  • Embark on a journey through the life of Abel Tasman, the renowned explorer who left an indelible mark on our understanding of the world. In 1642, Tasman set off on his most significant expedition, aiming to discover the elusive "Great South Land." With two ships, he braved treacherous waters, charting unfamiliar coastlines and encountering unexplored territories.
On November 24, 1642, Tasman's eyes beheld a rugged coastline, which he named Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania). Continuing northward, he became the first European to lay eyes upon the breathtaking northwest coast of the South Island in New Zealand.
Despite his achievements, Tasman's legacy was not without controversy. The Dutch East India Company expressed disappointment over his failure to find lucrative trade routes. However, undeterred, Tasman led subsequent expeditions, aiming to establish navigable sea passages and document uncharted territories.
Tasman's expeditions exemplify the unwavering human spirit of exploration and the relentless quest to push boundaries. Join us on this voyage of discovery as we unravel the triumphs, controversies, and lasting impacts of his expeditions.

Check out the 3 ships of Tasman's second voyage at 4:50: the Limmen, Zeemeeuw, and Bracq. The Bracq looks like a 20th century vessel and it's a case of if you blink, you'll miss it. The pictures at times either don't match the commentary or are well ahead of the commentary. The idea of creating this video is good but its execution is sloppy. I presume the commentary was computer generated with AI as the voice has no idea how to pronounce Batavia. With a little more effort and diligence, this could be a quality educational video.

Australia didn't need to be "found". The local population had found it a long time before the White man explored it.
