There are definitely leftwing idiots on Twitter who want to chill speech and use the power of the state to overreach, but that's not the vast majority of people who exist from conservative Democrats to progressives. The problem is that that wing of the Republican Party has grown to levels that actually do pose threats to democracy and the rule of law. I am someone who usually votes for Democrats - not because I agree with everything every Democrat says or does, but because I don't agree with the Republican platform at all. We need two (and ideally more than two) parties that 90% of whom agree on the premises of democracy, voting rights, anti-authoritarianism, avoiding & calling out violence and intimidation, and avoiding a government based on any religion. We had that before, but not anymore. The Republican Party is not the threat; the wings of ultranationalism Christian Nationalism, & fascism within the Republican Party are the threats.

I do believe that is their end game, I just haven't had the proper word to describe it until I read another post who called it a regime. Until now I have been loosely using the term dictatorship but there are too many who want a seat at the table of this new order of things so a regime seems to fit better. They have been making and passing laws for years and are not even obligated to tell the American people what laws they are trying to pass until it is over and done with then they enforce these new laws upon the American people who never even had a say in it. I thought we were supposed to have a democracy but I guess that is over now.
