San Antonio Rose (fiddle lesson- melody and solo)

- San Antonio Rose is one of Bob Wills' most famous songs, and an essential part of any Western Swing repertoire. In this fiddle lesson, I first show a very simple version of the melody, with suggestions for drones and shuffles. I then demonstrate a version close to the Bob Wills original, with ornamentation and double stops. I show the original link to the key change.
Finally I have suggestions for some western swing fiddle licks typical of Johnny Gimble
For more information on western swing fiddle technique, see my videos "Western Swing fiddle-parts 1-3".
Many of the techniques in this video will be included in my forthcoming book "Exploring Country and Bluegrass Fiddle", due to be published by Schott in October 2021.

The only instructional video of this song that I could find that shows the change from D to Ab!. Thanks Chris
I'm nothing if not thorough!
You’ve outdone yourself once again, Chris. Loved your soloing ideas....enough to keep me going for many years to come. I appreciate anything Bob Wills that you’d do. Still the king!
Ah......the quintessential Bob Wills song, San Antonio Rose. Thank you so much Chris for doing this song, it’s my favorite Bob Wills song.
Thanks Robert!
I recently found your channel. I have been playing for over forty years and I still love it. I don’t play in public anymore because, the old joints ain’t what they used to be. My dad, Don Mason used to play guitar for Jimmy Wakely, and Hank Thompson. Subbed and watching.❤
Thanks Faron. Hope you find plenty to keep you ninspired!
@@TheFiddleChannel Thank you, Chris. From Ohio.
Great choice of tune Chris. I used to play this tune in A, but D (especially with the double stops), sounds much better. I'm also appreciative of that "Yodel Lick".
I've always liked and wondered how to play that. Thank you. 👍
Right on Chris!
Appreciate this so much, great job!
Thanks Kathy. Who doesn't love San Antonio Rose!
I always love your vids...been working on this one for a couple months...then tonight I tried it..everyone complained because they wanted to play it in G! haha They got over it!
Thanks Cindy!
Man you’re good! I’m watching intently , though I don’t fiddle around. I play guitar but have fooled with the fiddle some. Those intricate twirls and slides sound great
Hi Walter. That should be interesting!
@@TheFiddleChannel I love Bob Wills, being from Texas, but I need more chords knowledge
Great ideas, western swing is very similar to jazz as you pointed out.
Thanks Andy!
What a great job! Johnny G. was a friend of mine..we played some shows together in the 90's. I even had him sign one of my fiddles! Always enjoy your vids...great sawing!
Hi Charlie. Glad you enjoy my vids. You're a lucky man to have known Johnny Gimble!
Hello Chris, I have enjoyed it.
But do you have beginner lessons for the double stops?
Hi Frank. I'm afraid I don't have such a lesson. If I did one, what questions would you want answered, or difficulties explained?
Can you do a tutorial of “Mountain Music” by Alabama ? It has a very good fiddle part!
That's a great song! I'll take a look at it.
can i get the sheet music for your arrangement
Hi Charles. Yes. Send me an email to haighchris@hotmail.com
