So many people don't know who mat fraser is, but the world would be a much better place with more people having his mindset
Absolutely. Drop the book already Fraser
@Zeus Mann 1. You're wrong. 2. Im talking about mindset. His mindset could be applied to anything. Not just fitness.
It’s about time that Mat is not burdened with being silent about the ridiculous pressures and situations that he’s overcome for the past five years. Even when he’s being honest, he still does it with humility and tact. G.O.A.T
Each podcast I hear with Fraser in keeps getting better and better. I hugely respect his mindset even more then his performance
Agreed!!
It's because he keeps it real. He's not afraid to be honest
Dude couldnt have said it better!!
I have heard Fraser politely talk about Rich for YEARS. I really appreciate him opening up, I am sure he will get some backlash from it. Good for you, Matt.
Let me preface by saying that, in general, I respect Rich and Mat a lot (I am biased in that I like Mat more since he's even more intense, calculating, articulate, and seems like he'd be a lot more fun to be around). They were both role models for me growing up and their drive is world-class. I got involved in Crossfit at around 2010 or so, was extremely into it, and was inspired by both of them. Saw the whole Froning era (actually sent him a congratulatory Facebook message that he responded to after his first win lol) and have been following the Fraser era and they've been awesome to watch. Anyway, no one cares, let's get back to the juicy stuff haha
A video that always stuck out to me on the dynamic between the two was this: czcams.com/video/Uu7ZqjIzfvQ/video.html
There's a number of awkward interactions and Mat came off as being a bit of an outsider, but it may have also been that the group barely knew him at the time and weren't particularly cordial (right at the beginning). Then watch Froning roll his eyes in frustration (possibly with himself) after Fraser makes a snatch that he couldn't (11:08). The clearest indication of tension is Rich and James Hobart being "jerks" and Mat clearly being uncomfortable with it (16:00 and pay attention to Mat's micro expressions and body language at 16:33 and 16:41). It was like a boiling point had been reached even within the span of that video and Froning became more and more toxic as a result. The way he acted in this video was very uncharacteristic of him at the time, including him swearing which is something that I hadn't heard him do before this video. That being said, maybe it's just normal smack talking for Rich and his inner circle, but it didn't seem like Mat was comfortable with it.
This could partly explain why Rich's side of the story is what it is - he doesn't think he was treating Mat differently from the rest of his friends. Rich's circle seems more cliquey, dramatic, and whiny (remember when Hilary Froning bitched at Noah Ohlsen on Twitter or how Elly Kabboord just couldn't own up when she failed a drug test?). Mat's circle seems like a warmer bunch in general, so he may just not have gotten along with Froning and friends. Plus, although they have some obvious things in common, I do think their personalities, what drives them, and so on are quite different so I can see how they may have just wound up not being that close as a result.
Rich also has a longstanding attitude of needing to win and be the best. He has said it himself plenty of times, his mom, his sister, his wife, and so many people around him have said it. Even in his video response he stated that he couldn't be around Mat when he was injured because he didn't like the fact that there were things that he couldn't do that Mat could. Well, the fact of the matter is, even when Rich is perfectly healthy, there's still plenty of things that Mat can do that he can't.
Rich likes having training partners who are in the upper echelon (Dan Bailey for a long time, Elijah Muhammad, Josh Bridges, Jason Khalipa, Ben Smith, and Matt Chan here and there), but that he's still better than because that's what suits his ego. Mat, on the other hand, builds his confidence from his preparation, a circle of family and friends that love him regardless of his results (not saying Rich doesn't have that), and isn't nearly as outcome-oriented as Rich. In spite of his accomplishments, Rich is still an insecure man who cares too much about what people think of him (even his response was just a poor attempt at damage control for his image but he chose to take an ad hominem route to argumentation and that only made him look worse). Fraser really doesn't seem too care much about what other people think about him and is fully focused on just doing the best he can at whatever he puts his mind to. Mat strikes me as being far more intrinsically motivated than Rich.
Also remember that before Mat showed up on the scene Rich was virtually untouchable. There was a video called "How Do You Beat Rich Froning?" that came out in 2013 before he won for the third time (czcams.com/video/0hZrXjyeJII/video.html) and some of his competitors seem to have accepted that they were playing for second. Chris Spealler even goes as far as saying, "you may not see another Rich Froning for like a hundred years when his time has come and gone." We all know how that prediction turned out. Rich wanted that legacy to live on and he knows that Mat has performed way better than him in a much more competitive era. Instead of the legacy Rich wanted, the question of "Rich vs. Mat" has in many ways overshadowed his actual accomplishments.
I'm inclined to believe Mat's side of the story, but Rich is only human and I can understand why he may have acted the way he did. Rich could have handled things in a more mature way, but it is what it is.
Nice breakdown man. I just came across this video and defiantly don't follow as closely as you wrote out a year ago , but I started watching the CF games in Fraser's first year. I remember watching some of there interactions at richs house.
I wouldn't say I'm a rich guy. He seems like the type of person I personally avoid. Which, that may be more of a me thing.
The way Mat answered that question about Rich just shows how much of a gentleman Mat is. Honest and respectful at the same time. In great detail also. Up until now, no one really knew what was going on between them.
By far the best Mat interview yet. Crazy about the Rich story. Mat Frazier moves in with Mat Best! Best content possible
Mat Fraser = 🐐 Such a humble and down to earth guy and with that perspective and mindset on not just CrossFit but on life as well he’s no doubt going to leave one hell of a legacy. The best podcast he’s done by a mile!
42:50 for THE question?
BTW I came for the controversy and ended up watching the whole episode.
Same 😂
X2 haha
THANK YOU
Thanks mate
Thanks guy! Really appreciate the time stamp xoxo
This was a great episode gentlemen
😅I
I love hearing him talk about how amazing Tia is. Their friendship is so good to see.
“You wanna fight? Let’s fucking Go”. - YES 😂
The discussion on the relationship with Rich was awesome. I always wondered why the lack of the interaction between the two. To be honest, watching Rich’s videos and podcast, in my opinion, he comes around as that kind-of-guy that Matt is describing. Great interview!
I’ve been a huge fan of Mat for a long time. His work ethic, his intelligence, who he is as a person, his growth over time have all been impressive. I also respect that y’all are willing to respect your interviewee and edit if Mat had felt that he didn’t want that story shared. I’ve always had an opinion on both. Don’t most of us?
Can’t even describe how much more respect for Matt I have now than I already did. Thank you gentleman. And thank you Matt for being that inspiration you didn’t know you inspired.
I came here for the drama and ended up watching the entire thing. So brilliant!
I love Mat Fraser's attitude 👏👏👏
Mat “I’ll just read the entire textbook” Fraser
Some Kobe shit right there
@@collecktivfashion it's a cultural problem
What is the timestamp for this?
This must be Fraser's best podcast so far! I never heard the Froning situation tho
His first time talking about it. I knew they weren’t best friends but I thought they would train at the same time and be friends to each other at least
It's a first for everyone
You know what guys, I wanna sell the Froning NanoX shoes I bought after what I heard.
That’s so stupid from him to turn his back on such an amazing guy as Mat
mayhem and froning are gonna lose a lot followers now XD
@@ludomzk1442 we haven’t heard Rich’s side
Every aspiring athlete NEEDS to listen to the first 20 of this!
So, so humble.
I am a HUGE FAN of Mat and Sammy! He's the real deal. Great podcast, guys. I am now a subscriber! Glad you did this interview.
43:00 for froning discussion, your welcome
You will be welcome great In Austin, Texas Mat!!! We welcome you in advance!!!! 🙏🏽😁
Really good inspiration to hear this story, thanks to everyone that made it happen!
This is definitely the best Fraser interview out there so far. The past interviews never touches the nitty gritty of his career. I loved the whole timeline of being an olympic weightlifter into working those hard and dirty job into winning the comps. All of these tell one thing. He can dedicate his soul and brain to anything he wants.
Met mat at an autograph signing in Boston and he is just that guy. Humble to the core and his fire radiates off him!
Wow you guys are pretty strong interviewers! To get people to listen to both these hour long episodes is a testament to your on set chemistry and brilliance as interviewers. I pray y'all much success with the podcast. Don't ever stop, just keep growing and evolving 💗.
What a great Podcast! Really inspriring!
Loved this soo much. Thank you Fraser for sharing your personal life with us. Thank you guys for bring on Fraser
Best CrossFit related podcast I’ve ever heard/watched. Great job guys
Amazing interview. Matt opened up. Thank you for this. This is a gem.
One of the best podcasts I have listened to 💪🏼🔥
Amazing interview! Classy move offering to edit!!! Mat is definitely the GOAT and is an inspiration to me on so many levels!
Only just stumbled across this podcast but it's excellent..... Great bunch of guys having fantastic conversations
Even more admiration for the man who is Mat Fraser 🙌👏
This was an amazing interview. Thoughtful and professional. And Mat did an amazing job.
I remember Matt when he competed his first year, I love this guy. This is his best interview 👍
Love his mentality. The grit and mental toughness is great to see and inspirational!
I dabble in CrossFit along with bodybuilding and rucking. I really like this dude. He’s cocky only because he works hard and can back it up. Winning like he does is so legit. Awesome interview.
What a great interview. I love Mat's honesty which is really rare!
Great content & Mat is a super down to earth dude. He is a guy that puts his head down & get his a$$ to work. You cannot teach that, it is something inside you that everyone has. You just have to want it!!!
Great interview! Both parts!
Daamn...Love the dynamic of the podcast. You are truly learning from every people, thats enriching.
Keep on the hard work guys.
Wow, such a great interview! Awesome!
What a great life story... seriously! ...what an inspiration. Great interview guys.
Right before the controversy is the best part for me... 35:00 HWPO. Really dope interview
Amazing episode! So I always respected the hell out of Mat Fraser but this raises it to a whole new level! Kudos!
Loved it! Thanks guys
Awesome show. Respect Matt and the great show fellas.
Great episode. Amazing story. Keep it up.
Awesome podcast, keep them coming!
Amazing interview.
First time I've the podcast I saw Mat was going to be on and he's been my best inspiration for years even though he's a decade younger I live my life by alot of the ways that he lives his plus went through some similar situations early in my life anyway I'm rambling thanks for a couple of great episodes!!!
This content is gold 🌟
Great interview. Best one yet!
Great interview and discovered some new guys to listen to!
amazing episode, thank you! matt is beast mode
Great interview.
great interview.
Came here after hearing that Rich and Mat have beef 🥩. This interview is making waves in the CrossFit community.
This a banger here boys.
Solid podcast team you got there!
Mat Fraser is today’s super hero!!
Matt is REAL and honest.....How can you not like Matt.....He IS the man!!
You guys knocked out of the park! I love the interview. Matt knows, HWPO!
Amazing. Badass competitor.. Keep gettin it💪
I was very surprised Tia and Mat didn’t do the online comps at Mayhem. I really was shocked. Definitely have respect that he didn’t try to give opinions and laid out facts. I love his Success is the greatest revenge. I have thoughts as to why Rich could act like that toward Mat (and Tia), but that’s my uneducated opinion. We’ll wait to see if we get Rich’s side. Clearly, it didn’t affect him. I love Mat’s mentality- level-headed, focused, definitely a New England influence. I love the Jordan-LeBron reference. It makes so much sense. And one day, someone could top them both
That's because they couldn't. If you go back and look - during both events there was an L1 seminar going on and an L2 seminar for the same weekends. The seminars end up using a LOT of the space in Mayhem and having Mat and Tia there would have been a huge distraction for the seminar attendees and would have been a huge distraction for Mat and Tia.
Damn great episode!!!!
Best podcast!
Matt : I respect you more than ever ; before this conversation I was think you are the typical crossfiter man (over confident - arrogant - superior attitude)
But I see you are a fighter and you had to growth fast as the average , now I see your serious / focus personality ! 💪🏻🤟🏻🙏🏻🤩😀
Can't think of a more humble world champion regardless of sport. Such a classy and intelligent dude. All round BEAST!
might be the best Fraser interview
After this unfollowed rich frowning and mayhem ty matt for this great content
Great podcast!!
I was a Fraser fan, but now I’m all in team Fraser. It’s hard to make judgement without hearing Rich’s side (which we’ll never get) but like you all, I raised a flag or two when tia and mat didn’t do the workouts at mayhem.
It’s so disappointing and shocking to hear how petty Froning is and how he has treated mat.
Can you elaborate more on this? Is it because Froning was training Adams or is it deeper?
@@megaxe1915 That's what i thought as it relates to Tia, but unless Mat did something foul to Rich, I'm a bit shocked by the attitude. Mat strikes me as someone to stays close to his circle of family/friends and won't care to bad mouth others. I know there is Rich's version, but something must have happened when they competed at the same time at the games that Rich hasn't let go.
There were some CrossFit specialty courses and either a Level I or II at Mayhem on a few of those weekends. That is also why Sam and Haley did their comp at Rich's barn and not at the actual Mayhem gym.
@@megaxe1915 tia was always allowed… so it didn’t matter if he was training Haley or not...
I gotta hear the whole story, this really is a bummer. Froning is a hero, turns out he’s like a Homelander
I find it really interesting about Rich and Mat. But at the end of the day there’s no rule that Rich has to like Mat. Does it sound a little petty about the training during Covid, sure. But it’s the type of thing you hear about the whole time - if you’re not in someone’s gang etc. A bit nasty for Tia about the Rouge competition. I do know that Mayhem has level 1 training during Online comp for the games. At the end of the day this changes nothing. I’ve had a preference for Mat. And my totally fav is Pat V! And Tia trumps them all!
Class!
I remember one video where Mat called out the Mayhem crew for working out with so much intensity straight after the games. I can imagine that didn’t go down well with Rich who is used to having everyone suck up his programming.
This 2 part podcast is epic. We have to see a Mat Fraser book in the pipeline 🔥
Love Mat.
I needed to hear this
Sounds like there is more to the story in Cookeville to me.
Good stuff!
I am a big Darren Woodson fan😀
Tremendous interview by you guys. You could truly see how much you appreciate the work Mat puts in and you were able to really engage him in a fantastic conversation.
52:14 Thank you for saying it! It's the fucking truth and my also my guess why Rich is excluding Mat from the cool kids club. Hail to the King.
Kicking him out of a group chat..then everyone else that spoke to him? Mate cmon
Really awesome podcast - Sub'd
Here for the beef!
It is a shame that these two great athletes have beef. This podcast is amazing. As always Mat Fraser you're an inspiration. As for Sami Moniz you are just the best.
Keep doing you Mat and Sami😊
Thank y’all for this content. PT 1 was amazing and PT 2 has been just as informative if not better. Y’all asked “the question”. And I love Mat’s response. DW doing the real work here and giving us the content we’re looking for.
watched both and they're both fantastic! Fraser Fan all the way!
more crossfit athletes please! really great podcast
Mat we STAN.
Come to TX, Mat!
Be interesting to hear what Rich says before judging but Rich not coming out of this in a great light
Great interview I am curious to know what happened 2 years ago that made Mat cry for weeks
Sometime it's going to come out how much Dave Castro has tried to prevent Mat from succeeding.
Any examples you can think of?
@@ceh5r How about that run event, when the finish line was just the halfway point? 🤷♂️
@@betco_92 I chalk that one up to Dave’s DEVGRU background, and the fact that he was a Cadre @ BUD/S. Pretty standard during selection courses (1st SFOD-D does the same thing).
Wow. I just started reading this book WHO NOT HOW by Dan Sullivan. That book is basically talking about what Matt is speaking on. Sammy is Matt’s number 1 WHO. All he’s to focus on is competing at a high level
Talk about knowing what it takes to win!
