Decrypting Characters You Don't Understand

- PLEASE sound off in the comments with any characters that I missed or should have been included. If there are enough, I will do a part 2!
Today's video focuses on an unusual character trope that is virtually exclusive to cartoons. Characters who speak their own dialect which includes nothing but gibberish or a single word/phrase. This character type has always been intriguing since it theoretically should impede their efficiency in communicating as well as pose a general challenge in writing dialogue for the show creators. The main trade-off for all of its pitfalls seems to be a unique comedic value and the opportunity to mold the character around the idea of cryptic, yet charismatic non-verbal communication. We will explore the implications of each of these characters and screen for ones that hold the closest fidelity to the trope. Although there are many candidates for this trope, these are just a few favorites of mine.
0:00 - Intro
1:22 - Donnie from The Wild Thornberrys
4:36 - Glep from Smiling Friends
7:43 - Schnitzel from Chowder
10:43 - Coco from Foster's Home
14:30 - Conclusion

Zach Hadel literally just makes goblin noises daily and Reddit is the only place in the world that would hear that and think "WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!?!?!"
Schnitzel is so black that it doesn't even need to be confirmed
i fucking love schnitzel

I love chowder 😍🥰🥰
He's deserves better
I love schnitzel the food, actually my third favorite aside from pelmeni and roasted zucchini slices
If Schnitzel is always angry and stressed out, maybe his gibberish is used in place of profanity...
Beaker from the Muppet Show commits to the bit, he has let out a few English words but they were very few and far between, and never a complete sentence. He's kind of like Schnitzel in that his lack of intelligible speech gets taken advantage of by Dr. Honeydew. The 2011 Muppets film got away with a family-friendly version of "Smells like teen spirit" by having Beaker sing the "my libido" line.
The Muppets also has the Swedish Chef, but he consistently intersperses his gibberish with broken English words so he might not really be an example of the trope.
Should have had sweedish chef or beaker sing the killing parts of bohemian rhapsody bc the animal bit is just bad and takes me out of it
I can't believe you ignored Pokémon for this video, the trendsetter for this trope, and arguably the most famous.
Groot
@@nucleardino8992Came after Pokémon.
Yeah. Although one specific Pokémon, Pikachu, can actually have his dialogue translated into perfect japanese, and then furtter translated to english. Pikapi means Ash, as it's the Pikachu way of saying Satoshi (Ash's Japanese name)
Guy like me? Bam-Bam, plus I was more of a digimon kid
I think you forgot about Perry from Phineas and Ferb, because he's a Platypus, and he doesn't do much.
Yeah but I don't think you can really count that as speech. He's never saying anything different when he does that. It's like clicking your tongue or winking yk. Like more of a tick or shtick
Shnitzel's part of the theme song actually has a translation!
Truffles: "... you stir it all up and then you're done,"
Shnitzel: "You share a big piece with everyone"
Kenny from South Park was always my favorite version of this bit, even if they don’t bother to commit to it later on in the show.
That thumbnail pick goes wayyy to fucking hard!🔥🔥
I fucking love Smiling Friends
This is honestly just scratching the surface of possibly the easiest and most overused character trope to exist. There's also Kenny from South Park, a number of movie ones like Groot; some even having 2 in 1 movie like Chewbacca and R2D2. Mixing in "silent" characters like Silent Bob there is a huge amount of just animals, a lot of them being horses like in Tangled and Road to El Dorado. Freaking Disney's Aladdin has 3 being Carpet, Abu, and Rajah. There's so many it's possible it outweighs tropes like the nerd/smart, fat and/or dumb, etc.
With Kenny you can actually hear what he's saying
Since Glep is only shown to speak english to his grandson, you could assume they are both speaking wingon and its translated for the purpose of storytelling
It's morbidly hilarious, and I'm still wondering how Zach got Tomar to praise Christianity being right in the Christmas special despite Tomar being Jewish.
I say this as a Catholic.
Nah this video is one of the best I've seen all month. Its like your a detective on the old kid mystery's. YOU NEED MUCH MORE VIEWS MAN!

love that king gizz intro
“may the lord have mercy on us all!” lol
Gotta give it up for my boy Shmebulock
i always thought cocos original creators were those two geeks we saw in the episode where they have a reunion
Keep covering interesting characters like this!! This was a great video!! 💕
This was a great video boss, very creative idea to touch upon 🔥
This is awesome!
I hate that I understand all of these characters somehow but only when I dont think about it too much
This is so fucking well done hope ur channel blows up soon
I cannot believe you’ve only got 90 views on this bro ur content slaps!
He's up to 2.5k+, by now 😊
that lost in translation got my mbdtf side buzz
Every Pokémon also speaks this way
the king gizzard song hit me like a ton of bricks i was not expecting it
Vastly underarated, fire content
Schnitzel is probably my favorite Chowder Character
Both me and my sister love Schnitzel lol
He's great
You’ll have an hour long vid trying to decipher the grandma from rapsittie street kids.
Also I feel like an honorable mention should go to Kenny from South Park. While he is speaking perfect English. There are def moments when Matt and Trey intentionally just make him speak in muffled gibberish.
Masterpiece
I think that just normal pokemon could be put in a part 2 since pokemon DO understand English and some like Meowth, Mewtwo, or Lucario can speak it
Gary the snail
What about Margaret from The Amazing World of Gumball?
"co co coco..." like bro the fact i know what she saying isnt okay i dont wanna be a witness
My mom use to compare my autistic brother to Dawny! No offense I’m on the spetrum too but it was deadass funny because they was both wild!
Y’all don’t understand gulp?
Video slaps
I never have watched any of the above shows but all of them frighten the hell out of me. 🤪😱😵🏃🏾♀️
1:35 Gotta like Saint-Saëns's "Aquarium" (I misspelled dude's name when I replied).
😳 lol…Yes! good ear
Omg finally
hell yeah
Funny how you mentioned Pokémon and showed Pikachu, but why not discuss him in the video? Pokemon is literally the most famous example of this trope
I think maybe it's 1-off characters from each show, not when the majority of characters/creatures that all tend to do it on habit/design.
