This actually seems consistent between all forms of public transportation.
I think it's a lack of resources thing.
There are many much poorer and/or smaller cities than New York that have much more usable trains and buses. Mexico City, Madrid and Paris, to pick three off the top of my head.
@@sealpiercing8476 The smaller the city is, the easier to move people across it. The more ground you have to cover, the more opportunities for things to go wrong.
@@XavierKaziTheZombie OK there are much poorer but similarly sized cities that also run their trains much better than New York. The MTA is bad at trains and people should have higher expectations of public services rather than embracing the suck.

It's kinda ironic that the police are the enemy in the second summoning battle. Like every time they failed to summon the cops in the prom summoned more smoke cops in this one. Imagine if the next campaign, they have to fight an enemy that summons trains.
I’ve never felt more betrayed than when Brennan was being cute and doing all the 2006 peace sign hand waves and saying “gonna kill that dog” then turned around and said the dog’s hit point max was reduced to 2 with a totally serious face.

I have to say, using spell slots to aid a ritual even in the middle of a climactic fight is a good trick for a DM with too many casters
I'm not sure why they did it though. He would have rolled what he needed eventually, no matter what. If they had used their spells to defeat the ghosts instead, then they might have taken a lot less damage.

@@fraligatr7934 Yes, but they also got "free" rolls. Alejandro got 1 roll each turn. I'm not saying they shouldn't give him spells at all, but using ALL your spells slots is really risky, especially if someone goes unconscious.

They weren't just playing to win; they were there to roleplay and to entertain.
They played out the dramatic scenario Brennan and the crew designed for them authentically, as they should have.
Can you imagine how boring this episode would've been if they just mindlessly killed cops for four-five turns and then started burning all their spells to game the Alejandro roll?
I mean, Brennan would've flipped the script if they tried to pull something that bland, but you get the idea.
Is it only me that loves when Brennan does the rat swarm's lines? I dunno, it is quite adorable.

Honestly I'm happy that the most sympathetic villains got a redemption arc.
I like that pizza rat actually lands an 8, and it's Pete's roll knocking into it that causes it to spiral into a 20. More wild magic.

before watching dimension 20 i never really understood the appeal of dnd, but now i’ve kind of made the realization that, within the rules, you can basically do whatever. you build the story as you play it, and you do that by just doing cool shit. this probably doesn’t make sense. regardless, i now think dnd is the coolest shit.
Same, before D20, I just hastly put together characters for my friends' campaigns. I'd just lose interest in playing the character part way through. But now I feel really inspired to make characters I'm excited to play and actually ROLEPLAY as.

This is my second campaign of Dimension 20 that I'm watching to educate myself about DnD, because a friend of mine asked me to join his campaign, and it will be my first time playing. I can't wait, it looks like so much fun!

@@castlegarden2999 it helps to have characters that have things going on before the players start to engage with them. Giving them motivations and plot traps to fall into helps make it engaging and feeling organic
The thing that makes dimension 20 so special for me is how amazing Brennan is at DMing. As someone who has DMed and played several games, I’ve only ever had one dm that really made a world and encouraged us to role play and make our characters interesting. (It was not me I did not do that). But the world around the characters and the people they interact with are what really make a good game of DnD and allow the players to have fun to the fullest.
So is no one gonna adress that Kug's rat swarms have more HP than Ox without the juicy cockroach
the rat swarm should have 10 more hp then they did because they have 7 hitdice
Well, Ox is from a spell that's much more designed to just be a fast way of getting around than a combat summon. The rats come from a spell specifically aimed at summoning creatures for combat.
@@Inanedata Also, Kug's specialization is summoning. It's the central point of his magic, so you can imagine his summons are more effective than those of a paladin who only does a bit of summoning as a side gig

The last shot of Kugrash putting a paw on the window was incredible, I'm guessing that they film those little details in post but it's always a nice touch.
Right? It actually did look like a cinematic and evocative sad moment for the rat-man-bear! The juxtaposition made me feel both legitimately sad but also laugh out loud at the silliness of the tragic parody, and just at the unexpected mixture of emotions.
I think it wouldn't have hit nearly as well if those rats hadn't been such good, faithful, and brave servants in the fight.
And it's definitely only because of the shot and the music that I really noticed the moment!
Have to say, I am truly loving Dimension 20 so far.

I gotta say, my favorite part of this episode has got to be the visual of New York itself protecting and helping Kingston. Imagine trying to punch someone, only for reality to stretch infinitely around you. And then add everything snaps back into place, they just dead-eye state you down and just say
"Run"

We played a murder mystery one shot where my Chaotic Evil Kalashtar was convincing people with voices in their head and modify memory that they were the killer

Either that or, every time someone from the campaign mentions an animal more than once or shows interest in an animal, he then buys minis of those animals *just in case* they ask for that animal during the campaign. And then he owns those animal minis and starts the process over and over again until he has two (or more) of every animal. Like some weird dnd Noah's Ark thing.

To be perfectly honest here, these pieces are not available at the time of the recording. As you can see in the videos, they are not using them during the battle - those show up in special, reenacted scenes that were most likely filmed later.

I gotta say, props to Brennan for how he's been handling how the wild magic surges sometimes mess with his plans. You could tell from last episode he was planning on having the brawl in the club with the vampires but once the wild magic did teleport and he brought them to the subway he was like "alright, I guess we'll figure this out" and then Siobahn reminded him about the L train exit in Nod and you could see the spark on his face like "Oh my god that gives me such an idea!" leading to this very unique encounter. Bravo good sir!
I think the wild magic was what vaporised the vampires; Nod is the one who teleported them to the subway. The battle-maps are built beforehand; Brennan's skill in disguising the plan while showing the players just enough of the plan that they'll follow it is beyond awesome.
This battle-map did apparently have the signs changed because of Siobhan's joke though; Brennan couldn't believe she'd hit his prep so carefully, and he couldn't resist making it the actual station she mentioned.
I'm fairly certain the battle was always going to be in the subway.
I love that Kingston was so confident about what he said about Pete in private but now he knows he Pete knows and he shut up real quick
He is also seeing that Pete isn't just an irresponsible idiot for the first time. Not to mention Sofie made a great counter argument last episode for why Pete needs some guidance rather than punishment.
So I don’t think anyone has commented this yet, but did no one else see that the nat 20 pizza rat roll that summoned the train was originally an 8 until a red die clipped it and knocked it to a 20? God bless whoever threw the red die!
Based on angle it would seem either Murph or Ally, but on the previous roll, Murph didn’t roll and the red die was there, so I believe it was the latter!

in fairness getting the MTA to run on time is basically a 10th level spell
Combat only lasted 6 rounds, that's only like 36 seconds in real time. Getting the train to arrive in less than a minute is pretty impressive.
“The fate of becoming real” is a pretty metal line coming from a very scary child.
I really admire Brennan's improv to justify more enemies after they unexpectedly murdered the boss in like 2 turns. That Nat 20 from Ricky really threw things off....the rails.

The players don't get enough credit for how fucking smart they think with their spells. Lou's Heat Metal was super clever and a perfect usage.
Dimension 20 has EASILY the best combat out of all of the D&D podcasts I watch, because even the smallest fight feels important to the story rather than just being something boring to fill up an hour. Combat is always cinematic and has plenty of roleplay mixed in, which makes it very engaging to watch (:

This is where I stopped the last time. As I'm speed-watching these episodes because yay, Dimension 20 has uploaded more, I'm reminded that THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST TTRPG GAMES ON THE INTERNET. We've got:
- an amazing setting based on lots of personal knowledge of NYC + a rich (urban) mythology surrounding NYC and the American Dream
- clever character concepts that play with RPG classes and Newyorker stereotypes in such a rewarding way
- admirable roleplay that really sells the PCs as lived-in parts of the setting and shows depth of character
- lovable NPCs with cool voices and accents
- beautiful production value - special shoutout to the sound design and musical tracks
- the funny

I know I'm like a year or so late to this, but I noticed this when watching. From 1:30:24 to 1:30:26, you can see Ally's D20 knock into the Pizza Rat D20 to change it from an 8 to a Nat 20. So technically speaking, Pete the Plug gave Pizza Rat a nudge in the right direction to help the train arrive.
They missed SO many wild magic surges 😂

It could as easily be a commentary on Communism: with the entire society being turned into cogs of the system (aka Santa zombies, attempts at turning out industrious identical workers); whims of somebody rolling through and changing things from choice to what is “best for the people” (aka the “gentrification”, just like the “modernization” of Communist regimes, normally leading to genocide like what was happening with the people dying); and the police just being a corrupt hit squad.

But I also don't know how I would show that in magic form, and since it's ephemeral and not really connected to the US by anything other than land mass, it's not connecting that dream to the most concrete aspects of what the "American Dream" is percieved as.
Ultimately, the magical flow did and Robert Moses's ultimate plan is a magical version of what the real Robert Moses did.

I thought for sure Brennan was going to make the train arrive in X number of turns. Making it a flat 5% chance means that it could easily just *never* happen.
It was only the 5% chance on the first turn of combat. Every turn the DC got lower by 1 so eventually after 20 turns it would be a 100% chance for the spell to succeed.
The fun part is, this is D&D, giving it a 5% chance is *actively* tempting the Dice Gods to make it happen first turn.

If Sofia was a level 6 monk her attacks actually would be magical, but she probably wasn't level 6 by this point.
She has taken at least one level of warlock at this point, with the bodega cat as her patron. So even if she’s level 6 she’s not a level 6 monk.
She’s monk 5 warlock 1. She only has one spell slot and has extra attack as a monk
Because of the higher budget and the general respect of all the players, this is by far the most enjoyable DND game I have ever watched. It feels like so much happens, but all the character development is available and active. Brennan is an insanely good DM and the players are fantastic.

This campaign is a great example of being able to have a satisfying game in a single city
randomly like halfway thru a season like deep in the middle of a fight i'd LOOOOOOVE for one of the players to just in response to Brennan saying "what's your AC again" to just deadass say in all seriousness "what's an AC sorry i've been winging it this whole time"
