When I was a kid I had an idea of a mimic character called copycat. He was a anthropomorphic cat man with a suit and that's how far my creativity went.
Hm, it seems I'm far from the only one with ideas since childhood
I spouse your kid self didn't had much of a wide options to make your character stand out without being odd or generic. I as someone who always dreamed to be game dev on the same level as someone like Harada or Kojima, I would've worked around your idea 🤔
i fw that
Bro knew what he was doing putting an old guy called 'edge master " in the thumbnail
That's me when I break out the book of slurs
come on, how could he not include Honoko into this list...when i read the title, she was first person who i remembered
You're a projecting porn addict
"i myself am a master of edging" 💀
Mokujin reached his final form copy moveset on tag tournament 2
combot in ttt2 could've had any moves from every characters mixed at your will, not to mention he got 1 unique throw for him
I want mokujin in Tekken 8
A chance to see a True Tekken GOD in an offline tournament would be THE best thing to see.
I've always loved maining Mimic Fighters since Mokojin in Tekken 3.
It allows you to have pure unpredicticality in any matchup, flex you knowledge of each char, and no matter what always makes you look like a badass even if you lose.
It's a big "hey, I love this game, this char will show you how good I am at it".
I feel obligated to mention that Rogue in Capcom's VS series was a move stealer as well. Was kinda hoping to see her mentioned in that section, so here I am crying about it.
With the "um actually" out of the way, fun video, more interesting and in-depth than expected when I clicked it. Good on ya~
Yes, especially in SFvsXmen
Double from skull girls second encore is almost the definition of mimic character the other characters even have alts when double transform into them
Great topic and good video! Glad you covered games like World Heroes ans nit just the obvious Tekken/Soul Calibur picks
great topic and good comment to this video! glad you covered game like world heroes and not just the obvious street fighter and mortal kombat
4:36 "Prohibited to play as Rugal"
XDDDDDDDDD
1:45 Cassandra hittin' the griddy 💀
Lmaooo
I can’t unsee that now…
Hate you for that
Marionette and Shadow blew my mind when i was exploring many arcade fighting games with my software arcade machine, dumb kid me thought only Namco games had mimic characters.
I am edging to this video rn
wtf I didnt know mokujin can talk this has massive lore implications for Mokujin's return in Tekken Tag Tournament 6 as a 30$ dlc!
Where did he talk
Didn't talk in the first game, at least. (Ending was still hilarious!)
@@dragun_boss0121 tekken 5
I think main reason lorewise if considered Mokujin only resurrects whenever there is something beyond evil like Ogre and another thing from business/licensing with guest fighters (Ponders in Charade from Soul Calibur*) If I remember correctly Squire Enix made a lot of fuss regarding Noctis (they kinda reimbursed for it by lending the stage assets and music for them) having his moveset likeliness being utilized by either Mokujin or Combot though aforementioned shuts it down. I hope he returns in Tekken 8 and without any external issues
>tekken falls to "accesibility"
>we will never have Mokujin again
>we will never have Combot again
It's over
>we will never have Combot again
Random Box is thataway, we stan the guy that changes every _round,_ not every _match._
Sad times for us Mokujin males
@@Lenohwell if we’re talking about who is just conceptually better for a mimic character and putting all nostalgia aside then Combot > Mokujin
@@strykah92Putting all nostalgia aside, Mokujin has appeared more recently than Combot.
@@Lenoh well it’s no secret Mokujin has appeared in more games, but I’d say that’s a side effect of Namco trying to be overly ‘safe’ after the notorious backlash T4 received (most of it was deserved). But changing mimicking per round can easily be implemented for Combot too, it’s not some character shtick lol.
Winning using a mimic character screams: im better than you with my character and your character.
And i love it
It’s sad how these characters are a dying Breed because of companies like namco giving the FGC too much attention. A character like Mokujin would be HYPE during a big tournament but Harada is way to blinded by his sunglasses to see it. Btw as someone who has been watching for years, i did not expect a video like this. Good job!
ngl i think TTT1 Unknown is cooler because she switches mid round
Blinded to see what? A Character way too complex or just so much of a waste of resources to be implemented and used by who? Casual playerbase? In no game mimic characters made a significant dent in the tournament results. The best middle of the road is characters like Ogre from tekken 3, all the non returning characters crammed in one beefed up version that can use most of their moveset and even then it becomes a balancing nightmare since he was ither busted in T3 and TTT1 or absolutely low tier like in TTT2. Get a grip man, if you want mimic characters play something prior to 2014.
But... what's wrong with wanting to have fun?
@@AlbertTheFinalNO FUN
@@AlbertTheFinal it’s people like you that ruin everything
Mokujin is Tekken's greatest creation
In DoA there are a couple amalgamation mimic characters. Raidou, his daughter Honoka, Nyotengu and Phase 4. Raidou has moves from the original DoA1 cast only since he's that game's final boss, with a fireball and an EWGF unique to him, and Honoka copies moves from characters from DoA2 onwards, along with a unique "rekka" stance that can lead to some nasty mix-ups. Nyotengu possesses a more fleshed out moveset of a previous boss character Bankotsubo, including a flying stance and a hurricane zoning tool. And Phase 4 is a clone of Kasumi who trades her low risk, highly adaptable moveset for teleports that she can use to mix you up or extend combos. Figured I'd mention them because DoA deserves more love
I was just about to conment this cuz ngl i was shocked honoka wasnt in this
EDGE MASTER?
Double from skullgirls is an amalgamation character right?
not rly, Double has unique moves
@@mistery8363 her normals are from other character's moveset, but her specials are unused character moves
@@ben10inchesyeah, those are unique
Another good example of Move Stealer is Shinnok in MKX, in the variation Impostor you can steal the move from a character, some are not useful like Liu Kang flying kick but some are great for combos like Quan Chi trance spell or Leatherface's chainsaw sparks.
Love this content direction from ya. Keep it up man your voice is great!
This video was amazing!!! Quality content right here
You would think that with the power of the Ps5's ssd they would be able to make shang tsung morph into every character again for the first time ever in 3D, but nope. Ever since 3D, Shang Tsung is not Shang Tsung anymore he's just some angry wizard.
That would be extremely broken
@@terry.1428 If they did it like they used to in the 2d era, no it would not be broken. Shang Tsung is not top tier in any of the classic MK
he can morph into his opponent for the last 3 games and got several moves baked into his movesets from other fighters in MK11. loading characters is definitely a issue, but if Shang Tsung gets the morph into opponent + a few moves from other characters + have a few basic attack be a shapeshift that would be fine enough.
Never did I think I'd hear anything about Biofreaks again! Thank you for that!
Subscribed, love that content
Loved it, subscribed
Feels like modern DLC practices are the reason why these characters rarely appear after launch. If I remember correctly I think Capcom handled it alright with Eleven, being a bonus for people already buying the season pass. But not alot of people would buy him individually, let alone a big wooden test dummy.
Completely unrelated but I think the move you’re talking about is Iggy’s 6B, it’s an overhead where he does a sand dio overhead punch. God Iggy’s so cool.
I love it 😂 Mokujin soon my brothers and sisters. About Xmas time I am calling it now❤
COMBOT MENTIONED 🔥🔥🔥🔥
was disappointed edge master was a mimic character cause he's the coolest design in that game
i didnt realize you were mokujin guy for a second
i was watching through this and said "man this video is great i wonder if this guy also watches those tag 2 mokujin combo videos"
then you were that guy
love this direction though, wouldnt mind some more
"Edge Master"
bro please make a long ass mimic character tier list video. i would absolutely watch that
i miss Mokujin
😓Man, though, appreciated, the fixation on things being "Balanced" has made the devs look at these fun characters as massive Red Flags, too complex to approach. In the late days of TTT2, I feel videos on how Mokujin in TT2 got better and easier combos as certain chacs, scared the devs for the next games. But people ignored how other movesets were severly hindered with Mokujin's size and shape. Which I thought was a fair and balance situation.
I expected at least something on Mokujin since it seems to be the honored one, but I guess I'll check out the video you linked
If the FG youtuber likes KOF its an instant sub for me. But knowing the concepts for Rugal just shows its a real one.
Some mimic characters have tricks of their own
Glad to see someone who remembers Geegus *(Gelatinous Execute and Exterminate Genotype Ultimate Soldier)*
The World Heroes series is underrated and deserves more love.
About Geegus, he is fully playable in the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom port of World Heroes 2
He can defend himself in his base form in that port which is kinda cool.
I would like to see Geegus in a new SNK crossover game.
3:25 when I reached this comment!
Edge Master?? Huh, I must've missed that as a kid 😂
And also Amalgamation character from Dissidia Final Fantasy is Bartz. He copied moves but also twist a bit (sometimes combines or straight up copy) from other Cosmos aligned characters.
Damn, I was literally going to make a video like this because of how much I miss Mokujin 😂
Good on you for noticing. The FGC is killing certain aspects of what made fighting games so special back in the day. No hate to them but I miss mimic characters and unlocking characters.
Unlocking characters? That shit can stay in the past. Half of the characters had some ridiculous requirements to unlock them. Then you had games like Capcom vs SNK 1 and Marvel vs Capcom 2 where unlocking characters were unnecessarily tedious.
People claim they don't have to have the time or patience to learn fighting games as it is. I doubt bringing that back would all of a sudden change that.
@@trellwhitehurst6670 it’s understandable you feel that way. I just miss the feeling of mystery about fighting games. Now you know everything about it before it drops and I just don’t feel the same joy anymore. DLC characters don’t quite give the same satisfaction. Announcement trailers are hype, don’t get me wrong; but after that first rush that’s pretty much it.
Don’t get me wrong, I know it will stay in the past. Nostalgia plays a big part in this opinion. I liked MVC2 and CVS1 tedious unlocking systems, because it made everything feel earned. Going to a friends house and being like “oh wow, how’d you unlock (insert character)?!”.
This is ignoring the FGC, and entirely going off of enjoying the experience of spending time playing the game as a whole not trying to master a single character.
@@ChiefTakinawa you weren't going to have that feeling of mystery even if they still had it because of the internet.
No way in hell you enjoy the tedious unlocking in CVS1, especially with how stingy they were with the points.
@@trellwhitehurst6670 that’s another issue all together, obviously.
But, I did enjoy finally unlocking Morrigan, Evil Ryu, Evil Iori, and Nakoruru in CVS1. As I said, nostalgia bias. Not afraid to admit it.
FGC’s laziness is to blame regarding unlocking characters, I remember a Quan Chi main in MK9 having to complete ASAP the story every time they entered a live tournament in order to use this character, because the organisers couldn’t be bothered to have a complete save
I love that there are more mokujin lovers, it's been years since I use him as my nick too
While everyone else was playing Link in Soul 2, I was a Charade main. Thanks for keeping the faith.
they call me the edge master
Honoka from DOA is a Mimick Character.
WAIT THE WHAT MASTER???
I like the "Composite/Amalgam" style like Ogre and Necrid. Something about taking bits and pieces into a single weirdo is neat. Though like you said, Mokujin is the Honored One in his style of Mimmick. Rogue and Android 21 also copy moves to a degree(but weirdly enough Mystique in Mutant Academy doesn't pull a Shang Tsung?) Not sure how to place Super Buu in Budokai 2 and 3, where he can copy certain characters, but not everyone.
Those characters are Fighting game equivalent of Peter Petrelli
Unknown is my fave mimic. Part because she looks awesome part because you can change to another random character if you get someone you have absolutely no idea how to play.
3:09 that was thirty years ago woah talk about old!
Robot kyle guilty gear isuka my beloved
Edge master is such a wild name lol
Rogue in the Capcom versus series good steel moves in some of the games as well. In fact, now that I think about it there's a couple of characters that could be considered mimic characters in that series more or less
I know you decided to reduce the examples to make a shorter video. But, damn, id love a uncut version that is just a compilation of footage of all mimic character across the time
Yoshi's move steal gimmick is something I've always hope for a return. As an alternative Flash.
Kilik & Sophitia being mimics in Soul Calibur V is one of the randomest thing ever
the Cycloids, Ace and Cell from Arika’s games are really cool
Someone was so goated that the arcade banned Rugal from being played. Bless. EDIT: Multiple arcades.
"The strong rule. The winners are just. That is my belief. But then again, I think Democrats can save America" - NEO GEEGUS, World Heroes 2
No seriously, that is his win quote in the arcade version of WH2 🤣
Amazing.
Ey you forgot about Dr. B in tekken 3. Having an input dedicated to copying heihachis entire moveset for a single move, while also having a bunch of other peoples moves speckled around
Master of Edging. 💪
A shame Edge Master never made it too the newer Soul Caliber, my favorite when it comes too mimick character and maybe Tekken Combot , because a robot mimic character makes sense .
Bring back mokujin. Long live the Ultimate bro in fighting games.
Spinal is an odd one I didn't even know about for a long time
I adore mimic characters the are most interesting bunch my favorite oldcadan , mokujin
I think you should do a part 2 of all the ones you didn’t cover! I think a major one is Ryu in MvC who has the ability to transform into Akuma or Ken when he’s level 3
I HAD forgotten THAT!
My favorite type of mimic are the ones that pretend to be a chest and bite people to death
Nice video!
What is the name of the song that plays when Mokujin appears?
Tekken Revolution OST - Chopper
There is also double in skull girls too but idk if she necessarily counts but she exists
The greatest amalgamation character
Tekken 7 leroy
In GBVSR Lunalu has a list where you can toggle each fighter, plus choose whether you want to keep the randomly selected character between rounds or choose another every time. Now that's quality of life.
Somebody said that such a list also exists in Dead or alive 5. Haven't played, can't confirm.
UMK3 Chameleon is my absolute favourite of the mimics. Shang is great, but there's just something about my boy that speaks to my soul
WE NEED MOKUJIN IN TEKKEN 8 🗣️🗣️💯💯💯
TELL EM
If you want another "technically".... everybody in Street Fighter 2: Rainbow Edition
I always thought a TRUE TEKKEN GOD would win tournaments with, and a master of, Mokujin.
First time here ✋🏾 is you’re throat ok?
Favourites
Shapeshifter: Akari (The Last Blade Series)
Movestealer: Rougue (X-Men vs Street Fighter)
Amalgamation: Doctor Bosconovitch (Tekken 3 ver.)
Copycat: Mokujin (Tekken)
Interesting example of a semi-mimic could be Megaman.exe from the Battle Network games. From 4, onward he can enter 'Double Soul/Soul Unison' with other characters that give him their abilities and this can be done in between turns (Since BN is a card fighter hybrid game and every 15 seconds you can pick a new hand of battlechips.)
You only play as Megaman.exe when it comes to PVP but both players can switch souls to that of other characters and given how the games split off into Pokemon-esque editions, each game has unique souls that the other cannot use without romhacks. So it creates a very interesting meta given that each soul has abilities, attacks as well as potential elemental bonuses and/or weaknesses.
in tekken tag I at least, Unknown can also change its moveset to another random character mid-battle.
Shang Tsung is the best mimic character he steals souls even though I love sports fighting games like WWE smackdown vs raw 2006 I still go back to arcade fighting games like Mortal Kombat because of characters like Shang Tsung
10:10
Basically, Mokujin is that one Shaq meme:
Devil-Mishima family drama? A mimir
Azazel?! *Real shit!*
Finally people put the proper respect on my boy Mokujin's name!
Combot in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is technically an Amalgamation.
I'm surprised Rugal didn't get the Copycat skill tree now that we have 3D models and him copying moves would be eaaier now!
Or making a character with that skill!
The Regulation A "ninja girl" uses a Disc reader to use the moves of Samurai Shodown Hanzo...
The cool thing with Mokujin in the TAG games specifically Tag 2 is he could be actually quite broken essentially giving you 2 Kings or 2 Laws turning the whole tag meta on its head.
Armor king is massively different from normal king, the only thing that they are similar in are the fact they both have chain throws and some of the grabs use the same inputs
You know what happened to Mokujin we all know. He was dragged away from the arcade by Mrs. Jin
always loved these chars especially mokujin because i liked to just goof around with him not knowing what any of the movesets i was given can do, but he's interesting for that reason if someone actually mastered all characters they could actually be good with him which is crazy to think about.
you never really see these types of characters anymore which sucks. i was hoping eleven from sf5 would be more like mokujin but just changing at roundstart is kinda lame, it's just random button but with a skin lol.
Does Kameo Shujinko in MK1 count as a mimic character?
Technically Yes
Everyone forgot about Chameleon.
@@HellNutcase Chameleon isn’t a mimic character. She has set moves regardless of who she fights despite them being moves of other characters.
@@thewalliest3956 Sounds like an Amalgamation Fighter, that was featured IN THIS VIDEO.
My favourite Mimic character is Shinnok/Impostor in MKX. So goated. He was a move stealer
0:11 Ain't no way bruh Ain't no fuking way the Master Edger him self
The Edge Master
Bro brought up mimic characters and shapeshifters without bringing up the GOAT SF3 Twelve
Im surprised you didnt talk about Rouge in X Men VS Street Fighter. She would steal your moves lol
Technically Ken is the first. He was just a reskin of Ryu in Street Fighter 1.
i hope we get mokujin back in tekken 8, i miss my wooden boy so much
you forgot the cool guy bot from fighters destiny 2 in the n64! he has the entire command inputs of the entire cast!
I actually fell in love with amalgamation characters because of double from skullgirls
