Originally invented by test137E29 back in 2012, I decided to revisit the topic because there really isn't any clear cut video out there that demonstrates exactly everything you can do with these things.
SORRY I completely assumed UltimateRedstone had invented these! It turns out he popularized test's basic design. Link to that (and everything else mentioned) below!
For this video I focus solely on bolts that stick to the same height, but you can still do some tricky stuff with dropping them down a block (to make turns easier I suppose) or whatever you need to do. All it takes is some tinkering around!
Although I am not 100% happy with this video I figured there really isn't a great way to cover everything about these systems. I tried my best to show you guys how to make these work in your favor and of course I (or someone else) can answer all of your questions below!

I’m surprised these weren’t named “Cart Zippers” or just “Zippers”. It conveys both their form (looks like a zipper on a jacket) and function (zips you across the map).
Zippers are a type of elevator patched in 1.11 which worked similar to this but without the minecart tracks, just used the player

Have you tried doing this using an observer block? It might be considerably faster.
Texus Noe they have a 1 second delay so it would be slower and I know this is a late reply

@@alexanderficken9354 You usually use redstone ticks when you are doing redstone, game ticks are only for tehnical stuff (in general)
@@h-0058 There is no such thing as a "redstone tick", It's made up by the community
Was trying to make a sort of one-way rail system but was facing north so it screwed up with the first method. Then found this video which pretty much fixed it, Great video would recommend *thumbs up*

Mango has a design for a helper that will do the rails for you (straight and diagonal) He even has a piston helper for straight piston bolts.

Diagonal piston bolt doesn't work the same way.
You have to go fancy and have a block in front of the piston for it to work.

To solve the diagonal to straight bolt, Can't u just use like a observer looking into string than have a a delay using repeaters to power it separately
i dont get i when i want to build the 90° angel it only works when i conect the piston from the buttom but from the side it doesnt do anything
The diagonal ones aren't working for me. The minecart goes one block and gets stuck on the second rail. Any fix?
Tinker with timings I suppose
Beast turns out you can't push the minecart two pistons at a time, you have to push them one at a time
This video was made long ago and i'm sure plenty of changes have broken parts of this. I'd release an update video, but elytras made them obsolete.
@@xMistaBeastxGames move the pistons one back and use solid blocks on sticky pistons works fine on my 1.14.4 server i used one that is about 500k blocks long lol

If u make a mistake when putting the rails (and obviously u would have to do the whole thing), is there a way to fix it without having to do it ALL again?
yes you would have to redo the rails... be careful!
i made a diagonal piston bolt like the larger one you show in this video, but im randomly dropping behind the pistons at different points along the track on my server. is that lag on the client side?
It could be 1.13 being buggy. Even then try tinkering with timings (add a redstone tick to a repeater on the side you're getting stuck on etc)
i believe the issue is caused by spigot

It kind of works on bedrock if you hit the button once it goes like 5 blocks but then if you hit it again it works
I’m braking the rails first and then the red stone blocks and then they end up going straight

the diagonal piston bolt doesn't work in later versions but the one with full blocks works in 1.20+

Hi, I am currently building one straight piston bolt for 2000ish blocks. However it's considerably slower when compared with rockets+elytra. Is it normal or am I doing something wrong? Thank you!
They are about 10m/s slower than Elytra
Piston bolts are like high speed trains and elytra is like airliners. Elytra is significantly faster but piston bolt is more efficient as there is no cost per use (fireworks) and they aren't exactly slow

Is there a way to build a piston bult to go up very quickly?
You can't pass the redstone signal faster than 1 tick / piston, otherwise the minecart will get stuck
You can't do it with rails but you can make an old school piston elevator and put a minecart in it

I tryed it on 1.18 and it doesn't work for me (maybe I did it wrong ) the only way I found is to power up the piston many times with a quick clock
for diagonal, you need sticky pistons and blocks. straight works as shown. tested it today.

Faster than a powered rail and slower than a boat on ice. To my defense, though, the boat on ice thing wasn't a thing when this video was made.
Blue ice boat is faster, bur you have to keep the key pressed, with a piston bolt, you can afk.

How long would it take, set up on the nether roof starting at (0, 0) to go to a Nether portal that links to the overworld world border?
Let's see... 30000000÷8÷20 should give me the number of seconds in a lag free environment.
30000000÷8=3750000
3750000÷20=187500 seconds
187500÷60=3125 minutes
3125÷60=52.08333 hours.

So if diagonal piston bolts are faster, then, for going in straight directions, would a piston bolt that is diagonal and goes in a tight zigzag be faster than a strictly straight piston bolt?
I think going straight would work out to be the same. Try it out!
I think a zig zag would be slower, as while going diagonally you're only gaining like 0.7x efficiency, whereas you're moving 2x as many blocks, meaning it's actually 1.3x less efficient to zig-zag (supposedly, I haven't tested this)
It's an easy setup. Just make a piston bolt go like 40 blocks straight, then another one made out of diagonal traveling say 20 to the right then 20 to the left so both bolts have a similar endpoint, then have them trigger a command block and see what's what

am i the only one having the problem for 90° turns where the first piston of the second bolt blocks the mine cart from completely going into the non railed block, causing it to stop and the turn?
Updates have kinda changed things. Might wanna mess with the timings.
Beast one thing i thought of was to pull the piston out of the way and then push it back once the cart was in place but i cant find a viable way to do that that doesnt affect the speed too much, is that something that would work?

If you're willing to cheat, you can give yourself a debug stick and use it to adjust the shape of the rails

currently in 1.14.3 and it doesn't work for me, too. They probably patched something with it.

Diagonal piston bolts are as fast as straight piston bolts in 1 axis, they just travel in 2. Basically you can get from 0 0 to 100 50 in the same time as you could get to 100 0 in

Beast idk why but it worked when I used sticky pistons and a block but not just regular pistons for the diagonal piston bolt. Also the minecart always stop a couple tracks before the end of the piston bolt is there any way to fix this?
