I believe that Caitlin Clark and angel Reese is the wnba trying to recreate the bird vs magic boom that the nba had in the 80s with those two athletes. I hope for the wnba to be able to do that however that's a type of draw that they may not be able to get. Women sports as a whole are climbing a mountain when it comes to national appeal and money because the male sports have already had their bumps and bruises and failures at the beginning of the 1900s except for baseball which had some teams as late back as the late 1800s. That's a hard type of climb that I don't envy.
The WNBA is doing exactly what the NBA did in 1980 for the exact same reasons. Prior to the Bird/Magic rivalry, the NBA was close to going bust. Without the race card being played, what new fans were going to start paying attention? Caitlyn Clark is the “Great White Hype 2.0” and it’s a shame she didn’t go to the Big 3 and make serious cash.

If it were just the former, she wouldn't be getting this attention, and you know how I know? A'ja Wilson has been one of, if not the most dominant player in the league, and yet there's very little mainstream attention put on her. I feel like two things can be true at once here.
Here’s where I can take this step further. She can ball, she’s white, AND NOW she has the sports media attention which the WNBA has struggled to capture the media’s attention for a while now. All Angel Reese (or whomever comes up with her) has to do is create a rivalry that the American sports media can sink their teeth into and the WNBA will finally have the market they desperately need. It’s a win win situation.
