    I have many good childhood memories of Almargem. Back in the early 2000s, this was one of the most popular water parks in the northern region of Portugal. Back then almargem was composed of the 3 orange water slides that you can see at 9:51, a small pool for children (5:54), and the river (3:57) ofc. In the river, we used to sail it using small pedal boats (we call them "Gaivotas", "Seagulls" in English). I enjoyed many good summer afternoons with my family there. Then, in 2008 a new big project started to be developed at Almargem (the new water slides at 2:48), and it never opened again. I don't know if the project's loss of funds is due to the big financial crisis that plagued europe between 2008-2010.

    21:25 I spent some 5 months in a hospital back in the early 80s and all the operating theatres at that hospital, and many of the wards had smooth transitions between the walls and the roof and floor. Prior to one of the many operations I had at the time, I asked one of the nurses why they were like that. She said, "It makes the theatre easier to clean and keep sterile. Sometimes a patient will have a nicked or burst artery and the blood can spray the walls and ceiling. Edges and corners can trap that blood and breed bacteria." For context, the hospital wing with the operating theatres was constructed in the 1970s.

You're very intentional/respectful when you're exploring a building and it's easy to take a minute and build our own ideas of what the buildings might have been like while they were still being used as opposed to having every second of the video be someone yelling or gasping because of something stupid.

    The idea of having rounded corner on walls and ceilings, sometimes even against the floor is a practice still in use today. Since a 90 degree corner is harder to clean than a nice smooth radius.
    The practice is most common in cleanrooms. Though, sometimes the "curved" corner is just a chamfered edge forming two 45 degree corners about an inch or two apart.

  • @JonasClark
    @JonasClark Před 2 lety +7

    I really wanted one of you to go all the way through one of the big slides, but I cannot blame you for not doing so! Yes, that's a 1930s or 1940s x-ray machine, with a lead-glass cone for collimating (shaping) the beam. Flared collimators were used for medical imaging, with cylinders and pointed cones for dental work. That table is built only for radiography; tables for fluoroscopy allowed the x-ray head to be moved under the table so the fluorescent screen would be on top. The tall, narrow cabinet in the backgroubnd at 16:32 would have contained the power transformer. The two extensions off the back of the cylinder (which probably still contains an x-ray tube) were where the thick power cables entered. That wall plate was for some sort of elevator, not to control the x-ray machine.
    The "Orthoskop" is JUST a fluoroscope, from the 1930s or 40s too. Yes, a Nazi-era x-ray machine! They could put a film cartridge in, but that was mainly made for live pictures. When the screen turns yellow, the phosphor has gone bad. They're supposed to be white, and they glow a sinister neon green. The tube head moves up and down when the screen is moved, using chains and counterweights. There's lead glass in front of the screen so the operator isn't getting a faceful of radiation, but later, wide lead shielding was added around the handle(s) flanking the screen; still later, they put on lead shields which stuck up 1' or so above the screen and long, leaded flaps cut into strips which hung below, to protect the operator further! I think these are scary devices, being that there was a drastically higher exposure the patent AND operator could get.

    I watch too much paranormal crap, so I’d be terrified (but also intrigued) to explore a sanatorium. Huge fan. Keep up the great videos and stay safe guys 👍🏻🤙🏻

    Another awesome video. It’s so sad to see places like the water park just abandoned when it had such potential. Would’ve been a great place. The sanatorium was neat, loved the elevator I thought was so cool. Thanks guys for another great explore!

    I recently started binge watching your videos while I'm working and they are so relaxing in a weird way. I also like how you respect the areas you go to and don't take anything with you or destroy property.

    I want to commend you guys on your videos. I love that you show, when available, new footage of the location or any other clips plus seeing the architecture of the time the buildings were built transports you to that time. I was thinking about this and seeing places,especially like the water park in this video, brings a bit of sadness. What I mean is someone had this big idea and now it just sits dead, not to get morbid, but the corpses of what was and what could have been. Kudos guys, really love the videos. Be safe out there.

    That Sanitarium was the scariest place you've hit. I hope it's been closed for a long time because that floor was scary. More than once soon after you went in, I felt like that didn't look steady anymore.

    Guys, many sanitoriums are in the mountains. It's actually the case as often as not.
    Portugal is full of half-finished golf courses, hotels and what not. So many projects left to crumble because the funding ran out ...

    Thanks for all of your content, I've been working on a 'reform school' near my home. I've done a 1960's era similar style exploration but that was as a youth without cameras and equipped with a skateboard, a couple old mills with similar gear, the buildings have since been gutted. Thanks for the inspiration and retreat to my roots, I will link you to my photos when I compile them.
