  • Intercept Mission 7 - The Ian Mission was the most dramatic mission to date. Ian was an incredibly powerful Category 4 hurricane that struck southwest Florida and made landfall at the exact same location as Hurricane Charley 18 years earlier. The Ian Mission took place in North Port, Florida, which had gusts of up to ~125 mph. Ian's post-landfall convective, hot tower burst enhanced the destructive winds and extreme rainfall over North Port.

I think I may be one of the oddest people I know but those howling winds and whistling windows, I find the most relaxing sound... I'd go to sleep listening to that.

I want another one to just knock out the power for a week I slept like a damn baby. The generator took me back to the Army days 😊

I use this every single night to sleep and have done for many years - thank you guys for keeping this one up as it’s the only consistent one my brain seems to turn off to. Truly appreciated!

Absolutely INCREDIBLE footage, Jason! Congratulations on such an awesome intercept! It's amazing to get to see such a detailed video of IAN's impacts up in North Port.

Yeah, we remained home in Cape Coral. Our neighborhood held up well. Most are still trying to get their roofs replaced over 8 months after the hurricane, but no flooding. It was a trip.

I was down in Rotonda west in Englewood Florida, the wind and rain were insane. We were in the eye wall for 8+ hours. Every mobile home park in the town and a lot of other things were completely destroyed. Luckily my apartment was spared but we took some flood damage

Ian easily made landfall at least 15 if not 20 miles farther *south* than Charley! Ian hit Cape Coral directly head on, it's right side eyewall slamming Fort Myers Beach like a battering ram. And Fort Myers Beach got the full blast of the storm surge this time, too. Destroyed Plaka on the Beach, Cottage bar, The Whale, even Lani Kai sustained damage with both first floor bars washed away and the roof peeled off the Sun Deck.

Really impressively strong, but fortunately for this location, the results were nowhere as catastrophic as what happened to places that were inundated by the storm surge.

That was a massive storm. I felt bad bc I was heading to Miami for a 10 day cruise and my hotel was full of evacuees snd their pets. They didn’t know what they would left after the storm and I’m like will my cruise be canceled. Yes it sounds awful and I flew in much earlier bc I didnt know the airports would be closed. I grew up on the coast in Clear Lake. I’ve been through many storms but these storms are just getting bigger and more devastating to endure. You can always replace towns and structures but you can never replace a life.
