படிக்கும் காலத்தில் சம்ஸ்க்ருதம் கற்க எனக்கு வாய்ப்பு இருக்கவில்லை. மதுரையில் 10 ஆண்டுகள் ஒரு வைணவப் பெரியாரிடம் சம்ஸ்க்ருதம் கற்றேன். அது 1953ல். அதோடு சரி. இளமையில் வறுமை காரணமாக மேலும் சம்ஸ்க்ருதம் படிக்க முடியாமல் போனது.
ஹிந்தி மொழியையே படிக்காதே என்ற சூழலில் சம்ஸ்க்ருதம் படிப்பது எப்படி?
மொழி வெறுப்பு நிறைந்த கெட்ட காலம் அது. ஆனால் எனக்கு சம்ஸ்க்ருதத்திடம் வெறுப்பு இருந்ததே கிடையாது. “இந்த பிறவியில் எனக்கு சம்ஸ்க்ருதம் கிடையாது” என்பது மீனாட்சி அம்மையின் திருவுள்ளம் போலும்.
தமிழ் ஒரு கண் என்றால் சம்ஸ்க்ருதம் மற்றொரு கண். இரண்டு கண்களும் முக்கியம். “பார்வை” சரியாக இருக்க வேண்டுமானால் இரண்டு கண்களும் தேவை. இந்திய மண்ணில் விஷயம் தெரிந்தவராய் உருவாக ஒருவருக்கு இந்த இரண்டும் வேண்டும்.
எம்.ஏ. (தமிழ்) படிக்கும் போது, “வட எழுத்து நீக்கி வருவது சொல்” என்ற பொருள்பட இலக்கண சூத்திரம் படித்தேன். அதாவது தொல்காப்பியருக்கு முன்பே தமிழில் வடமொழி இருந்திருக்கிறது. எனவேதான் ,“அதை நீக்கி” என்று கூறியிருக்கிறார். ஆக, தமிழில் சம்ஸ்க்ருதம் இருந்தது. பிற்காலத்தில் தேவநேய பாவாணர், பரிதிமாற் கலைஞர் உள்ளிட்டோர் “ஸ்” என்கிற வடமொழி எழுத்தைத் தவிர்க்க “சமக்கிரதம்”, “சமற்கிரதம்” என்றெல்லாம் சொல்லிக் காட்ட வேண்டி இருந்தது. காரணம் “ஸ்” என்கிற வடமொழி எழுத்தாம்.
அது சரி “வடமொழி” என்றால்?
சிலர் வடக்கிலிருந்து வந்ததால் என்று விளக்கம் சொல்வதுண்டு. ஆனால் வட (vata) என்ற சொல்லுக்கு ஆலமரம் என்று பொருள். ஆலின் கீழ் அமர்ந்து தான் உயரிய ஞான உபதேசங்கள் அருளப் பட்டன. அவற்றைக் கொண்ட மொழி; எனவே வடமொழி என்பேன். இது “பிரிட்டானிக்கா” கலைக்களஞ்சியம் தந்துள்ள விளக்கம்.
இது நமக்குத் தெரியாமல் போயிற்றே! அவன் சொல்லி நாம் தெரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டியிருக்கிறது பாருங்கள்!!
ஏகப்பட்ட இலக்கியங்கள் உடையது சம்ஸ்க்ருதம். எனவே அது ஞானமொழி. ராமாயணமும் மகாபாரதமும் சான்று. உலகில் மலையும் நதியும் உள்ள காலமெல்லாம் ராமாயணம் நின்று நிலைக்கும். “நல்லான் ஒருவன் வேண்டுமென்றால் ராமன் அங்கே இருக்கிறான்” என்பதல்லவா பழமொழி? சங்க நூல்களிலும் ராமாயண மகாபாரதம் காட்சி தருகிறது. புறநானூற்றுப் புலவர்களின் பெயர்களையே பாருங்களேன்! வான்மீகியார், நெய்தற்காகி, பாரதம் பாடிய பெருந்தேவனார், கலைக்கோட்டு ஆசான்… சம்ஸ்க்ருத இலக்கியம் பெரிய விஷயங்களைப் பேசுவது, அந்த ஞான அலை தமிழுக்குள் பாய்ந்திருக்கிறது. வள்ளுவர் சமஸ்க்ருத இலக்கியம் படித்திருப்பார். “நிரம்பிய நூல்”, “பல கற்றும்” போன்ற அவர் வார்த்தைகளைப் பாருங்கள். அவற்றைப் படித்திராமல் பொத்தம் பொதுக்கென பேசுபவர் அல்ல அவர். பிறரையும் “படி” என அறிவுறுத்துகிறார்.
தமிழ் போலவே சமஸ்க்ருதமும் செம்மொழி. ஆக, சம்ஸ்க்ருதம் படிப்பது தமிழுக்குத் தொண்டு. இப்படிப் பலரும் அறிந்த மொழி, அனைவரும் பாராட்டும் மொழி, பதவிப் போட்டி காரணமாக அனைவரும் படிக்க முடியாமல் செய்யப் பட்டிருக்கிறது. ஆனால் எல்லாரும் சம்ஸ்க்ருதம் கற்கணும். குறைந்த பட்சம் - ஆம் - குறைந்த பட்சம் பகவத் கீதையாவது படிக்கணும். சம்ஸ்க்ருதம் படிக்க வாய்ப்புக் கிடைத்த ஒவ்வொருவரும் புண்ணியவான்.
