  • In 2016 alone, we generated enough rubbish in Singapore to fill 15,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. That calls for ambitious plans to manage it all - and put it to greener use.

    I'm amazed the way the island republic manage its waste especially the e-waste. Recycling is one way to sustain the supply of materials. Good job!

    I can see the attraction of biogas & it uses but surely the first port of call for food waste should be composting for return to the soil to grow more food given that Singapore imports such a large quantity of its food; a way to make a virtuous circle of Singapore's food production cycle.

    I must say that Singapore handles their garbage a lot better than the US does. Just look at how garbage is handled in the US. It’s utterly pathetic. No wonder we see so much litter everywhere and nobody wants to pick it up.

    I never knew that other countries just burn their garbage in incinerators instead of landfill - is this bad for CO2 emissions. But it makes sense because of Singapore's lack of land. Now with China not importing any recycling countries are forced to build recycling industries in their own country which should be good in the long run for the environment I hope.

      Better than Methane that the landfills give off plus the energy can be used.

    Unfortunately, there are still residents in my hdb block (east side) still throwing recyclables into the green bin, instead of blue bin and some just put cupboards on the floor beside the blue bin. Worse part is one day, I coincidentally found out that when the cleaner clean them up, he just throw in the green bin, instead of blue bin. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 100% sure that it’s not the cupboard cannot for in leh... ☹️
    I think the recycle staff also like this, they didn’t bother to pick up the cupboard when they are clearing the blue bin......

    Wait so food can be used as fuel? Does that mean it will burn and will release greenhouse gases?

    • @ghostedragon964
      @ghostedragon964 Před 5 lety +6

      No, burn the greenhouse gasses and the food waste gets "treated"

    • @Unteroffizier
      @Unteroffizier Před 4 lety +4

      It is a close loop. Gas releases are used to power the plant or treat other waste. Singapore regulates whatever waste gases that is discharge for industries, including waste incinerating and treatment plants. Otherwise we have to use gasification methods where no oxygen is involved so no CO2 or harmful oxides.

    • @Unteroffizier
      @Unteroffizier Před 4 lety +1

      Life here is fast paced and pressure. Most will not even have time to recycle. You go to work and bought plastic bottled beverages or canned soft drinks for breakfast or lunch or dinner. Will you hold on to it until you can find a recycling bin to throw away the rubbish? That is why from the place you work, on your way home and at home you need to have bins and collection points readily available so that people can leave the waste containers there. Even if you have the facilities available, education and changing people's mindset and habit and way of life is another factor to look into. The latter however, takes time, and maybe even generations before it can happen.
