Not sure if there's a width limit for these bots, but Deep Six looked to be really tricky to control with those gyroscopic forces. A tall flywheel certainly gives a huge amount of power to the weapon, but the height works against it - something lower (but equally massive) and a wider wheel track might have made driving easier. Having said that... it won, so who the heck cares what I think! I know NOTHING about robot combat, and much prefer flower arranging and baking muffins and cuddling kittens and stamping my steel-shod jackboots on the upturned, tear-stained faces of the proletariat.
You are absolutely right that there are more practical ways of doing things, but some bots such as this are made with pure entertainment in mind, so a gigantic spinner is pretty awesome and fun.
Solid internals on Deep Six, keeping operating after sending itself bouncing into everything. I'm used to seeing Tombstone etc just explode when they do that.
