    Thank you so much for your spot on tips for boat painting. I just got my first motorboat, and getting it ready for summer. You are the greatest guide for my project. It has been a lake boat, and as i live on island, it's going to be a sea boat. sanding, primer and antifoldin, wax and should be ready to go :)

    love the tutorial ... hes wearing a dust mask good ,using the festool sander awesome, also boat travels through water stem to stern so hes sanding with the grain also taking off very little paint letting the sander do the work ..ill give Louis a thumbs up ... would like to see how he paints where stands are located ... thanks again

    It looks like a few areas are sanded down the the gelcoat....is there a barrier coat paint that can be used just for those areas?

    • @charleserps848
      @charleserps848 Před 7 lety +1

      A good two part epoxy paint designed to be a barrier coat is the best recommendation, In fact the entire bottom should have a epoxy barrier coat applied to the gel coat before the very first coat of bottom paint is ever applied. It is the only way to ensure that you will not have blisters in the gel coat.

    • @FixNewsPlease
      @FixNewsPlease Před 4 lety

    Use of personal protective devices is strongly suggested when using paint removal tools. Gloves, eye protection, long pants, long sleeves, and a hooded blouse shirt. Some clothing articles, of which are worn may need discarded, or thrown away after paint sanding. Older bottom paints may contain lead, which is hazardous to ears, eyes, nose and throat, as well as skin from prolonged exposure.

    • @jerrymcintire7902
      @jerrymcintire7902 Před 5 lety +1

      It is a random orbit sander, the power doesn't matter much. A 6" will let you cover more area faster, but a 5" will do it. I have owned several and they were all similar. A cheap one will not last as long, but it will do the job (with more vibration and noise). I would wear earplugs as well as a good dust mask or respirator, depending on what the old paint is.

    While you explain about moving the side support @ 3.30 - 4.16. I am drawn to the view of the support on the other side of the boat.This side support has no 2x4 planks in place to movie the support on that side. I am also very concerned that the 2x4 supporting the side supports could slip with the vibration from the sander and the boat fall onto someone sanding the side of the boat. I have to ask. Are you making this up as you go along?

    • @jerrymcintire7902
      @jerrymcintire7902 Před 5 lety

      He's been sanding and painting boat bottoms for decades, you do what you need to do. Meanwhile, he gets the job done safely, that's why he demonstrated not removing the stand, just sliding it. You can do that even without timber to support two legs.

  • @liquidrum7

    Doesn't sanding damage the gel coat?

    • @giovanninicosia643
      @giovanninicosia643 Před 6 lety

      It depends if you want to sand all the way down to the gel coat, what I did to my boat was I just put a 80 grit pad on my desalt sander and just put a quick pass all the way around the boat to rough it up so the paint would stick you don't have to always sand down to the gel coat, I would only sand down to gel coat if you had a couple years worth of paint on the bottom

  • @pacman4568
    @pacman4568 Před 5 lety

    5.60 we see flash of you used a second plank to slid the support long. So we go from always doing something to never doing something. Sound advice.

      Allergic reaction to the paint or buffing compound. Either take some benadryl or see a doctor. I know this is a bit late, but maybe it will help someone else.
      Also, most drug stores now carry a "shielding lotion/liquid glove", no reason not to put it on exposed skin when sanding/polishing old paint. Always good to take any precautions you can to protect your health. Did it affect any other exposed skin areas, or just your face?

    looks not very safe and dusty when you have sander like that ,, need proper North mask w chem filter as well as dust filter ,, 2 your sanding should go w the shape of the boat Re up and down , so you dont make troughs and looks uneven ,, also sanding alittle bit like that just makes the existing paint thinner therefor flakes when re-applying ,, bare spots should be epoxied ,, just sayin ,, been doin this for along time !
