    Greetings from Australia.
I have about 40 pens inked mostly in different colours.
    I teach Classical Piano.
I have over 40 students and I rotate my pens around and make sure each weekly entry is made in a different ink colour from a different pen. Of course I've penabled a few of my students; and on one occasion one of them attended a lesson with inky fingers. Haha.
But I use my pens in my everyday journal, and in many other journalling projects.
My pens are hand made in Australia and I have a thing about wooden pens made from exotic woods.
My latest pen is made from American Maple. It hasn't been varnished but it has been rendered with a resin. This pen still smells of wood and it is very tactile. The writing experience is awesome.
I've been involved with pens since Covid started. To write with a fountain pen is therapeutic.
Writing with my pens provides me with an outlet; just as important as playing the piano. It has changed my life in a different way and I never thought I would say that.

When COVID hit I decided that I would take up journaling to relieve the stress and anxiety that I was experiencing, especially once lockdowns were mandated. I had always liked fountain pens but my "collection" consisted of mainly school pens that I hadn't used in decades. So I set out to experiment with different formats of journaling and to purchase a few fountain pens that had piqued my curiosity. I ultimately decided to use the "mind dump" journaling format because it was a freeform of writing. The pens I purchased were the Lamy 2000 with a fine nib and a Sailor Pro Gear Slim with a medium nib and both pens have been just marvelous writers in their own right and have made my journaling journey extremely enjoyable. I also sent an early 1940 era vintage Sheaffer vacuum filler that had belonged to my father to a pen smith to replace the ebonite feed that I stupidly broken when I was trying to pull it and the nib out. Journaling with fountain pens has become a daily ritual that l love. It has excelled in helping me cope during the worst of COVId and greatly improved my mental health. I can't imagine having gone through all that without having had the release that journaling offered. I now recommend journaling to anyone I know who is struggling with stress and anxiety.

I use my fountain pens primarily for making notes in my planner, keeping work notes from meetings, writing down notes from books or videos for self-study, word games and to-do lists. Probably the only time I don't reach for them is when I'm balancing my checkbook and writing in the register. I don't like using my fountain pens on crappy paper because even though you can, it's easy to end up with fibers in the tines. I experienced a house robbery once and the thieves left behind a limited edition fountain pen that was sitting in plain view on my desk. We lost a great many items, but I was so glad they didn't take the pen!

Agree entirely - I use them for everything - notes, journals, commonplace book, tasting notes, grocery lists, to-do lists, marking papers, revising printed work, notes and greetings cards, and so on and so on. I only use fountain pens to write unless I absolutely can't - like signing pages of documents where I can't waste time waiting for the ink to dry. But like many of us fountain pen maniacs, I also just find excuses to write, since I quite simply love using my pens and various inks

Thanks for another wonderful video! My use of fountain pens mirrors Dr. Brown's - just about everything I write, is written with a fountain pen. I take my notes during meetings with my Karas Kustom Ink V2 (bullet-proof pen that survives drops on concrete floors - don't ask how I know). In my personal time, I write random thoughts in my journals (with a variety of pens from my collection, depending on my mood). I always have a pocket-pen with me (usually a Kaweco Al-Sport inked with Diamine Oxblood) to sign credit card receipts or take quick notes. I write letters to my sons (my boys call me "old school" for writing with a fountain pen instead of sending a text or email). And finally, I'm working on a novel (adventure/mystery set against a backdrop of blue-water sailing) using the world's greatest word processor - a fountain pen!
    Keep the videos coming!

Experiencing pain with other types of pens, after a sentence or two, any more, I use a fountain pen for anything that there's a fountain pen ink that'll stick to it. (A sharpie for plastic and the like. Don't write "War and Peace" on a Ziploc bag. 😁)
Means it's usually about 5 pens inked at a time. Water resistant for envelopes, a contrasting colour (usually red) for accenting, a non black water resistant for financial and legal signatures, the ink I'm currently using for correspondence for the month, and either a fairly generic black or blue for note taking, grocery list, etc.
Means some take time to run dry, and some can last a few days to a week.
I'm not a journaler, but the simple act of putting pen to paper can be relaxing and cathartic.
    Good topic, Dr Brown!

The profound surprise and personal reward of opening the envelope. I am looking forward to the renaissance of Pen Pals. Use them whenever and wherever you can. This way I would work through a philosophical treatise and create a stack of cards with a page number in square brackets and a quote or question. It can be re-written into some nice notebook later. Writing as a way to reflect and gain deeper understanding as an opposite for simple information collection. And I used various fountain pens with color inks for Goldlist Metod (very effective for building passive vocabulary in language learning). I try to write some notes and journal but I think i mostly end up doodling. Patterns, pseudo hieroglyphs, simple sketches, random words to practice handwriting as I listen to other things or watch youtube. it's a very normal thing for people with ADD. Some people knit or fold laundry, I doodle. I doodle with unreasonably expensive bespoke, handmade, acrylic and Urushi pens with sometimes custom ground or stacked nibs from a collection of over 50 bottles of ink from all over the world.

Having bought many pens during the last year and a half, I feel guilty for having ‘squandered money’ on many days on which I don’t get to use pens .. ( Grocery list, expenses of the day, meeting notes and then what ? Why did I need dozens of pens just for these ?)
I’ve now been thinking about journaling with using these pens as the primary reason (so as to justify their purchase) and the benefits of journaling as a bonus/secondary reason !

And a nice pen for use at home or anytime you want a nice pen. For example a sheaffer fineline or a parker 21 for school. A pelikan 200 for more prestige at work or you could also use the school pen. Finally you nice vintage eversharp skyline or a new pelikan m400 for example for personal use.

I like that you cover more topics than just pen reviews. I draw, therefore I am able to enjoy using my pens for 2 or 3 hours each day. Of course this is my active meditation time. (And since I'm only in it for the 'likes' you can find me on instagram.) I also like that you can be serious, on occasion. Some of the least valuable pen reviews are those stupid unboxing videos. Some of the best are your Disassembly Vids.

Im in agreement with you views. Im struggling to scale down my ink collection (cause the other virus.... the ink virus)... in short I havent not a reason to write every day..... does not matter... I write everyday just because...

I use them for everything when I'm home except for crossword puzzles, because they bleed through the newsprint or the printer paper.

Also merely doodling and scribbling. Playing with your pen’s line.

I try to use mine in any aspect of writing I like to journal about the things in life … theres a sci fi story bubbling in my head to be written… as you Doc use them all the time. I will use a bic reluctantly if I really must and pencils…. they’re better than bics … if you’re struggling for ideas, write out your favourite songs to practice the letter forms… or calligraphy, its because of you Doc Brown that I learned about pens and inks,,, the reason I will always say…
    Your A C E 💯x💯 👌 ✅ 👍 💙 Best wishes to all PenPeople 🫶

I keep a case with 3 with me. I don't always manage to, but try to make sure at least one has black permanent ink. I write lists and fill out forms at the bank or Dr's, and I wrote at least 1 letter or postcard per day. I have 8 pen pals. I'm also learning to write a new script: ϯⲙⲉⲧⲣⲉⲙⲛ̀ⲭⲏⲙⲓ
