  • A short documentary about Luník IX, a neighbourhood in the city of Košice, Slovakia. Here is located the largest community of Romani people in Slovakia, and maybe in Europe. The Roma people in Lunik 9 is living in very precarious conditions, and are distinguished by a very high birth and death rates, and an very high unemployment. Some residents seem to get rid of their garbage by throwing it out from the balcony, and the condition of some of the buildings is very bad, and their stability is compromised.

gypsys are often discriminated in various european countries, however, it is also a fact that they refuse to integrate into society. They could get a job in a factory or as farm helpers, but most of them simply dont want to work and prefer government benefits being paid to them. They have a different mindset.

I used to have some Roma kids in class I taught in Poland. The girls would just skip school all the time. Once investigated, one of the mums said that they don't want their 13 and older girls going to school in fear of Roma men. According to them these children were in position to be forced into marriage through abduction and rape.

Only extraordinary people could not fall victim to this treatment. You can educate people all you like but if a society still vilifies them, it won’t do any good. Scott Lafferty, I completely agree. I've been living in Slovakia for 11 years and the problem is the same as it was when I arrived. Slovaks won't take any responsibility. It's far easier to demonize the weakest members of society. That seems to be true everywhere. The powerful majority can sit and feel superior while benefitting from the accrued wealth and privilege created by past generations. I can't imagine starting life in those conditions. You're right that even the most exceptional would struggle and likely fail

@@shapermechanist Perhaps I was speaking too broadly to say Slovaks won't help. A great many have helped and the Roma after all are Slovak as well. I made the mistake of overgeneralizing as an emotional reaction to a complex issue. It comes from a place of deep sympathy for their plight. I believe you are making an overgeneralization in saying that these immigrant groups do not cause mischief or commit crimes. They do and are ultimately sent home. I have seen it first hand. All of the Slovaks I met in America stole and lived illegally in the country. Does it mean that all of these people are terrible and hopeless? Of course not. However all of these groups including the Roma and Slovaks living abroad are vilified. People make mistakes, but when we feel welcome and supported, we do our best. Slovakia will be a more just and prosperous country when the weakest members are cared for as fairly as those in high places. It is simply the right thing to do.

You know nothing about it. The houses you see got gypsies completely free. They were houses in an area that was one of the most beautiful in the city and they destroyed it all themselves. They could have easily integrated into society, and some did, but not the people of Lunik 9. I know this is incomprehensible to some, but under communism, every gypsy had a job and had to work, and the salaries were the same for both the gypsy and the white. Anyone who was interested at that time could study and know a lot of gypsies who used it and live normally. However, the gypsies from the settlements and the ghetto like Lunik 9 did not want to work but lived from social crowds. They just got used to working and learned to live from support. They don't clean the area around their houses, but they expect someone to do it for them, as the city has done a few times.

@@ilivedbeforethefall2330 if you live in an eastern part of slovakia already you are already super poor and angry about the government and then there is a certain group of people, it doesn't matter if they are white or whatever race, and they keep harassing you, stealing your potatoes, having fights on your street, littering etc of course you would start having certain prejudices or stereotypes about them. If you live in Bratislava where you rarely experience such a behaviour you dont have that stereotypes and look at the issue from a different angle which is of course a long term more progressive solution. I think the right thing is to have little a bit more critical thinking and also consider people who may not have the right opinions but they are still people and bring them to the discussions and not just label them aaah they are racists...

Daniel klimek is right. Units were given them for free. In short time they managed to destroy it. Taking of bath tubes, electric stoves, toil ets, doors, windows. Shitting out off windows. Throwing trash from windows. City Council did clean up. Many times.
