  • Eftichia Papagianopoulou wrote some of the most popular Greek songs of the Twentieth Century. Born in Turkey in 1893, she was a refugee of the early Turkish pogrom against Greeks and Armenians and eventually ended up in a refugee camp in Athens. She went on to become an actress and a poet. Her songwriting career started after she met singer Marika Ninou who recommended her to the great Tsitsanis in 1949. Impressed by her poetry Tsitsanis encouraged her to become a lyricist. She did and wrote the lyrics of over 100 songs that were recorded by all the great singers of the time. Because of a gambling addiction, she was exploited and never earned what she was entitled to. She sold her lyrics for a pittance , and gave up future royalties. She remained largely unknown during her lifetime and only gained recognition after her death. She died penniless in 1972.
This video was edited from a popular Greek television program "Stin Igeia Mas" which paid tribute to Papagianopoulou in 2020.
