  • Eric Carnaby & Son has been a JCB customer since 1959 and over six decades, has bought more than 150 JCBs. It's one of our longest standing customers. To celebrate this relationship of more than 60 years and to celebrate the our own 75th anniversary, we're restoring the Carnaby family's cherished 1964 JCB 1 backhoe loader.
    This is the full story, featuring all three full-length episodes in one.
    The story begins when George Bamford - grandson of JCB Founder Joseph Cyril Bamford CBE - springs the restoration surprise on Roland Carnaby Sr. and Jr. during a visit to the Carnabys' premises. The project team then gets to work restoring the machine. This involved taking the full machine apart and sending component parts to the various JCB facilities so that they could be inspected, then either repaired or replaced. Later, the finished machine is handed back in its beautifully-restored form.

    Great "win - win" situation: the customer is happy with his restored JCB and JCB can educate young mechanics for their JCB factory. And this old machine is a perfect "learning object" for that.

    It's hugely rewarding to see a project like this being worked on by young lads and young girls. These engineering newcomers are the future of British manufacturing industry. As UK citizens, we should all be immensely proud of companies like JCB. They remind us that we are still the best at some things.

I would love to see companies have full restoration shops to keep more items going and pass the engineering skills on to the new generations. As a young mechanic I myself find that old technology is lost to the new generation including myself. I can diagnose a wiring harness but I don’t even know how to drive a stick shift.

    Lovely restoration on an early backhoe by some enthusiastic young talent, I first met Eric in the early 90's when I worked for Westfield shovels when it was owned by Dave and Ros Chapman and managing director son Steve Chapman, we used to load pyrite to lorries on what was the old pyrite dump at the back of IBT which is now part of ABP's HIT and biomass storage and rail loading facility at Immingham, I always found him an interesting gent with a lovely placid nature and forward outlook on life, I must admit I was a bit jealous as we were using Ford A62's and he was on one of his cat machines, which were designed to "dig at the face" the Ford's were a decent small machine but they were the bee's knees in the holds of bigger bulk cargo ships as they would turn tighter than any other machine and also the articulation of the bucket was far greater than any other, but going back to the JCB 1, what a fantastic way to see one of these machines restored and one of his dreams fulfilled, we'll done guys.

    • @51WCDodge
      @51WCDodge Před 4 lety +6

      Yes. Restored using original manufacteurer's parts and techniques with no major changes. It would qulify with DVLA as a Historic Vechicle. Though to the owners it could be , another one to go out and work and earn our wages, just as useful now as in 1963.

    • @killianmurphy8527
      @killianmurphy8527 Před 4 lety +2

      51WCDodge I meant when people restore vehicles like that they change parts and paint it which is not the original paint but Jcb did it so technically it’s original

    • @51WCDodge
      @51WCDodge Před 4 lety +1

      @@killianmurphy8527 The way the UK system works is if I have a vehicle for which I want claim any historic exemption, basically no tax or MOT. I rebuild the vehicle. The I get a recognised accesor, from one of the motorring associations or specialist groups to come an examine the vehicle. They will Score the vehicle on originality, is the engine original to the vehicle or one of the same type and power output the manufactuere used. Are the axles original. Is the body/chassis as was on the original specification. If it clicks up the magic number it is accepted as a Historic Vehicle. If major components have been changed and it fails the score, then you have a Modified Vehicle, so can't get a registration releveant to the vehicle or proof of age and have to pay tax and MOT as you would on a newer vehicle. Under certain circumstances the vehicle may need an engineers report or examination at a DVLA testing staion before it is leagl for road use.
