Genstone Installation Review | DIY Faux Stone

- During these quarantine days, I have been doing lots of home improvement projects including a Genstone installation of faux stone siding on the front of the house. The sun shines directly on the lower half of the house, which caused some chipped paint to start (you will see in the video) so I began researching solutions and came across their product. I would highly recommend that you order directly from the company and not the big box hardware stores because you will get a better idea of when your materials will arrive. This is important especially during the state of shipping right now. The faux stone project was completed in one day and all I needed were the following tools below. I enjoyed this project because it was quick, easy, and I could be creative with my decor for fall and Thanksgiving. If you have any questions about the project, leave them in the comments below. Good luck on your project if you are considering Genstone for your next home project. LIKE and Subscribe! Be safe and many blessings to you.
Tools I used for this project:

Great job, it turned out beautifully. Also, thank you for proudly displaying the U.S. flag-both in your window and in front of your house! 🇺🇸🇺🇸
I’m an Army veteran. I’m proud to have served.
@@SelenaThinkingOutLoudyou shouldn't be. It's pretty gross to defend a country as backwards as ours.
@@SelenaThinkingOutLoud Thank you for serving!
Thank you for your service! And please ignore the ignorant libturd comments. They wouldn’t last a day anywhere else in the world with that attitude.
Awesome indeed! Totally newbie for DIY bcuz the way you used your saw in cutting smaller part...but end results that's all it matters...kudos to 'ya..
Thanks for sharing!! Wonderful job!!
Thank you!
Your job is far better than most contractor's work I've seen. I'm so impressed!
Thank you, Mary, for the compliment! I enjoyed doing this project.
That looks awesome! I’m so glad I came across your video. Many blessings
Well done. Cool to see people tackle projects without fear!
Wow, you did a great job! Rock on for tackling that job.
You did an amazing job! I am very tempted to start this project on my own home. Thanks for posting.
Wow! You have inspired my wife and I to tackle the siding on our new home on our own! You are amazing!
Go Teamwork!
@@SelenaThinkingOutLouddo they have this in brick I like to do my chiminey
@@johnscimeca899 I do believe they do have it in faux brick. I would check with Genstone to see all that they carry though and also find out if they recommend it for a chimney. Good luck!
@@SelenaThinkingOutLoud thank you
@@johnscimeca899 you’re welcome!

Great job !!! It looks amazing. I was undecided about buying the GenStone columns, but now I am sold !!! Thanks for sharing. God Bless
Glad it was helpful! It's still looking great too so you should be fine with your project.
Great Job! Beautiful!!
Nice work! The Genstone truly is an upgrade to your home's curb appeal.
Thank you! I totally agree. During the holidays, it adds so much more character to the decor as well. It was definitely a good decision to go for it and do it.
Absolutely luv it. Great job 👍👍👍.
Looks great! Glad I found this vid!
Great job, my panels just arrived and I will be tackling this project with the help of a friend. I have to frame a wall to attach the panels to, the addition to my home sits about 4 feet off the ground. So Excited! Again it looks amazing.
You can do it!
Good job Selena!
It turned out great and looks fantastic. Thank you for the inspirational video :)
Great job! Now you have my wheels turning.
Thanks for sharing your project, informative and it looks great. Glad it is holding up well over the past 2 years. We are about to install GenStone on our back patio wall in the next few weeks.
Thank you for the video! Super helpful.
You are awesome! I'm going to do this on my foundation.

I’ve been looking for something like this for a while 🤗
Great job!!!! Wow, soon I will do around the fireplace and then the front of the house. Great video, thank you so much
The fireplace will look really classic with the Genstone added. You have a plan which is a good approach to DIY projects. You got this! All the best
This so beautiful

Thanks for watching, Mike!
Fantastic, explained really well. I am going to Home Depot to buy this now.
I think it’s only sold online, but I may be wrong.
Thanks for the nice simple DIY video. I was also looking at the Desert Sunrise color. Looks really nice.
You are so welcome!
Well done! Great job!

Wonderfully done
Thank you so much 😀

Great job !! Girl power 👏👏😁
Congratulations. Very well done. I have my project at the end of the month. Hope to get it as professional as you.
Good luck!
Great 👍🏾 job!!!!💯
Awesome job, Sis!❤🇺🇸
Looks good, great job. 👍
Thanks 👍
Looks great! And you did a wonderful job explaining your steps. Thank you for sharing
Love it great job
Thank you! All the best!
Great job!!!!
Thank you!
Looks great. I would notch the top cap rather than remove the tab just to keep it anchored well and as intended. It's tough to do with hand tools though.
you go girl!
Looks really good. Would have liked to see the whole house from a distance.
Very nice
It’s gorgeous. You should add matching product along the base of that front cement porch too near the ground. I think it would really be that finishing touch & pull it all together. It wouldn’t take very much. It looks gorgeous!! I’m doing this same thing to the front of my house next weekend!! I can’t wait !!!
Good luck on your project. I hope it turns out well, the way you like it.
Look great
Beautiful - I'm in the same job in Ghana
you did a great job..........
Thank you, Glen! It was all worth it.
that's a really excellent job you've done there (as if you didn't know it!) and doesn't it just lift the house up a level. excellent colour choice too. but what I'm really impressed with is I had a squizz at your channel and it's full of these rather feminine things that blokes tend to be embarrassed about so all the more to you for going ahead and doing a project like that. it's way too easy to think it's too hard or just not even think that and automatically assume it's a job you have to pay for someone to do everything, but you can stand back and know that you did that. bloody well done mate.
Thank you!
Man that is super nice, I have stucco exterior walls and I want to do this but I'm not sure if I have to remove all the stucco first.
You shouldn't have to remove the stucco, but I would recommend using the black water barrier paper and you should be fine with the screws, etc. If anything, chat with Genstone and see what they recommend.
LOVE seeing a female do it yourselfer. Excellent job !!!! Thinking of doing one wall in my bedroom just as a focal wall. Great video !!
You can do it! That's a great idea for an accent wall. I plan on redoing the kitchen backsplash with Genstone too. It's a durable product. The front of the house still looks like new so it's still working out nicely.
@@SelenaThinkingOutLoud Thank you for the follow up info on how it's holding up !
Looks awesome! You made it look so easy!!
Thank you! I like to take my time and I end up surprising myself too.
Thank you. I find this video to be very well made and helpful. A question I have is did you remove the siding first and adhere the panels to plywood or did you apply the craft paper and stone panels right over the siding? Also, did you drill into studs or just into the plywood? Thank you.
I placed the paper and stone directly over my siding and I did find the studs where possible the the PL Premium - Polyurethane Construction Adhesive keeps everything intact as additional support. I have no issues.
OMG! What a great video. So beautiful to! Can I do this to a railroad tie retaining wall? Will it hold up in upstate Albany New York? Thanks for sharing your great video.
I’m not sure, but I would recommend that you reach out to Genstone on Twitter or call the company about your project.
This is incredible. You are amazing. If I have overlap siding, do I have to remove that from my house first to ensure a flat surface?
The application does require a flat surface, from my experience using it, so I would say, “yes,” but if you contact Genstone directly, they may have other solutions for you.
Thank you for this video. What would you suggest to adhere the paper to stucco?
That’s a good question. I would suggest reaching out to Genstone for advice.
Great job, I see they have numbers on the corner so did 4 come in a box.
They came in multiple boxes because I ordered a number of them, but the numbers worked out so I could stagger them easily.
I’m going to try this on my screen porch first and go from there.
Yes, start small and see how you like it. That's the best way to go! Have fun and good luck.
It looks amazing I’m so shocked you could put it right over your siding and still get a good seal since your siding wasn’t flat. How did you do that?
The siding looked like it wasn't flat maybe on video, but it was flat enough to do the job. However, I used the black, waterproofing, paper I installed first in the video and that guaranteed a flat surface for me and extra protection if water did get through the Genstone.
looks good what size are panels and were did you buy them from
Each panel is 12 inches x 42 inches and I purchased mine from Genstone who sold them on Home Depot's website. However, I recommend just purchasing them directly from Genstone so you know exactly when they will arrive from their warehouse.
looks amazing! What color did you go with? I want to purchase but cant decide between them.
I chose Desert Sunrise to compliment the paint on the house.
Great Job. Did you remove the vinyl siding or did you just cover with the barrier
I just covered it with barrier and it’s holding up very well. No issues 😃
TOTALLY IMPRESSEDDDDDDD.....Looking to do my grocery store in Detroit and hotel I recently purchased for my son's youth group in Idlewild, MI. My genstone sales rep sent me your video and OMGGGGGGG....Shucks looks like I need to be hiring you, flying you out and paying for your lodging to be my contractor. You did an amazing job. So proud of you and totally impressed with the end results. Question, what was the pricing range. We're still trynna find the best color to match with my colors purple/yellow so we haven't gotten to pricing yet.
Thank you for the feedback. It still looks great and holding up very well. I completed this project about 2 years ago so the pricing is different now due to inflation, etc., but definitely worth it, so I can't speak on pricing unfortunately. Also, it really depends on the space you are trying to cover, which will establish your pricing. I wish you all the best on your projects.
Where do you get these...this seems cool and you did an amazing job!!
H~
You can get these from the company, Genstone. Take care.
Great job! I'm planning on doing my home this summer. How is it holding up? it's been two years hasn't it? 😉
My Genstone is still looking great, with no problems, and no adjustments, it's still the same as the day I installed it. It's so suitable for the front of the house since the sun shines on the front of the house a lot in the summer. Good luck with your project 😀
Looks awesome 👌where did you get them?
Genstone sells them on their website or you can buy their products through Home Depot.
WOW !!! Love love love your project. May I ask what the cost was? How is it holding up 2 years later?
The price of materials has gone up so much with everything, so there is a difference between what I paid then, and what you could expect to pay now, but measure your area to make sure you are only buying the amount of material you need. It is still holding up very well. Thank you 😀
Will that covering piece gemstone attract heat though. I'm wondering later behind it will the wood be ruined from the heat sweat buildup eventually
I put the black, waterproofing, paper down as an extra barrier of protection, shown first in the video, just in case, but the siding has been holding up nicely against the sun and heat.
Looks great - did you remove the siding where the faux stone goes or set it over it?
Thank you! No, I just put down the black paper and started to apply the Genstone.
Amazing job! It turned out great! How has it lasted since you installed it? I’m
Looking at adding this to my house. Thanks so much!
It’s still as gorgeous as the day I put it on the house. I’m very pleased. It did come with a 5yr warranty when I ordered mine so they believe in their product. It’s holding up very nicely to the hot sun on the front of the house.
@@SelenaThinkingOutLoud Thanks so much for the update! I’m going to be doing this to the back of my house. Very excited to get it, your installation video sure minute seems simple. So I look forward to giving it a try. Thank you so much!
@@NB-Philly You’re welcome, Nick! You’ll do great 👍🏽
What type of foundation did you have? I have I.C.F foundation and was wondering if the method you showed would work with the type of foundation
I’m not sure. I recommend calling Genstone to find out what they think.
Looks good. How are those faux stone holding up to the weather? Any fade or cracked? Would like to install those in the front of my house, our facing West so got sun most of the day. Thanks
The faux stone installation still looks very nice. They are holding up very well. The front of the house gets a lot of sun, which is why I wanted to go with this option too.
So you don’t remove the old vinyl siding prior to this installation?
My vinyl siding wasn’t old. The sun was just chipping the paint and I didn’t want to have to repaint every year. Or, I didn’t want the sun to damage my siding .
So one doesn't have to remove the old siding in order for the Gem Stone to adhere to the wall without air gaps? Just curious. It looks great!
On this house, I had a nice flat surface to work with so I didn’t need to remove any siding before applying the Genstone.
I noticed in a previous comment that you attached this directly over your siding. What kind of siding do you have? We have Hardi Plank, so I worry about drilling through my current siding! Yours looks awesome! Can't wait to do mine!
The siding on the house is wood siding and it was flat, placed next to each other so there is no bulging. I did put protective, water-protection, paper on my siding first and then it set up easy from there. (It's shown in the video, the particular brand I used) I recommend asking Genstone about your siding and getting their recommendation for application. Good Luck!
@@SelenaThinkingOutLoud I have stucco and even have a hard time using a drill! but Im going to give it a try ,. Yours looks great
Could have cut with a jig saw, but jobs done, great work - good 2 see a woman do it
Thanks for the tip!
Very nice. Is the vinyl siding still there? Also, would the screw damage the siding? Because i watched the whole video be you didn't say or show if you removed it.
Hello Shana, yes, I covered the siding with the black waterproofing paper. My siding did not have to be removed since it provided a smooth surface but I wanted more protection from any possible rain water. Overall, you need a smooth surface to apply Genstone and the galvanized screws are holding up great and nothing has harmed the siding. The Genstone is still going strong.
@@SelenaThinkingOutLoud thank you so much. Beautiful work
Great video how many panels came in a box?
The panels were purchased individually because it depends on the space you are attempting to cover so measure first and then you'll know how many panels to purchase. They put 6 or so per box because they are long.
How much was the total cost? Btw you did a great job! ❤️
The price for each panel is more than what I purchased them for before COVID-19. So, measure your area carefully to only purchase what you need to save some money. Thank you!
Did you have to caulk at t door and the sides of the window? Or is that enough. I have to do this also.
No, I didn't have to use caulk for this project, but if you have gaps it wouldn't hurt to fill those spaces in because I would've if I needed to. Good luck on your project!
Can you please tell me cost for one panel and what color is that
Hello Abe, I ordered my panels in Sept 2020 and they were $39.99 each. At that time the trim siding was $24.99 each. The color is Desert Sunrise. Keep in mind, the price may be a little higher now. I would purchase them directly from Genstone because I went through Home Depot and they just sent the purchase order directly to Genstone anyway. You will know better when your order will arrive with regards to shipping. Also, Genstone can help you best decide how many panels you need and the cost. They have a variety of colors and designs on their website and you get their warranty. Good Luck on your project :)
Do i place the black paper if its concrete house or just install it without it?
No, you wouldn’t need the paper for a concrete surface. I recommend looking at some of Genstone’s installation videos of contacting the company for advise for concrete applications. Good luck!
What color are your panels. My house is part red brick and I think this color would be perfect.
I used Desert Sunrise. I do believe they can send you samples so check into that if you want to make sure it will match your red brick.
Did you install the Genstone on top of the existing siding?
Yes, I did because the surface was smooth and in great shape. I just added the waterproof paper as an extra precaution, but the rain really doesn't hit the house, just the sun.
How many panels did it take you ? If you don't mind what was the total cost ?
I purchased 20 stone siding panels and 5 of the stone strips that go across the top. It was reasonably priced when I purchased them in 2020, but now they are most likely a little more so your price will depend on how many panels you need for the area you are working on, but for my project on the front of the house, my cost was under $1k
Great job!❤
