As the boat passes you, your bow will be pulled port out, so you need to counter steer to starboard , be ready for this if there is an obstruction ahead, good practice is to wait, as if it’s a bridge.

After 5:22, "Never panic at this point", does that mean there is a different point at which I should panic?

You are only allowed to panic when you have drawn up an approved and stamped panic plan. 🤓

holding the rudder amidship. select reverse. pulsing the throttle causes the stern to move to Port ( left) into the center of the water way. This tendency can always be used to advantage .. once you learn to use it.

That may be the case on your boat but whether the stern moves to port or starboard in reverse also depends on whether the boat has a right or left hand prop.

Are you saying there is no reverse steerage at all ? Because I have seen tutorials of people reversing for miles . Yes obviously its a little harder but just involves reversed lock on the tiller but possible none the less . I am confused !

The past few months, I've been viewing various videos about narrowboating. I'm curious to know if anyone has equipped a narrowboat with a bow thruster? Might be helpful in tight spots if/when operating the boat singlehanded (no crew). Has it been tried?

    • @Strutty1956

+rckchp Most quality new boats over about 57' are fitted with them. Several of Beacon Park Boats ones are. If you look through their videos, there is one on there about bow thrusters.

+Paul Strutt Paul, Thanks for your reply. I've been aware of UK narrowboating for quite a few years and now that I am retired , its on my "bucket list" of things I would like to try before I'm wearing a toe tag. If I ever do get a chance to try I'll certai9nly keep your establishment in mind. Thanks again......

All except one of our luxury narrowboats are fitted with bow thrusters. It's a feature which many of our customers really appreciate for easy manoeuvring.

you could just use a small electric prop motor which can be moved bow or aft ,or even midships if you want to move side ways quietly .

Run aground the bow thruster will burn out the motor

If you don't know this, you should not be on a boat.
