One of the main reasons I love Portlandia is the sweetness. It's basically non-stop roasting of a particular set of people, but it's so affectionate, you're always rooting for the characters. In a way, they're all just Freds and Carries from various alternate universes, bumping up against all these loveable secondary characters, with a parade of scene-stealing guests sprinkled on top (Kumail is probably #1 for me, but there's stiff competition from Steve Buscemi, Vanessa Bayer, Kyle McLaughlan, Jeff Goldblum, Ed Begley Jr, Chloe Sevigny and many more). One of my top 3 comedy series of this millenium, I think.
I hate it and everyone who watches it. This show was the beginning of housing prices tripling. And thousands of posers and junkies moving here. Thanks guys for killing something unique because you were to unoriginal not to laugh at us. Pricks.
Blackout is my favorite episode. With the mayor gone astray, and Fred finding him immersed in the woods and speaking in tongues with him; and then the walkabout with Birdman and Teener and Nance. Just magical. I can watch it over and over..
In 2015 my gf wanted to move to San Fran & I used this show to pitch moving to pdx, months later moved across country and first weekend there saw Fred coming out of Millennium Music with a stack of records & it really felt surreal! Hahah
Portland was great before all the posers started making fun of us. Then a flood of goobers without an original thought in their body came here. I hate this show from the moment it aired. Boo to this man.
As a lifelong Portlander I can say that show has this town dead to rights. My favorite is when the two of them endlessly say “go ahead “ at the intersection. The altruism people feel here when they do that is matched by their obliviousness to holding up dozens of cars to let one can into traffic.
You suck, this show was the beginning of the downfall of Portland. All the real freaks were protesting and trying to tell everyone what would happen. Then it did. Prices went up and a flood of posers came looking for a fantasy life they didn’t have the balls to create for themselves.
It's still an awesome place. There's a lot more tents on the side of the road than there used to be, but that's the whole West Coast, not unique to Portland. If you moved there because you saw the show, then I guess I can see why you might be disappointed, but there's been a seedy quality to the town for a long time. A lot just weren't around back in the day to remember the 80s and 90s. I'd rather that people had homes and I could do with a lot less graffiti, but it's a big place full of trees and there's lots to do and great food and people will almost always let you merge when you're driving around.
@@tonymarselle8812 Lol. The culture seen in Portlandia was already EVERYWHERE. Its why the show resonated with everyone... exactly because it wasnt unique.
Edison bulbs in general. Heres an idea... lets use more energy than we need to, so everyone can relearn for themselves why they started frosting lightbulbs and using diffusers and shades 100 years ago.
Probably it will be purely Conan with fans/real people. Conan is fully embracing his remotes persona in the new show, while Andy wants to try Conan's role for a change. I wish them luck.
they should have the schitts creek father and son on to talk about how that show was created. legend has it some guy commented it into existence. the name, the lady, the setting, the father and son duo.. the rest was them i guess but… legend has it.. ;)
Ever since Fred's "I just keedeeng" sketch on SNL, every time he's been on camera, I've been immediately skeptical about whether I should expect comedy. 🤭
Elephant in the room that didn't get mentioned was Portland now with the homeless epidemic, boarded up shops in downtown, among other things. Fred and Carries show was the halcyon days, watching the show now seems dated.
Welcome to the real world. Not everything is sunshine and rainbows but Portland and all of it's hippie beauty are still here. Despite people like you whining 🙄
I'm so high right now that it took 45 minutes to watch this. Is that how it is in Portland? If so, count me in. That cascadian subduction zone has always been kind of a turn-off for me. Edit: I wasted all that time writing that comment I had to rewind the video. Who knows how long it will take to finish?
@@MDK2_Radio I assume that the supposition is that the popularity of the show encouraged a larger influx of people from around the country to come check out the cool town they saw on TV, causing a home-buying boom in the region. I don't have the graphs and charts, but it at least sounds reasonable that there was some kind of impact. I don't know if it IS true; likely almost all of those people would have come anyway since Portland has been one of the worst-kept secrets for the last 40 years. But it certainly FEELS true.
I full on blame this show and all the poser twats who like it. Been blowing glass and being a freak since I was a teenager and I love this city. Once they forget us we can make it cool again. Just do your thing like no one’s watching.
I wouldn't say Portlandia ruined Portland, but I don't think we talk enough about the impacts the show had on the city. It's really difficult to understate the effects I think.
Lol. Portanders need to get out into the rest of the country... the entire country is in shambles. Real estate prices everywhere are insane. There are no real jobs. Fun, hip, local places are replaced by boring chains. The "downtown revival" movement took a heavy hit during the pandemic. And rich out-of-towners and investment bros are actively changing the character of every new market they move into. Its the whole country.
I know this is a CZcams comments section, but can you elaborate (genuinely asking)? I visited last year, and noticed that Portland is very segregated (just like many cities, of course), except - instead of like 'low-income housing vs a financial district', it was more 'giant pockets of unhoused people with seemingly no access to resources vs a bunch of very meticulously maintained single family homes/a public school that was converted into a rooftop bar and event space'... And I literally don't know how a television sketch show would lead to that?

Portland is the most self-aware city I've ever been to. And Portlandia tapped into this perfectly.

I need more Andy!!
I heard that the Artisanal Lightbulbs are coming out with a new album soon.

The jokes on Portlandia could apply to any major North American liberal city, from SF to Toronto to Austin to Brooklyn to Vancouver, etc
My question for Fred: How are you not responsible for the rise in real estate prices?
The right response is that you first have to show how he is before you can ask that. So how do you respond when the ball is back in your court?
