MacBook Pro 16” 2019 Teardown-A Better Keyboard Can't Fix This Thing

  • Apple has made a few tweaks to their MacBook Pro formula, bringing us the most exciting hardware upgrade we’ve seen in years: the promise of a working keyboard. Not only did they finally replace the butterfly keyboard with a reinvented scissor keyboard, they also added a slightly larger display and a physical escape key! Such upgrade!
    Apple says this updated Mac is all about listening to the customer. And guess what? We're a customer-we bought this MacBook Pro! Have they listened to us and updated its repairability? Well... probably not. But you better believe that we tore it down anyway to find out.
    Check out the full Teardown on our site!

    Can confirm my 16 inch 2020 MacBook Pro had an angle sensor failure as well as display cable cracked and they replaced the whole display assembly for me. Before I sent it to them, I told them I also was having problems with it overheating and the fans spinning max speed from just medium use tasks. They said that's just how the 16 inch was and I asked if it could just be checked out while they had it. Since I got it back, the fans have NOT had the need to spin up to max speed, and the laptop has stayed a ridiculous amount cooler, and it ended up being that they replaced most of the internals on my laptop, but would nit tell me what for. They sent a sheet back with it explaining what they replaced and it was much more than just the screen and lid angle sensor. Is clear they are having problems, so if you have one would suggest just sending to them to check on it and you will get a whole new laptop back. It really is an awesome laptop now that the fans cant be heard over my music at last!

    Apple will always primarily choose to listen to investors prior to consumers. Yes, consumers DO shape the product lines down the pipeline of development, but internal design changes reflect Apple's goal to please investors: By ensuring they control the majority of their Part Repair Market Share.
    So long as Apple sells the product, their control on it's long-term maintenance ensures maximum profit is extracted both during, after, and post-mortem per product sold. It's madness. Monopolized Madness. But that's one of the many reasons for their High Value...

    • @r3d0c
      @r3d0c Před 4 lety +17

      As an investor, I like the strategy. And it's not a monopoly, you can buy computers, monitors, tables, phones from anyone you please. Apple's model does not fit the definition of a monopoly.

    • @astroboy2345
      @astroboy2345 Před 4 lety +8

      You are giving Apple too much credit in terms of them actually listening to anyone's opinion. Truth is Apple don't really care what anyone thinks - including investors. They've always been like this in the entirety of its 40+ year history. They create a product to follow their own industrial design vision. They kind of operate more like an architectural firm - design vision and realization of that vision is more important than any profit nor popular opinion.
      That is why Apple creates plenty of duds, but they also create a bunch of classics along the way. When they have a hit, they get so profitable that nothing will hurt them. If they create a dud, they scrap it and do it over again.
      Reality is Apple just don't care about what you nor what everyone else think. Because they think they know you more than you know yourself. History shows that they are right, more times than not.

They said they have to order for the whole top panel (aluminium body) which includes trackpad, keyboard, touchbar, (everything except logic board) because apparently the speakers and the these things are glued on to the body. Now it's covered under warranty, can't even imagine keeping this laptop post warranty!

      Some people want more than just function. Why don’t you just carry around a huge power supply hooked to battery powering a desktop motherboard with a beast of a CPU and some GPUs to boot? Then slap that to the back of a monitor! Boom! Now you have a portable computer! You could possibly have the most portable modular system ever conceived.....
      Form and Function MUST work together. I hate bad designs no matter how well they “perform”. I believe you have shrink the boundaries to push the boundaries.

      Why not just buy a 400-500 Euro Windows laptop and play the game? Those Windows laptops in general have 4-6x more FPS in games than a loaded MBP 13 2020 (which is faster than your 2019 model). Just make sure the Windows laptop has an Nvidia (MX230 or higher) or AMD graphics card (Vega 8 or higher).

      @bradrum1 Před 4 lety +1

      Dennis Schulz I this is correct. Though you do pay roughly 10-15% more than an equivalent (specs wise) product from a premium maker like Lenovo. The problem with MacBooks IMO is they force you into making several upgrades because a) the MacBook is not upgradable, b) not friendly with dual booting Linux and c) does not offer much in the terms of ports to a comparable Lenovo.
      The net result is that you end up having to spend 30% more to buy a Mac that will give you what you need to work as a developer that develops for Linux at least part of the time.
      This was not the situation before 2016... where a 2015 MacBook would be an awesome tool for most any kind of developer that needed to develop for Linux (at least some of the time)
