It was actually one of our questions in my maths classes at university: To see yourself fully from head to toe in a mirror need to be 1/2 of your full size and to hang it properly it needs to end with the upper edge at the hight of your forhead (halfway point between your highest point and the eyes) First time I could rock this knowledge outside of class 😂😂😂
@@ChrisstinaMorgan doesn't make a difference. You will still be able to see yourself fully. Imagine the mirror more like a window and your reflection like a person on the other side of it, however this 'other person' always has the same distance to the window that you have. If you and your reflection both stand close to the 'window' than seeing each other's shoes isn't a problem since your close enough to the 'window'.
The formal explanation is "The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection". In simpler terms draw an isosceles triangle with the three points being your eyes, your feet, and the midway point between them on the mirror. That point on the mirror is the spot you need to be able to see in order to see your feet in the reflection.
This only works if you are standing. If you are doing yoga or some other sort of *floor work* where you need the mirror to check your posture, then you can't have anything in the way of the mirror.

According to another commentor, half way between your feet and eyes and you'll still be able to see your feet. Their source was a Vsauce video so you may search for that for a bit of confirmation.
From the ceiling it's basically eye height. Halfway between eye height and whatever you want to see. That includes upward, downward, and whenever you move your eye height by standing on something or sitting etc. Think of the mirror as a window halfway between you and your clone you're watching.
there are standing mirrors that angle upwards so it's easier for tall people, or if you get a tall one and lean it against the wall rather than hanging
The top of a mirror should be about the center of your forehead (center point between the top of your head and eye level), at the lowest, while the bottom can be as high as the center point between the floor and your eye level. That way, you can see your entire body in the reflection! Keep in mind that if you won't always be standing when you look in the mirror, the bottom will need to be lower to accommodate your lower eye level!

in terms of design, if budget allows, mirror goes full length from floor to ceiling to give off the illusion of space. having half mirror doesn't give that illusion.
It would still give the illusion of space. Even wall hung mirrors which don’t touch the ground at all give the illusion of space by reflecting light and mirroring walls and objects opposite and adjacent to them.
Where were you 5 months ago, when I needed this advice. I moved and had to figure out where to put my mirror. It now stands behind the sleeping box for my dog
Cliff, you forgot to mention the depth. Just dont have it sticking too far out in front of the mirror or you will lose your feet. Some 20 to 30cms max.
it's about the height of viewing into it... not the distance towards the mirror. unless you are right up smooching the mirror. but yes. if you have to basically breathe onto the mirror you will eventually be too close of an angle with your eyes viewing it. a mirror reflects light ideally leaving at the same angle in relation to a perpendicular line. as long as the mirror isnt crooked that is... which is something those optical illusion places utilise actually. distorted mirrors. all calculated. lol.
It only doesn't work up close because the furniture has depth. It works at any distance OR any piece of furniture. If you are right up close you can still hang the mirror two feet off the floor. Your furniture depth needs to be proportional to your distance from the mirror, or less.
i DID know! Respectfully 😊. The cheapest mirror i could get wasn't "floor to ceiling". So i placed it as high as I could to where I could still see my shoes. I'm looking at it now and it IS about 2ft off the ground ❤

This depends a little bit on the width of the furniture and your distance from it. If you stand with your toes against that stack, you wont be able to see them, obviously. The more important takeaway is that you dont actually need a mirror to be that big to work as a full length. As long as there is no obstruction between you and the mirror the bottom of the mirror only has to be a little less than waist high to work as a full length mirror
Yeah... I have one of those and it sucks. I have only 1 meter or less in front of it, I can't easily change placement of it, and it's not tilted for a good view. One not-so-full length mirror, like those in clothing stores, would work so much better. (((
Cliff height calculation: you can cover the mirror up to 1/2 of your height nd still see your feet. a little bit of pixel counting shows us that for C that would be 5.5 reebok mats so he is 11 reebok mats tall. 4 reebok mats is 2 feet so cliff is 11 mats is 5.5 feet tall thank you
If you need a mirror to see your full body it just needs to be half your height if hung at the precise height. Just draw a side view of a person a mirror and the person's reflection. And then draw the view rays from the eyes to the extreme points of the reflection.
Almost. It’s really just half the height from eyes to floor, so 10 or 15% less than your height. And if there is furniture coming up to the very bottom of that mirror, kinda like in this video, you must stand so your toes are 0.707 times the depth of that furniture away from the furniture in order to keep view of them.
