- Dates: March 12th 1989 - May 28th 2014
Locations: San Diego, Seattle, Philadelphia, Leiden, San Francisco, Helsinki, Nimes
Filming type: Professional (Pro-Shot) & Audience
Notes:
Originally released in 1988, it actually took until 2014 for every song of the album to be played live in its entirety at least once.
While most of the songs were instantly incorporated into their live shows, some few like Frayed Ends, To Live Is To Die and Dyers Eve were either just played partially or not at all.
Dyers Eve's full Live Debut was on March 5th 2004 and it has been played multiple times since then.
To Live Is To Die has only ever been performed once live at Metallica's 30th Anniversary shows in 2011 at the Fillmore in San Francisco, CA.
The Frayed Ends of Sanity's full Live Debut was the last one missing until it was finally played in its entirety on May 28th 2014 in Helsinki, Finland on the "Metallica By Request" tour.

Gracias x la info me cuenta tarde jajaja gracias
Thx bruh
I fucking love it saw them 2twice damaged justice department tour 1/17/89 with queensryche supportung operations mind crime & 8/19/89 @ the summit the cult opening act... love metallica my favorite band hands down!!!!!!!
James did a pretty nice solo on The Frayed Ends from Seattle '89 (after he fucked up the lyrics)!!!!! And, there's a better quality video of the performance of this song from Helsinki (as well as for TO LIVE IS TO DIE)!!
Best Metallica album ever. Period. Tired of hearing of how Metallica "sucked" after Cliff. Jason rules.
TheFrayedEndsOfSanity 01 This. Exactly!!
TheFrayedEndsOfSanity 01 to je to brate AJFA je najbolja
SkyKiller HD Tako je brate😉
I didn't enjoy the album just because of the mix
The mix doesn't bother me so much. I like Death Magnetic a lot despite the shitty mix :)
The performance of ...And Justice For All was literally the sickest thing ever. I love how the statue and the lights collapsed as soon as the song was ending.
Couldn’t agree more, when I first saw this video I was mind blown.
It was mind blowing
2:52 That Jason Growl is biblical
Jason made metallica better
@@raulduke1528 Really, he *was* Metallica imo
Old Metallica was best....New Metallica...they don't suck, but their live performances don't give me goosebumps as their old performances did.
Metallica will never suck
Goose bumps where I didn't know I had hair follicles.
Then they tried to be Mötley Crüe. Boring as a dog's ass, most of the last 30 years.
Ya but back then they were in their 20s and could handle the beast of touring, nowadays these cats are about to be 60. Of course it’s gonna lack some passion . Happens to us all.
I totally agree with you I'm 46 yrs old and the old 80's Metallica was the best but if I could ask James Hatfield and Kirk hammet what inspired you to write of wolf and man I mean the impression is the song is about werewolves which is different anything else I've ever heard by Metallica
Man, the drums in Seattle, Lars was at is best!!!
Is drums sounded AMAZING!!!!!!!
The drums sound sped up. It sounds off.
@@Mad_Axe_Man125 the kicks are a lot more traveled I like it
Lars headbanging while drumming on the Eye Of The Beholder intro is badass as fuck. Thanks man for taking the time to make this.
Seattle 89... best show ever
For whom the bell tolls is so good in Seattle 89
@@bradya456 It's the best rendition ever recorded of that song, even better than the studio version. The performance brings out all of the sheer power of that song.
dleifteH semaJ no
Mexico city '93?
The whole tour was like Seattle but Seattle was the concert with the best recording. I personally like the Concert from Mountain View just as much because they played Damage Inc
i forgot how intimidating james was at this time and lars was incredible ,
Backing vocals from Jason were freaking brutal
👹👹👹☠☠☠🤘🤘🤘🤘
GOLDEN AGE...no fucking phones...pure rage...
Thank you for doing this. AJFA is my favourite Metallica album and live its even better thanks.
Agreed on the live part, AJFA is top 2
Best Metal album ever. I have struggled with this question, for me it's a running equal between JUSTICE and Iron Maiden PIECE OF MIND. I'm ok not being able to decide.
its my second favorite behind the black album
Sick performance of Eye of the Beholder. Listen beyond the recording. Lars sounds dope. Dust this one off gents. Bring it back.
Metallica says that it is too hard for james to play and sing at the same time. That's why they dont play it
But I would love to see it aswell
This song is almost progressive ... The lines is all breaking times ... So fucking hard to play and sing at the same time ...
@@bradya456 Interesting, Metallica has way harder songs they play live that James plays and sings at the same time, this one is pretty easy actually. Hope they bring it back
What a huge contrast between the power they had back then and the newer videos at the end. Can't blame them but can't deny it either.
Dyers eVe was missing only one thing: Double Bass
rob is the best bass player metallica's ever had dude
Clyine doubble bass is about the drums😅
Can he not pull it off live?
@@kleenklyine wrong, but alright
@@Mad_Axe_Man125 He couldn't pull it off in the studio, the kicks were recorded separately. That's why this song was excluded from every setlist for a couple of decades - Ulrich can't play it
30 years have gone by and that mid-song riff 3:05 still gives me chills
Oh yeah.
Pulled for you
Shortest straw
Pulled for you
Shortest straw
Shortest straw has been pulled for you.
awesome!awesome!awesome!
If lars practiced like he used to he would be one of the greatest drummers ever.
😅 he never does ,😂until these days
Jason jammed so hard! A piece of Metallica died when he left.
Nah Rob is just as good as him
Cliff and Jason were both really awesome but Rob has been in Metallica for 19 years now. It's long past time to accept that he's the bassist now. Enjoy and appreciate him because he is really really good too.
The shortest straw was incredible!! I love Kirk’s solo and Jason’s powerful vocals.
This is when Metallica was at it’s best imho. That energy. And the songwriting on ajfa..
Never seen this performance of Shortest Straw, absolute gold!
Jamie Aitken estacy of gold!
I'll leave
The frayed ends of sanity 2014 sounds really fucking "awesomezing"
MisterBaltiloca Sounds pretty good especially James vocals. Great song.
Amazing dyer's eve
i am totally surprised with the way Lars played it - correct... hahahah
he didnt dubble bass the verse.
Jayeahms Godfield still a lot better than expected though.
Indeed, absolutely remarkable.
totally weak! lars didnt double bass it properly. since he ever was a rather weak drummer, this totally nails his incapability
Should have included the '91 Moscow performance of Harvester instead of the Seattle '89 version. The Moscow version is way better.
Coltallic exactly my thought, but I think it had been too hard to find a decent copy to edit and upscale it, etc.
I like more the donnington 1991 one
@MonoChronicle his singing in mexico was weak, although instrumentally its perfect
One thing I dislike a lot is how people criticize against ...And Justice for All the song. Criticizing that its too long and not heavy. But for me its a fucking master piece its really spot on. The harmony part at the end really just gives me the chills.
every time I hear “ONE” now, all I can think about is that PUNISHER trailer. Sooooo badass
I watched the whole thing. Damn this album is so good!
jeromesnail ikr
If they had played dyers eve in seattle 1989 some People could have died haha
Even Karlsen even Fight Fire with fire.
Yeah this is METALLICA MANN
1:13 that riff gives me chills!!
Jason is fucking awesome
i will forever love this band, this album, this tour every nook and cranny of every morsel of what this album is about from riffs to drums to lyrics. its completely perfect. i got to see this tour when Queensryche opened for them during the Operation Mindcrime Tour on two hits of blue unicorn. one of the best amazing memories i have related to music. thank god for this band and able to grow up with them playing in the background the tens of millions of guitar players bass players and drummers they've inspired and still selling out everywhere they play. its quite remarkable and inspiring. gonna be a sad day when they retire.but damn the discography they leave behind helped me, nurtured me, saved me, related to me, understood me, thank you Lars Ulrich for being you and not compromising at any bad critic over the years. y'all are my go to band....just about everyday seriously will never get tired of this album or any other. 40 year career in Metal? unreal
first time in 30 years I hear some of his best songs played live, Awesome!!
I love hearing justice songs live from the late 80’s/early 90’s. So much energy and bass!
frayed ends of sanity is just amazing...greatly underated
They sounded so huge during this era's. Kirk and lars are coked up, James is drunk with hate. And Jason is stoned
I dont think james passed on the coke
@@raulduke1528 no coke for James.
@@Badass1974 I'll m sure he did some but not a lot
@@raulduke1528 no he opened up about his use of booze and painkillers . No cocaine and weed. He said he smoked pot a few times back in 83.
@@Badass1974 cool thanks for the info
Dyers Eve, so fkn good.
I use to have this and the San Diego 1992 live VHS then bought Live Shit Binge and Purge DVD set when i had more money. Wow good times watching this concert.
Anyone who slags off current metallica never saw them in this era.... they were on another level
The older mattelica did a good job on Dyer's eve I'm very surprised, James vocals ,lars actually did a good job , Kirk was slightly rusty in the solo but not terrible...but they did fuck up to live is to die, and Kirk def fucked up the first version of frayed ends of sanity lol...the second time frayed ends of sanity was also shockingly pretty good by the old Metallica, good job....miss the way they used to be a powerhouse band! We all get old!!!! Thanks for all the years and music you have given us!!!! Really appreciate it!!!
The Frayed Ends of Sanity!! Wow had no idea they played this. My fav off of AJFA!
Uuuhhhhh... WHAT?! That Dyers Eve performance was awesome! Totally surprised by how tight that was. I was expecting Lars to drag and rush the shit out of it (he does a little bit, but he always did at least a bit even in the old days). I was expecting James to not be able to keep his voice up that well. I was expecting Kirk to make up a sloppy solo but he pretty much nailed it! And Rob, well his fingers have to be made of rock, I swear!
My favorite album from these ICONS.
First concert I ever attended in '89. I was 10 years old.
And justice for Jason!
OMG how can those drums sound so divine?
Speed is nothing without a nice melody
One eye of beholder is so underrated is the same with live is to die, man i hope Metallica play this album in live
So cool these mixes!
Eye of the Beholder ROCKS>..the drums...damn...
Man Metallica really hit the nail on the head with bassist Rob.. He has such and awesome personality.
Thanks for uploading
they did To Live Is To Die in almost every set during the AJFA period and many times during the 90’s, but never as the full length song. It was an opening for a lot of songs and is just labeled as an instrumental portion on just about every streaming platform. It’s really great to see
great idea!
Love them playing the old shit, love the new guitars, still when I hear justice I see James with his white guitar says eat fuk or fuk em up! Play em live James!
That's how a snare drum should sound. Lars for the love of GOD, bring back that sound.....
So good and so sad to watch this (the "before 1990 parts")... THANKS!!!
I have live shit box box 3 cds and 3 vhs tapes this sounds much better thanks!!!!
As a AJFA lover, just THANK YOU MAN! This is outstanding stuff!
Wow... Nobody would ever accept this, but I think I've heard auto-tune on James twice now... Dyers Eve in this video, and when they played in Mexico on the World Magnetic Tour. - I think someone did that in post-production...
There is auto tune all over Metallica. Go watch the Vocal only Video of S&M
Michael Angelo H. All dvd releases have auto tune on his voice. Cd and video.
@metfan41 You've got a knack for uploading awesome Metallica videos. I'm loving every single one you worked hard to put up. Keep up the great work!
Frayed Ends of Insanity is a hell of a song to have to play live...these guys are machines, masters of their craft !
Kirk successfully winging the "Frayed Ends" solo. 😜 - Fricking song unraveled after that though...
Can't stand that guitar tone.
where is The option this is GLORIOUS?!!!
This would of been the tour i would of loved to see
JUSTICE WAS THE "PICK" OF THEIR PLAYING MUSIC AND SKILLS MAN ;)
TO LIVE IS TO DIE IS 👍💥🤘💫🤘💘👍 ! ! !
From the looks on their faces, it should be called "Frayed Ends of Misery." I'm so glad they recorded it live finally. I didn't know the 30th anniversary show at the Gilmore was recorded with video. I must find other gems they played that night.
They look really uncomfortable AF because they were playing outside on a really cold and wet night. Really good performance of it though.
dyers eve give me chills, i love this sound !
I thought u died
Justice has been served! Thanks for the upload.
The best metallica
When Metallica still used to kick ass.
Goddamn Seattle 1989, the show i wish the most i was there
Another kind of Rockumentary 👍🏻
Cool ,man, Uruguay.
TRE-MENDO el sonido (del 89) , muy muy groso
Wow .last song and new bass player.epic
Best fucking album
Seen them during the and justice for all tour in Birmingham NEC,to this day 1 of the greatest experiences of my life,my mate fought shit loads of people to get Lars drum sticks, god rest is Crazy soul
Saw this on show at the Providence Civic center totally awesome. So powerful
56:13 I love this part when guitar stop and Lars continue idk its just satisfying
I know what you mean, totally agree :) Feels even more on the studio version though, that imploding feeling.
Nick Red fck yeah I feel badass instantly
This is the first time that I watch "Eye of the beholder" live, yeah
Petition updates the shortest and dyers eve songs of the official metallica channel please
Thanks for using Jason performances. He deserves it!
Dude!! Can’t thank you enough for this!!
Thank you for the full version of Frayed Ends, that was awesome
One of the best live perform I ever see..thank you Bro !!!
one máster for all !!!!
Dyer's eve. Fuck yeah. One of the sickest riffs I've ever heard in my life.
Just my opinion but the harvester of sorrow from moscow '91 is much better, i was waiting for that version.
I hold a different opinion, that contradicts yours. In Seattle 1989, the intro of Harvester of Sorrow is something special. The only way I can describe it is that shit gets PRIMAL. Hetfield is even seen barking, as the sinister guitars accompany the pounding drums. Sets the stage for an excellent performance of the song. Also the vocals are much better than the '91 version. More grit, more attitude, more aggression in '89.
Daytime isn't the right fit for the song.
Zythinal1
that last point really makes sense lol
Cowardly lion rocks 👍
I LOVE old Metallica
LOL cool intro and commentary from James!
"One" is so damned tight!
3 times I was blessed to see the best. My 42 birthday. 926.. . Love. Them still
Missed my VHS tape of this concert😊
05:00 whew that BLACKENED solo does justice to guys like Viv Campbell and Rory Gallagher. Great!!
Thanks man. This shit is awesome. Great work once again.
Perfect
