  • This video demonstrates how to configure the cross band repeater function in the Icom 2730 mobile transceiver.
    This feature will not be available in the radio's menu unless you activate it, as indicated in the video.
    For some reason (an unintentional omission, probably,) the cross band repeater feature is not explained in the printed manual that is shipped with the radio. An addendum that explains this feature is available at:
    www.icomamerica.com/en/support...
    The addendum is somewhat vague. Hopefully, this video will explain the procedure more clearly.

    I've only been using my 2730 for a short time, but I'm impressed. I upgraded from an iCom V8000 VHF only because of how well my old radio performed, and have found the receive sensitivity on this rig to be equal or better. My 2 gripes about the 2730 (and admittedly I may not have found the settings to control this) 1 - The button chirp seems to be sent through both volume controls, so pressing a key on the radio is extremely loud if both volumes are turned up. 2 - The HM-133 mic on my V8000 had far more functions assigned to the keys - most notably scan - I could just press the 2 key when not in a mode requiring DTMF or numeric input to the radio and it would activate the memory scan. On the 2730 I have to hold the scan key on the appropriate bank of the control head then press it again to start the scan bank. All in all, still an excellent radio - W5SSJ

    I have a new IC-2730A radio set that I bought several years ago and never installed anywhere. I only powered it up to program all my frequencies into it, to duplicate what I have in my older IC-2720H radios. Then it went back into its box, and has been stored in the closet until just now. I tried the button press action at power-up, per your video, and NOTHING happens any differently than when I just power up the radio normally. I'm not sure, but I think the radio may have already been previously enabled for the crossband repeat mode, as I DO get the "RPT M" displayed on the front panel, when progressing through the various EXMENU -- OTHER menu screens. I don't remember having done it myself, as I didn't even know about the crossband repeat function when I bought the radio, but I might have enabled it myself. It has been too long. PROBLEM: When I have the "RPT M -- START" displayed on the front panel, and press the "MW" button to try to get it to the next menu item/option, nothing happens. The screen still just sits there and shows the same display: "RPT M -- START". I can't get the menu to change to the next function, to actually START the crossband repeat mode. HELP! Any ideas?

    The radio has several power settings, is it possible to set one of the powers to a lower one, e.g. 0 5Wat / 1Wat, etc., the minimum is probably 5W
    Is the reception of all frequencies good: 118.000MhzMhz / 150.000Mhz / 446.000Mhz is good Regards.

    Thanks for posting, I just passed my technicians exam two days ago. Anxiously waiting for my callsign and for it to be added to the FCC database. How long can your battery last with the truck off and this running as a repeater?

    • @jroysdon
      @jroysdon Před 5 lety

      Depends on how often the radio is transmitting. It is a simple enough math equation to solve for how long the radio can be sitting idle and another for how long if it is transmitting 100% and then add the battery of your vehicle - or in this case I'd recommend bringing a spare battery to run the radio unattended as you wouldn't want to come back to your vehicle and have a dead battery so you can't start it or use the radio.

    • @ZaxFrank
      @ZaxFrank  Před 5 lety +1

      As Jason R. said, it all depends on how much you are transmitting. According to Icom the radio draws 1.2 amps in when it's in standby, and 1.8A when it is receiving. However, the current draw increases to 13 amps when the radio is transmitting.
      The 2730 needs a minimum of 11.8 volts (approx.) to operate. Since the voltage output drops as the battery discharges, the radio will shut down before the battery completely dies. A healthy, fully charged 12V battery has a voltage of 12.7 volts. You can therefore only drain about 7% of the battery's capacity before the voltage drops below 11.8V. Example: a 100 Amp hour battery, drained to 93% gives you about 7 AH hours of "usable" capacity. You could therefore leave the radio in standby for about 5.4 hours, receive transmissions for about 3.75 hours, or transmit for about 30 minutes before the battery drops below 11.8V, causing the radio to power down.

    I’m new to ham. And new to this radio. Won’t the car need to be on to keep it draining your battery especially if your on a long net? This is a cool thing though.

    • @ZaxFrank
      @ZaxFrank  Před 3 lety

      You are correct, the transceiver runs off the car battery, and will drain your battery over time. It draws about 10 amps during transmission, at full transmission power (around 120-130 watts, depending on battery voltage.) A typical car battery is 70 amp hours, and generally should not be discharged beyond 50% capacity. That gives you around 2+ hours of continuous transmission before you would need to stop, in order to ensure that the battery has enough juice to start you car. Keep in mind that the current draw is much lower during reception, and while the transceiver is at idle (1-2 amps, roughly.) If you were only planning to transmit in case of an emergency, your car battery might be able to power the transceiver for several hours, if you did not transmit.
      The safest thing to do would be to run the transceiver off of a separate deep cycle battery (also know as a marine battery), since these can be completely discharged without damage. You can pick up a marine battery for a little over $100. It would not be all that difficult to install a switch that will swap the power from the vehicle battery to the marine battery, if you wanted to use the transceiver for an extended prior of time while the vehicle is off.
      Lastly, you could leave your vehicle running, thus allowing the alternator to power the transceiver. That's not very practical if you are going to be away from your vehicle for an extended period of time, however.

      from the repeater owner.
      This rule insures the system will not be compromised by connections we have no way to control. Such connections can cause massive interference, even though it seems it is working good.

    • @Airwuf
      @Airwuf Před 4 lety

      I have to admit..i dont see how a massive interference event would occur if the ht ptt used 70cm to trigger 2m transmit. My logic would tell me it would be exactly like being physically at the crossbanded radio transmitting with the handset! ??

    • @ZaxFrank

      I only use it for personal use, and only for short periods of time. A reviewer on eHam (www.eham.net/reviews/detail/12180) said he had some success using it as a node radio for an Echolink server at 20 watts, though he added some extra cooling. You may experience overheating if you use it at a higher power in a vehicle, particularly if you don't have very good airflow and/or an extra fan in your vehicle.
      I would only use the cross-band repeater function for no more than a few users, and for brief periods of time.
