    Great build, and very much enjoyed your commentary. My only gripe with the kit is the Aztec decals themselves. The tiling and plating are printed in too dark a color register, especially when compared with the same tiling and plating effects used on the actual full size filming models.
    For scale, the Aztec plating should have been printed in much lighter gray and blue registers that produce a much more subtle effect when dry.
    Regardless, you've done an outstanding job with this build. Sharp salute, sir!

    Lovely build.
    Great info about the cost of the lighting parts.
    Yeah, no blinking lights is not a deal breaker. The fact that everything lights up in general is very cool.
    The blinking lights is like a frosting on a muffin that turns it into a cupcake. Both delicious and wonderful.
    Thank you for sharing.

    "By god, that's a big ship!" I'm so glad that we ended up with THIS Excelsior, given the various concepts trotted out during the making of The Search For Spock. I know we're simply speculating about the future form and function of humanity in deep space, but the iconic "Federation Starship" design, with a livable saucer section, a secondary/engineering section, and a pair of nacelles which create a warp bubble, is just so realistic (to me) and does a wonderful job of combining form plus function. I could easily see that design becoming a reality. Some of the Excelsior concepts were just too far/futuristic, and they lost that classic starship look. I remember seeing the reveal of the Excelsior in the theater as a kid (born in 76), and it was a gut punch to realize the Enterprise was no longer the crown jewel of Starfleet. Fabulous looking model, and you did a great job on every aspect!

    Really like the spot light effect, a very clever and effective way to do that without complex lighting but I always think the aztecing is far too prominent on small scale models, not your fault when using decals which are obviously far easier than paint, but the aztecing is a pretty subtle effect even at studio scale.

    Nice job; the aztec decals for this ship from R2 are the best I have ever worked with, and the upgrades to the kit itself are pretty good. I couldn't agree more about how you can light a ship for relatively little money, although I have gone completely OTT on one or two builds, yet some led strip and careful lightblocking go a long way for a little money. I used a slightly darker base colour - sort of light to mid grey - and it seemed to work well for this ship - the Aztec decals blended in more.

    Nice looking build!! The darker RCS thruster is just a goof. Oddly enough the darker one is the more correct color for them. The lighter blue decals are for the movie version of the ship, the darker blue is for the later DS9 version. Even though the aztec pattern is wrong it is nice that they give you so much in the decals.

    I know that the studio model is white, but looking at it in combination with those aztecing decals I just do not like the depth of the contrast they provide, it looks splotchy or like there is some kind of episode dependant metal disease in the hull, please understand this is not a critique on your work you did an awesome job on everything, but if I take this one up i think it needs a light gray over a pure white to make the decals fit better, or to leave the aztec decals off entirely, the strongbacks alone with the white get a lot of the effect of feeling like the excelsior in my opinion

    No offense intended but i really don't like the wallpaper decals. The Aztecing is supposed to be a Subtle thing these are way to harsh looking. I can agree with what you call the tiger stripes and the red pinstripes but the rest i think i will stick to masking and painting. That being said considering all you had were stickers for your drill guides your windows are very clean and straight. You're overall build is very clean and your minimalistic use of lighting to achieve maximum effect is quite good and i am very impressed.

    Really nice build. In some cases I find the Aztec decals to be a bit too harsh. I’ve heard of misting some base coat on top of the decals to tone them down. Have you tried this? Does this need to be done before or after applying the decals to the model? Thanks again for a great video.

    • @davidjames1389
      @davidjames1389 Před 3 lety +2

      I just tried this with my 1/1000 Refit and it definitely helped to tone down the aztecs. Then I just resealed it again before applying the kit decals.

    • @cwam1701e
      @cwam1701e Před 3 lety +2

      In my mind the movie era Enterprise is basically white, but the Excelsior is basically grey. So when I built mine I used light-mid grey as the base coat. That really tones down the aztec decals when they went on, the contrast is way less. If you can accept the darker colour then this is by far the safest way to go.
      You can tone down things by spraying after putting on the decals, but it is a risky business unless you are really good at spray painting. I tried it once; if you spray too little you get almost a speckle effect which looks poor (which is what happened when I tried it); OTOH, if you spray too much or, worst of all, spray unevenly and end up with some parts with a heavier coat than others, there is really nothing you can do about it - you can't sand it off or refinish it without ruining the decals.

    Heya!
    I’m Really Sorry to Suggest a Correction- the Blue Underbelly of the Excelsior that you refer to as the Strong Back is Actually the Vessels Sensor Pallets that are Huge if it were that Excelsior was a Real Ship? The Strong Backs are the Grey Panels on the top of the Vessels Secondary Hull Not Below? I’m Curious as to Where and the reason Why the Reference would Suggest the Strong Back is on the Belly of the Ship? Would it not be Called the Strong Belly otherwise ?
    Best

    • @cwam1701e
      @cwam1701e Před 3 lety

      On the Constitution refit the term "strong back" makes sense; that section of the hull has to hold the neck with the weight of the saucer, and the two pylons with the weight of the nacelles (although I am not sure that weight makes sense in space...). I know that building the model you have to take extra care to make sure the joints around that hull section are really strong. For the Excelsior, though, there really is no equivalent stress point; I suppose it is one of those things where the original usage made sense but then the term itself just becomes part of the language of Starship building and then gets applied in a very general way, sometimes not entirely making sense!

    • @eugenerusselnash
      @eugenerusselnash Před 3 lety

      @@cwam1701e Heya!
      If you Look at The Engineering Dynamic of the Excelsior the Same Terminology Can Be Applied Retrospectively as the Upper Secondary Hull Not Only Services the Same Function and Aesthetic as the Refit but Tapers Off in the Extreme to a Secondary Launch Bay. The Engineering Template is Essentially the Same. If Anything and by Some Miracle of Engineering the Excelsiors Strong Back Would Have to be More Robust than the Enterprises due to an Increased Tapered Flat, Wide, Surface Area and the Absence of the Refits Cylindrical Mass to Support the Pylons and Warp Nacelles. But Any Reference Guide from Classic Excelsior to Refit Enterprise-B Notation and Schematics, those Blue or and Turquoise Accents are the Vessels Sensor Pallets- for those Gaseous Anomalies I Guess? The Strong Back is Definitely along the Top Of the Secondary Hull. Also those Grey Panels Also Serve to Access the Interior of the Vessel.
