  • When a subscriber of my Channel, who lives in Cornwall, got in touch and asked if I wanted to buy his 1990 Ford Granada Mk3… well, I had to say ‘yes’!
In this video I take you along on collection day, where we see and drive the Granada for the first time. Also, I feature everything I have found with the car, including a secret from its past, and talk you through the history of the Ford Granada (or Scorpio, if watching from outside of the UK & Ireland).
I do hope you enjoy this feature on Ford’s large, luxury, executive car.
If you enjoy the video then please subscribe, as it really helps the Channel, plus you get notified on all future videos, and there’s lots to come! Also, don’ forget to hit that ‘Like’ button and do leave me a comment sharing your thoughts or personal history with a Granada, feedback on the video or any of my cars - I do try to respond to everyone who gets in touch.
FINALLY… if you are a retro car / Ford enthusiast and fancy owning the Granada then get in touch via the comments. I love the car and will keep it, but if there is an enthusiast out there who would drive and enjoy it, then who am I to hold on to it? Open to an offer on the car or a swap (for something interesting).
    Thanks for watching!

Back in the 90’s my old boss Ken had a gold Granada Ghia X. He used to leave it for me to use when he went on holiday so I could run errands at work if required. I felt like I’d won the lottery parking it on my drive for a few weeks. Fond memories of a great workplace and a good boss. Cheers Ken 👍

I used my Dad's MK3 1989 Ford Granada 2.9i Ghia Automatic in Gold for a whole year back in 2004 to commute 70 miles round trip a day along the main A55 Expressway from Abergele to Caernarfon. The car drove and performed beautifully. The first car I ever drove was my Dad's MK1 1974 Ford Granada 3.0 Ghia Coupe Automatic in White with a Black Vinyl Roof around Asda Car Park in Llandudno when I was 15 years old. A few years later I also used my Dad's MK2 1980 Ford Granada 2.8 Ghia Automatic in Red for 6 months. My Dad is a huge Ford Granada and Jaguar XJ6 man. He owned many Granada's including a MK2 Sapphire. My neighbour also let me drive his 1996 Ford Scorpio 2.3 Ghia a few years ago. So I have driven all four generations of the Granada/Scorpio which is a very underrated car and I think has now actually come of age looks wise. My favourite Granada is the MK2. But all of them are gorgeous cars to drive and have great presence on the road.

I keep randomly coming across your videos. You seem to be getting the cars from my childhood.
The Granada you have is a 1990 MY facelift version that combined the new saloon with the hatch and they got a new matching front grill that included the Ford badge unlike the 85-89 cars.
I remember with the radios if you look the top cover off and lightly scratched the large micro chip it would turn the radio on without the need for the code.
Along with various Sierra’s my dad also had a decent mix of Granada’s as taxis. They varied from LX to Ghia X and also had several Granada Scorpio’s from pre facelift J plate to facelift L plates.
Some of the Scorpio’s had electric reclining rear seats and Ford telephones.
For a short time he also had a ex police 24v K plate Scorpio but due to the cost of fuel etc at the time it was swapped back for a twin cam auto.
The only other car you need to get to complete my childhood cars is a white Mk5 Cortina Ghia 😂

Another lovely, classic Ford. Great to see this survivor. I had the same engine in my Sapphire. The auto box definitely stifles it. The 5 speed manual was so much fun. Great, usable low down torque. I replaced it with a Mondeo 2.0 Si a few years later and, although it had more power, it wasn't anywhere near as much fun. I gave the Sapphire to my brother-in-law. Driving back from football practice one night, I thought I was travelling rather swiftly shall we say...until he flew past me in my old Sapphy! :) A great car, sadly missed.

When I was a child (I was born in 1993) my dad used to have a 1990 Scorpio GL (seems to be same trim level as Ghia X in the UK) just like this from new, with the same engine, gearbox, colour combo and all, albeit with less optional extras. It was our family’s car until 2002, when dad upgraded into an S80 Volvo. It was an absolutely lovely car. I’ve had a couple Scorpios over the years, but on both occasions they have been too far gone to have any sense in repairing/restoring them to a standard that would please me. As you said, they are not very valuable, so the most sensible thing would be to find a good one to start with, but rare they sure are. Even though I’m constantly searching the whole europe for a dark blue GL (or a Ghia) sedan like this (obviously in LHD), and have been basically for quite a while (more or less actively over 10 years), they just don’t seem to exist anymore. Once or twice I’ve seen one for sale in Germany, but then I’ve been in a situation that I haven’t have the money or the time to go and buy one. I was glad to see this video, all the sounds feel so nostalgic and familiar.

An extremely rare car now - even more so as saloon which only arrived in 1990 - and barely lasted 12 months in this spec before the whole range had the full facelift for the 1992 model year. A lovely survivor car that certainly deserves some extra tlc 👍👍

I love Granadas, from the MK1 to the MK3, especially the MK2 2.8i Ghia X and the MK3 Scorpio Cosworth. It's just a shame it was never available with a manual 'box. The Consul GT from the Sweeney was pretty cool too. Many years ago I had the chance to buy a 3.0 MK1 Coupé for £50!! My neighbour at the time bought it to restore, but never got around to it. Then he decided he wanted a Dolomite Sprint', so needed the space. Then for some unfathomable reason he just went ahead and scrapped the Granada on the day I was going to go and buy it, once I'd finished work. I was so pissed off, not to mention disappointed. Apparently he didn't get the message that I wanted it. They were hard enough to find back then. I can't imagine how rare they must be now.

Hope you get to do some more Rover content too, particularly any of those with the Honda connection/engines (which I think were the company's high point)... R8 216/416, 827, that sort of thing!
Also, I remember Dad brought a few company cars home back in the day. I recall once a Sierra 2.0 GLSi which his boss had at that time, and he took me out in it to a meeting he was going to. It had the then new 2.0 twin cam that this Granada has. Remember it being reasonably "lusty". Not particularly refined though. I used to read all the mags back in the day, What Car? with all their group tests etc and all these cars were commonplace and familiar back then! I would have been about 11 or 12 years old at the time I expect.

I bet the Wheel Wobble is due to slightly warped front Brake Discs. This was a extremely common thing on Granada's of this era.
Basically they used the brakes from the 1.8 & 2.0L Sierra. & yes, the Granada is a bit heavier, so the discs would need replacing more often than most other cars.
I'm not saying they wore out really fast, but they lasted about 20-25% less than most did. It was possible to upgrade the brakes of course by putting the brakes from a 2.8i on them.

Brilliant these cars don’t get anywhere near enough attention!
I grew up with Granada’s, my Dad had 4 mk2’s including one of the last 1985 stunning 2.8i Ghia X in 2 tone Nimbus Grey over Strato silver with red pin stripe & TRX wheels 😍
Passing my test at 17 in 1992 dad had his first company car, a 1991 Hreg mk3 2.9i 12v Scorpio saloon again in 2tone Navy blue over strato silver at the time which was insured for any family member to drive & it came with a company fuel card 😃 Needless to say my first first 6 months of driving was fun until I got my own car. If I had the room & no family commitments I’d buy this from you in a heartbeat & funnily enough dad’s had exactly the same stereo as your car but also had a 6 disc changer in the boot 🤷‍♂️
Great memories & thanks for doing the video!

The Ghia X had a sad ending unfortunately when just as it was supposed to be passed to me my ex brother in law wrote it off in an accident in 1995! Heart breaking for me & dad 😩🥲 I definitely would still have it today if it wasn’t for that.
A Breg 2.8 Ghia was stolen after 8 months (resulting in insurance supplying the Ghia X) & his 1981 preface lift 2.3GL was passed on to my grandfather who drove it all the way until 1998 when he stopped driving but ultimately it was found to be to far gone with tin worm & sadly scrapped.

I was contacted by a subscriber of the Channel from Ireland who bought the Granada and sends me regular updates on the progress he is making... he is doing a great job with it. As for values, outside of the Cosworth models, prices can vary quite considerably from £2K up to £6K (and more) but whether cars are selling at the higher end is unknown. I tend to go for the right car and work with the seller to get to the right price... enthusiasts such as yourself know what you are willing to pay and private sellers are usually keen to know their car is going to a good home.

I currently have a 1990 (H reg) Fiesta 1.4 Ghia with 40,000 miles and 2 lady owners from new tucked away in my garage and it would be nice to own 2 similarly aged, equivalent mileage Fords from each end of the price spectrum. I'm only in Plymouth and was born and bred in Saltash so I'm sure visiting rights could be arranged. The CD player would also be of far greater value in your Sierra assuming you can get it repaired.
