  • It's not secret that Crash Bandicoot has had the spotlight over the past couple of years, and Spyro only had his time to shine in 2018. So, today we ask the question, Why is Crash Bandicoot More Popular Than Spyro the Dragon? Well, history seems to show a hint towards the answer.

I made a long post about it, but the short version is if Activision can't market Spyro to Japan, they could spread it via word of mouth. Give a copy to a select group of streamers or Vtubers to play it. The Vtuber scene is big over there so having one of them play Spyro could rouse some attention, much similar to what happened with games like Jump King or Vampire Survivor. I'm not a marketing expert, but it is one way to do it without spending so much on advertisements.

I think it has to do with the dilution of Spyro's brand. Regardless of the "quality" of Crash's post-Naughty Dog games, he still remained prominent in them. Spyro, on the other hand, went through multiple reboots until he was used to market Skylanders, which sidelined Spyro as the franchise went on.

I’ve beaten them so many times both on the original PS1 and then again in the Reignited Trilogy and they never get old to me. It’s such a shame how the franchise never got a proper treatment.

  • @FraserSouris
    @FraserSouris Před 2 lety +42

My guess prior to watching this video is that the gameplay of these games played a role.
Crash had a much more linear "get to the end of the level" approach whole Spyro had more of an open ended collecathon approach. This meant that Crash would also be more approachable for more people. You could pick up a Crash game and instantly get into it while Spyro needed a lot more setup. Typically the more approachable and accessible something is, the more likely its going to stick.
My second prediction was the marketing. If I recall correctly, Crash was both a launch title for the PS1 and marketed as the PS mascot from day 1. While Spyro launched a few years later and was pushed a lot less in comparison because Crash was already the established draw.
I guess these are the main reasons for the discrepancies?
Edit: eh, I was half correct

The big difference is that Spyro was doing what Mario did whereas Crash was always about maintaining the linear design of 2D and translating it to 3D. @A-Nationverse Před 2 lety +8

Here’s one of the reasons why Crash Bandicoot became so popular in the 90s:
    1. Crash Bandicoot did something a little different than other platformer games. Crash uses his spin attack to break crates and send enemies flying out of the level. Its platform is mechanics went to a 3D platformer game compared to Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog.
    2. Sony needed a mascot for PlayStation to compete with Nintendo’s Mario and Sega’s Sonic.
    3. Crash Bandicoot was a well established franchise. People really recognized Crash Bandicoot as a gaming character. They wanted Crash to appear in Smash Bros, but Crash didn’t made it in. If it weren’t for Crash Bandicoot, we would not have PlayStation today.
As for Spyro, it started as a 3D platformer on PlayStation. The first game had a demo included in Crash Bandicoot Warped and in one of the demo disc of the PS1. Both franchises when downhill after Sony finishes its deal with Universal Studios. Both Crash and Spyro came back as a remaster versions of the original classic games. No matter how popular Crash and Spyro is, always remember that Crash and Spyro here for all of us weather if it is a new game or not. We have mods that made modded levels of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon. There is a community of Crash and Spyro just like Pokémon. Crash and Spyro was released on the same year as Pokémon. The only difference is that Crash Bandicoot was released on the same year that Pokémon started in Japan and Spyro the Dragon was released on the same year as Pokémon releases on other countries such as the US, Canada, and Europe.

It's not like Spyro Reignited Trilogy was a complete failure. Activision's been seemingly ignoring the Spyro demand as if there's little of it
Don't also forget that Spyro and Crash are sibling franchises that have shared a close relationship since their beginnings on the original PlayStation. Interesting. It seems like Crash is to Spyro as Mario is to Sonic. Crash and Mario both stayed mostly consistent while Spyro and Sonic both got drastically altered multiple times and got treated significantly worse. I think what I love about Sonic specifically is the potential it *could* have realized had things gone better for it. I suppose you could say the same for Spyro, although to a somewhat lesser extent.
It's also kind of interesting how the primary color of the main character in each is only slightly different from the earlier generation counterparts I'm using for comparison, ie Mario = Red, Crash = Orange, while Sonic = Blue, Spyro = Purple; Yellow added to Red makes Orange, Red added to Blue makes Purple, which also even means equal rotationary direction along the color wheel for both changes).

I think the thing always holding Sonic back ironically was his speed. It's easy to pull off in 2d but more difficult in 3d which is probably why Mario ditched it for more explorable places. Sonic adventures tried doing a hub world but it was ruined on account of how fast sonic would move around.

    • @mikeexits
      @mikeexits Před 2 lety

@@siresorb1419 I think it's another bigger problem that the nature of Sonic games as we know them divided the fanbase a lot, resulting in a lot of backlash no matter what they tried (except less so for Sonic Mania, which was made by fans of course), and instead of fixing good ideas that weren't executed well, they have the devs try something different from everything before, hence why they never went back to the Adventure formula after 06 failed (due to no fault of the devs themselves; that game had a hellishly messy dev process). Creating a vicious cycle.
Sega could do better with Sonic even despite his speed making it harder to problem solve for these kinds of things, but they haven't done very well as of yet. I think Sonic Unleashed (on the more powerful PS3/360 consoles) did the best job implementing a hub world in Sonic games.

I don't how big of a thing this would be, but I believe it's also worth mentioning that Spyro's games are more complicated to be made on a technical point. I'm sick of waiting for Activision to say something, but I'm still confident in Spyro 4's existence because it wouldn't have been teased otherwise. Any leakers claiming that it doesn't or was cancelled are just theorizing like the rest of us or raining on our parade by pretending to have information.
There was also a fan organized Spyro [online] community day on June 4th that TFB & The Spyro Twitter account both acknowledged & the fact that merch companies are still creating merch that the Spyro Twitter was promoting. think the merch is still being made to keep hype at a low, but present level until we get some kind of announcement.
I believe that Spyro 4 has been in development in some form since March 2020 at the latest due to the dating of the Twitter leak I mentioned & the Crash 4 artbook tease.
I suspect that Spyro’s redesign in Crash On the Run is hinting at Spyro 4 otherwise why would King bother to redesign him for a mobile game as opposed to just using a lower resolution version of his Reignited model?

I still believe the March 2020 TheGamingRevolution Tweet [since deleted through an account suspension] that "a new Spyro game is in the works "and to "expect more info in the coming months" because I believe said leaker has a perfect [or at least very accurate] track record. The reason we don't have any info on the game 26 months later is because of the market chaos, delays & electronics shortages [especially the PS5 situation] caused by the pandemic that nobody could’ve predicted the specifics of.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if the Actvision-Blizzard lawsuits have delayed the game even further due to the company’s resources being redirected to deal with them.
Who knows how long the Microsoft buyout had been planned for prior to its announcement? It may've already been considered with regard to Wumpa League & Spyro 4, which could be a contributing factor as to why they haven’t been announced.
Spyro is a PS mascot, so he'd be more heavily affected by the PS5 situation; I wouldn't be surprised if whoever's making Spyro 4 has been forced to create a PS4/ previous gen version as well. That would explain why we haven’t seen the trailer yet.
I'm under the impression that the PS5 is more heavily affected then the other 2 consoles, which is why I mentioned it specifically. Just to clarify, I doubt TfB is making Spyro 4 & I didn't think they were in the 1st place; If they are, then It'll end up delayed even more due to the CoD fiasco. If I had to guess who's developing it, I'm guessing it's Beenox.
While I don't think TfB is the studio making Spyro 4, the art book tease & the fact that they acknowledged the Spyro community day leads me to believe that they have [or at least had] intel on it.
Canadian Guy Eh determined that the activity patten of the Spyro trademarks also closely resembles what was happening in the leadup to the release of Crash 4. Why would Activision waste money extending new Spyro trademarks If they weren’t going to use them?
I don't care if Spyro 4 comes later. I'll just be happy whenever the trailer drops. The longer until Spyro 4 releases, the longer it has been in development & the better it'll likely be because of that.
Spyro 4 is real and it's Cynder's ticket back into the main franchise! It would take a counterclaim from a verified Activison account to convince me otherwise!
Spyro 4 could also be more ambitious than we think & Wumpa League is being teased to buy it more dev time.
I haven't doubted Spyro 4's existence since we got that artbook tease. It'd only take a single Tweet for ActiBlizz to disconfirm it, but they haven't.

If Spyro 4 doesn't show up by 2023 for instance, all that would indicate is that it would be in development for at least 3 years at that point.
I'm confused as well. the devs know we want Spyro 4 & its existence 1st got leaked 26 months ago. Hopefully we're going to get 4-5 years worth of nonstop Spyro games like we did with Crash. Either that or they're going for quality over quantity. I.e something that makes Crash 4 look like ETD in terms of quality by comparison.
it's also possible that the long dev time of Spyro 4 is because it could be something so unexpected, ambitious & unbelievable [eg a BOTW style open world game and/or a TLOS remake/4th entry] that Activison doesn't want any info given away too early.
Stewart Copeland announced on Twitter that the Spyro Soundtrack release was delayed to May 4th for a reason he isn't telling us. It's real & the magnitude of the delay combined with the lack of clarification indicates he most likely knows something about Spyro 4. Time has shown that it wasn't an April fools prank, although it was daft to make the original soundtrack release date April 1st .

But even with that said, I loved Spyro for everything that it brought to the table upon release. For everything you explained in the video, each of there history is literally why I loved both franchises as much as I do. And how it defines my love for gaming in my youth. Crash had a richer history, and more games followed it’s influence. I like to think that’s why he was a stronger candidate to be in something like Smash Bros. i think another element is just how the games work.
Crash is about tight platforming challenges. Walk forwards, meet an obstacle - best the obstacle. At its core its constant heart pumping tests of skill. It follows in 2D marios footsteps.
Spyro is far more open ended. "go and find X. Good luck." Spyro begs you do just chill out and explore, calm down and pick your own challenges. Its like a proto open world game.
Of course, that isn't all the games do. They both have explorative elements, they both have heart pounding platforming challenges, they both change with their sequels - and they are both GOOD.
But whenever something is more immediately challenging, flashy and intense - it tends to stick in the brain more than something that wants you to give it methodical time.

I did notice that the marketing for Crash Bandicoot is leagues beyond what Spyro has had. It seems like marketing and game release windows were the two main factors that contributed to Spyro losing the popularity contest, despite the two mascots being hailed as rivals since their inception like Ratchet and Jak.
As someone that owns and played both games as a kid, I leaned more towards Spyro and still do to this day. Even though the Spyro Reignited Trilogy was released after the Crash N. Sane Trilogy, I got Spyro first. Spyro may be what got me into my gamer preferences for open-world free-roam games that have collectables hidden in any nook and cranny you can find. While the Crash games are also collectathons, the level structure is hella linear and doesn't give much room for exploration.
By the way, just being nitpicky, but remaster and remake are not the same thing and should not be used interchangeably. The N. Sane Trilogy and Reignited Trilogy are remakes.

When I was 8 I remember trying both Spyro: Year of the Dragon and and Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex and I only completed the Crash game while I remember being stuck at the start of Spyro. Why? No idea. Never played it again. Maybe it was because the game was in English but I understood only Polish back then, being born in Poland and all that.

ehh i finished spyro 3 100%, and i didn't understand english either at the time either (9 years old from Iceland) if i remember correctly the Pal version had a few languages, i don't know if Polish was one of them (definitely no icelandic lol)
you don't need much english knowledge for most if it i think, just know that you are supposed to find eggs and the challenges are pretty self explanatory,
this is something i worry about with the current games, if our youngsters can play the games without learning English first

as someone who grew up with the entire series of Crash as a child (by entire series, I mean literally the entire series up until MoM, I played all PS1, PS2, GBA and DS games) I actually love the original Spyro Trilogy more than the original Crash Trilogy. didn't play the rest of the series but I wish Spyro had more chance to shine like Crash. Crash's latter games were many and all of them were pretty solid (with exception to Boom Bang, and some of the DS/GBA versions of Titans and Mutants)

Crash and Spyro ironically have a lot of things in common. They defined the PS1 as a console, the people who originally developed them lost ownership, they were past over to various development teams including being part of the same development studio in the case of Traveler's Tales, they've crossed over numerous times, they got rebooted and rebranded several times, they went on hiatus for over half a decade, and they're currently shackled by Activision which is owned by Microsoft. Irony at it's peak.

I've always felt like Dragons in general are I guess harder to design a game for since when you really think about it, there aren't a lot of video games out there about dragons. Crash being a humanoid shaped character makes him generally easier to design levels for I guess. Probably why you don't see that many 4-legged protags In general honestly

Even as someone who has more of a connection with Crash for simply playing more of his games, I can’t help but feel bad for Spyro and his fans. It also didn’t help that after both franchises are no longer tied into being Sony exclusives, Crash simply found more success. Just look at Crash Twinsanity and Spyro Enter The Dragonfly. Both went through development hell and despite the issues from a technical level, Crash Twinsanity managed to please audience more.

To be fair, Spyro 3 releasing just 2-days before the PS2 was actually kind of a good thing. Because the PS2 was backwards compatible with every single PS1 game. Which, in of itself was really good considering the small number of PS2 titles at launch. And honestly, that's how I experienced Spyro 3.
Not to mention Spyro 3 got the Greatest Hits reprint, which also fixed a few issues with the initial release. So that's nice, it's just a shame Spyro didn't have a proper chance back then in other parts of the world. Thankfully that changed with Reignited!

Concerning Spyro's popularity in the modern market I think it's evened out with Crash a fair bit. The issue is that Activision refuses to so much as give Spyro a chance. With him being downgraded to a glorified background character, or having his own remaster undercut by the orange rat.

I wasn’t expecting that brazilian shoutout but it’s true. I bet that the reason is because piracy here was extremely common with the PS1 and even more with the PS2. You could literally get a game for like a dollar on the streets and they were even more common than official copies. Because of that pretty much everyone played these games.
