Ex USN Nuke SS here. Dad is a NAMVET AVCM with nearly 300 trap landings on the USS Constellation (CV-64). I heard lots of war stories growing up, so am familiar with much of the airdale lingo.
This is my first time watching your channel, and I LMFAO'd for several hours! That's ALWAYS been the problem with military movies- Hollywood sacrifices realism for dramatic license, and to make a flick understandable for general audiences. As an 'SS', I can tell you- Denzel Washington would have never made it past the point where he interfered with an Emergency Action Message ('EAM' = POTUS' authorization to launch a nuclear strike) in the movie 'Crimson Tide'. In reality, he'd have been SHOT on the spot... but then they wouldn't have had a movie!

You see, the movie is really realistic. Only thing is that you need a sea daddy to make all these happen. They are probably not flying f35 because maverick wanted to fly f18 and sea daddy said, anything for you baby.
No it's just because the F-35 is a heavily sensitive jet and 90% of its info is still classified. They wouldn't let a fly near an F-35 except for photography related purposes. However even photography of an F-35 is only possible with some clear authorization from some 3 star
@@cipherunknown_ apart from that it’s also mainly because they needed 2 seaters to film the cockpit parts and the F-35 has no 2 seater variants. The F-18 does.
@@spitfire_flyer5659 there is a possible story reason that would make sense: risk management. If in the film verse, the Navy didn't have many F35s, and the SAMs we're capable of engaging stealth aircraft, than sending a solid chunk of your very limited stock would be considered too much of a risk (ntm, the risk of anything that survives the shoot down falling into enemy hands). A low altitude strike with an F/A18E/F would therefore be a viable option, albeit a risky one for the pilots given the mission perimeters.
@@Tank50us Yeah, well you can't worry too much about the plot, cos in reality, wouldn't they have got some elite forces up on the ridge of that crater to just illuminate the target for some long range laser guided missiles to obliterate it?

The goose scene always makes me sad for the fact that Art Scholl gave his actual life for some of that footage…Art Scholl died September 16, 1985 in the Pacific Ocean while filming Top Gun.

I'm so surprised that not many people commented on this. The moment I heard Gonky say it, I was right back in my old navy days. "You clowns have to start..." I'm still laughing at it.
My first thought upon hearing the mission briefing was that this is an Ace Combat mission. This is literally an Ace Combat mission in "real life". And I enjoyed every moment of it. I personally enjoyed Maverick more than the original film as well.

I was quietly saying the exact same thing as well. The Star Wars trench run is just a straight and mostly level trench. But most canyon runs in Ace Combat come with tight turns below a certain altitude.
I would be quite interested in seeing a top gun viper prequel talking about the start of the top gun school with Phantoms and MiGs in Vietnam as well as the backstory of Viper and Mav’s dad
Edit: this reply section kinda just devolved so I need to clarify, I’m not saying they should, I know it’s Improbable, I’m just saying I would be Interested in the concept of a top gun prequel, Jesus.
The problem is almost the entire movie would be CGI.
His dad died in 65 so it would need to be a flashback... not to mention having to recast Skerritt. Also pulling off the practical in-jet flying for it would be tough. Only Phantom IIs left are flown by other counties. And then there's the prequel problem. They almost always suck.
Seems like too much CGI. Certainly wouldn't be surprised if they make another after raking in so much cash though.

even the piano parts implies a deep back story. He apparently can play the hell out of it, like that’s a thing for the common person to do
I actually pulled that motorcycle bit at NAS Dallas in the early 70's. Our Quicktrans terminal was on the far side of the base next to LTV and we had to cross a long open ramp to get there. One day, on the way to work, F-8 was taking off, so being 18, I stopped to race him. I was riding an early model 750 Honda. Any way I had up to 100mph, then he just went sailing by. The guys in the tower either didn't see or didn't care.
I had a production MSGT tell me one of the craziest stories I ever heard.
You know how it can be a royal pain to get your personal vehicle shipped overseas as a military guy, and they put limits on how many you can take over?... Apperently one guy found a way around it without spending thousands to ship his car (a corvette I think he said).
He was over on one of the darker more secluded corners of the flightline at the time, working on a jet as a mechanic, not far from one the least used flightline gate at Mildenhall, when he see's this C-130 taxi by about as close to the gate as possible... Lights off, which is unusual, normally C-130s only doing that when theyre trianing for lights out black ops stuff, using night vision, and there werent any exercises like that going on. It parks in the nearest parking spot, one almost never used because it was so far away from the units.
... Then he sees the ramp drop... And all of a sudden, with lights off, a sweet corvette peels out of the back of the plane, tires screeching, and flies out the flightline gate in a matter of seconds... Apparently one of the pilots or aircrew must have sworn his crew to secrecy, and gotten them to conspire to help him literally smuggle his personal vehicle into England, choreographing this little escape near the gate with precision... And he was the only one around to see this go down because it was so rare a maintainer had to be out there to work on anything. Dude looked around and realized he was the only witness to the whole escapade, lol (so take his story with a grain of salt, but true or not, I find it funny as f@#$).

In the theater when he says "The target is less than 3 meter wide" i said "OH COME ON REALLY" .. only left thing was Rooster turning to someone and saying "i used to target womprats in my T-16 and they are less than that"
GF and I literally turned to each other in the theater and whispered, "It's a small thermal exhaust port, right below the main port."
We were all thinking it!!! :)

I loved the quick in lore blurb about F-35 not being able to do it because they're just as aware and want to quickly move past the idea of using F-35s so nobody questions it too hard.
i will never fly an F-18 but I can proudly carry my clicky pen with all the different colors in my nerd pack!
Bob's introduction was spot on. When comparing both films, I still have a soft spot for the original Top Gun since I saw it at the right place and time. On the other hand, TGM has had 36 years to perfect the technology that the first film didn't have, so I would say it is an improvement. I also agree that there should have been more backstory on Rooster.

I just bought an old Ercoupe because it was damn near the cheapest flightworthy plane on the market, and I fully intend to dress like a sh!ttier discount Tom Cruise when I go to fly it for my PPL, if only because I find it funny to act like some cocky test pilot... While flying the "world's safest plane" held together with hopes and dreams after 70 years of flying.

Whoa, that's meta. That would mean that Hollywood made a movie about Maverick's exploits back in the 80s and had Tom Cruise play him, because they look so much alike.

@@PolarizedMechs I think it goes deeper, the movie in the 80s had someone else play 'maverick' so even though they all know his story and exploits, they don't recognize him, because of bad casting
I write books as a hobby (no luck finding an agent yet) and if I had to come up with a contrivance to use the F-18 over the F-35 I would just say that an act of congress has grounded the F-35 fleet pending an investigation that will take longer than the facility coming online and operational. The time constraints on the mission are still kinda dumb, but hey can't win them all. Every story has plot holes if you look hard enough.
That is a lot better than saying the plane isn't fit for the bombing.
Also, b-2s and all sead\dead aircraft have to be grounded as well.
You don't need an act of congress, there are fairly real issues that can ground the F-35 fleet wide.
@@BoraHorzaGobuchul They could've made a contrivance that they are being used to attack other facilities in a coordinated strike. There are always bs handwaves you can add if it's really that important, in the end I don't think it matters. The movie was unrealistic but still very good and entertaining.
saying "this would be a peace of cake for the F-35 but they are all grounded due to the latest software issue for 1 month and the mission has to be executed in less than 3 weeks so the Hornet will do it" would be inmensely more realistic
My thoughts exactly, I just wish after the iconic carrier intro, they should've make a introduction scene to Rooster and others background as pilot on the carrier right after that intro scene.
I think they planned to do it. It's just a small detail, but on one of F/A-18s in the intro, you can see "Payback" written on the side (near the canopy)

On point, I would've loved to have known more about the backstory between Rooster and Hangman.
I agree we needed more backstory. Maverick is introduced by saying his exploits are legendary but we never hear what they were. According to Penney he's been to the desert and Bosnia, and we have to assume over the past 30 or so years he's been to just about every hot spot around the globe, and yet at the beginning of the movie he still only has 3 air to air kills? I'd think he'd already be an ace a couple of times over.
They kept it realistic that way, more or less. The Navy had very few opportunities for air combat during Desert Storm (which Maverick served in) because the USAF's F-15s were gobbling up kills. There was only one F-14 that scored a kill over Iraq, and they shot down...a helicopter. The Navy got no kills over Bosnia or Serbia, and there was no air combat the second go around in Iraq. So it makes sense that Maverick would be standing pat at 3 kills.
Though they were wrong in saying he was the only pilot since Vietnam with 3 kills--Rico Rodriguez has either 3 or 4. (Though he's USAF; maybe the Navy pretends the other service doesn't exist.)

@@PolarizedMechs I don't know if we can assume this world's history matches ours just because they have the same(?) geography and hardware. For all we know they had wars in this world that we never did IRL, or vice versa. I've always taken Top Gun to be close to our world but not quite the same.
@@PolarizedMechs exactly this. Most of the scrapping in recent years has been on the floor not the sky. Add in the Serbs creating no fly zones by pointing microwave ovens into the sky to look like SAM sites and it's easy to see why even CAS was difficult to come by. I recall being told that CAS was unavailable as it's unsafe below 15k, to which my obvious response was I f**king know it's unsafe, I live below 15k on the f**king ground and that's why I'm asking

never get tired of watching these about TopGun
I've watched quite a few of C.W. Lemoine videos with Gonky now and something is becoming apparent. There seems to be a big difference between airforce procedures and culture and navy procedures and culture. It's only small things here and there but it adds up. Mover seems far more regimented if that's the right word while Gonky seems a lot more laid back. It's just little stuff here and there but it's obvious airforce and navy have a different way of doing things. Mover seems a bit surprised at somethings Gonky says and Gonky seems a little lost sometimes when Mover says somethings. No disparaging of either of them. Just something I noticed.
I was a USAF jet engine mechanic. This is definitely what talking to your career brothers from other services is like. As much as I hated my time in the USAF, I in many ways did not envy Navy and Marine people working the same job in their respective services, they tend to be even more high strung, even more restricted personal freedoms wise, and even less well resourced. I had mad respect for them, but didnt envy their jobs. I also got the impression they generally had more decent people in the chain who knew how to prioritize better, and the lower enlisted seemed to have better comraderie than us because of the shared issues. So the USAF being more relaxed on a lot of stuff isnt always a good thing, as much as I benefitted from it personally.
I'm no fighter pilot but I am obsessed with aviation history. And from what I've gathered, USAF seems to do better in dogfighting and operations skills, because thats the hardest part of their job. Its what their training focusses on... By contrast, a huge amount of training and operation time in the Navy is spent on landing skills... Because landing a jet on a rolling carrier deck, and getting it quickly turned around and back in the air, is actually in some ways far harder skills than even combat. Just look at how many pilots have either died or had to eject due to carrier landings. Like, for the Navy, it's better to have good pilots that make it in the air and make it through landings, than amazing dogfighters and strategists who wind up dead after a botched carrier landing because they didnt get enough landings in to excel at it.
Thats not to say that Navy pilots are bad dogfighters by comparison. I can think of at least one example where the diligence of Navy F-14 pilots payed off over the bravado of USAF pilots.
The Navy and USAF got their F-14s and F-15s around the same time (I think the USAF got F-15s first by a few years, so they already had some practice on them by the time the F-14 was entering service). Pilots in each service had some competetive debates over which was the better plane in combat. It came to a head when an F-15 unit and an F-14 unit happened to be going to Nevada to do totally different exercises, but at the same time (not interacting with each other. They were actually specifically warned by higher ups, no hot shot BS with the other services planes). Well, apparently the lower commanders and pilots ignored that completely, and came to a gentlemans agreement with each other. The F-15s and F-14s would basically participate in an unsanctioned "exercise" before the actual respective exercises kicked off. It would occur as the F-14s were flying into the base from their home station, so they'd already be in the air anyway for that.
The F-15 pilots believed they had the better jet for dogfights, and for the most part, they were right. The F-14s engines were cantankerous, and would likely flame out at much lower altitudes than the F-15, so the F-15 had a lot of climb advantage. They also generally got better avionics. They were also at a practice disadvantage, again, the F-15 pilots had more pracrice in their own jets. So the USAF had good reason to be cocky. Sadly, it meant the USAF pilots didnt really spend any time learning their adversary... And thats what the Navy pilots did. They spent what little time they had before this shenanigans kicked off, to study the F-15 and F-14, looking for any advantages or disadvantages they could exploit.
And they found one. The F-15 has a fixed sweep wing that gave it a better turn rate than the F-14 at about mach 0.9, which is where they were trained to try to stay at for dogfights... However, the F-14s variable sweep meant that it could achieve the most turn rate theoretically possible over a wide range of speeds... and there were plenty of other airspeeds where this variable sweep handed the F-14 a faster turn rate than the F-15... So most of the dogfights that day turned into F-14s suckering the F-15 pilots into turn fights, then staying out of the mach 0.9 airspeeds the F-15 excelled at, allowing many F-14 pilots to score kills by turning the tables.
One F-14 pilot who gave an interview a while later even managed to kill an F-15 that went into the vertical to escape him, by following him up and managing to get sights on target just before he suffered an engine flame out himself (showing the competetive lengths they were willing to go to).
All in all, most of the people involved generally agreed Navy won the exercise, and I like using it as an example of how knowing your own plane and the enemy plane better than the enemy pilot, can lead to victories regardless of the relative capabilities of the two aircraft. Its the pilot doing the dogfighting, not just the plane. I think this story kinda sums up the Navy's willingness to compensate for any equipment disadvantage with sheer dilligence.
Btw, I think some of the people involved in this stunt did get in trouble. But there was only so much the Navy and USAF could do given how many experienced pilots were involved (cant just fire an entire fighter unit, lol). Also... Kinda looks bad to the public when an entire combat exercise occurs without authorization from higher leadership, so... I think the military kinda just owned and pretended it was supposed to happen all along, until someone spilled the beans what actually happened, in the media way later.
I found this story reading an archived newspaper online, printed a long time ago. Ran across it randomly looking for other things, and became engrossed in reading it. Not sure I could find the source again, so ya know... Take the story with a grain of salt as to how accurate I portrayed it.

I have a question about the public, and them not being happy about unsanctioned shenanigans by pilots.. Does the public actually care? Personally, I don't really care what the military does with their jets as long as they're not smashing them nonstop, and accidentally killing themselves. I just wonder if the majority of the public feels the same way, or if it's just a hand full of outspoken idiots that have too much spare time so they can write letters and emails, and pretend to be the minds of the general public
As far as our tax money goes, I'd rather pay for these kinds of things than a very long list of other crap that our money gets absolutely wasted on

Im thinking they are planning a 3rd TG, focusing on Rooster's backstory, which will put the entire bar scene in this into much better perspective

Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but the guy who says "much appreciated pal", is Capt Brian "Ferg" Ferguson, the Navy Advisor on the movie.

I was in a bar once with Naval Aviators. It was in the back bar at McGuire's in outside the Naval Air Station at Pensacola in early February 1986. I was with a bunch of IRS attorneys who were attending training. One of the aviators knew me. It was a blast.
I like how they had Hangman press 8-6 on the juke box @ 8:50 Top Gun came out in 1986.

Well for the background story of Rooster: they didn't do that in the first movie either. Mav had some background with Ice before and he had a romance with the lady in the bar before mentioned as the admirals daughter at the beginning in the first movie. And this went on through the whole first movie.
Did anyone notice that right then Hangman see rooster.. he goes to the jukebox and plays "slow ride"? Where's the story there!!??
So far, your the only access to TG-MAV I've seen to date. It's been by design as I've been invited to a private screening by highly regarded movie editor, an (Academy) board member in his personal studio here in New Hampshire. Listening to your preview, your interviews and now the postmortem of TG-MAV its been a hard NOT to see movie as of yet. I think your experience and facts only helps to enrich the viewing experiences for those of us whom have and haven't seen this yet. I personally appreciate your time putting your shows together for us and your friends who help flavor the experience tremendously. In a way your kind of our avatar or at least mine as a combat pilot with your experiences, including your LE time, as I'm particular to LE myself. You will have enriched my total experience when I finally see this movie hopefully in the next week or so. I know there's probably other things you could be doing other than giving us your time and effort in your creations, and I for one tremendously grateful for your time and talent.

I live enviously through this channel. I always wished to be a fighter pilot but never had the opportunity due to leg injuries. Thank you for the awesome content and insight as to how you think!
You could be at least a PPL pilot if you wanted. I recently bought an Ercoupe because it was the cheapest thing on the market, but you might be interested in them because they're popular with pilots with leg disabilities. The plane was certified from the getgo to tie the rudder control into the aileron linkage. And there's an STC I think to relocate the brake pedal to a control on the dash or yoke... I know there's even an STC that adds a wheel chair access door so even people who need wheel chairs can fly them, and sock away their chair in the compartment to take with them.

As civilian old timer who has seen the original Top Gun over 100 times or more, I took the introduction of Rooster differently. I didn’t think there was anything missing that must’ve happened to shake his confidence that should explain his slow flying Hangman refers to. I understood it immediately to suggest that he flies overly cautious because his dad died by flying with the fast flying Maverick when he died. Just my take

Thing is this is classic "tell, dont show " story writing. Showing a flash back of him making it thru training pushing it till getting into top gun training where he has a close call that triggers something,, such as maybe his mother or even Maverick telling him how Goose died for instance, that would be good writing showing even thru abit of telling why he is so cautious even at this level. I even always took it that Hangman knew Rooster was a good talented pilot, and was trying to push him to get out of the comfort zone and over his hang ups to be better, maybe having been there when it happened an his attitude just made it that he could not do it any other way than this.

Just a little nitpick: @0:03 Mover says "Bring some Kenny Loggins into this!" when the Top Gun Anthem starts playing -- but that wasn't Loggins, that piece was written by Harold Faltermeyer, the original film's composer, and was performed by guitarist Steve Stevens (don't know who played the part in this movie).

As someone who isn't a pilot I have a question about the movie. During the scene where they pull up the mountain. They stay in high g the whole way. But wouldn't the g stop once you reached high enough angle? Cause they should do a loop if they keept on puling back right?

As a 172 pilot my knowledge of g’s is limited but from what I understand in flight training you get the g’s by pulling or pushing on the flight controls to get to your flight attitude, once there the g’s should neutralize as you release the controls to just maintain the attitude so in that understanding you pull high g’s to go from steep dive to steep climb but once established in the climb out it should be around 1 g give or take. If it’s different in fighters please feel free to chime in and correct me as it’s just my experience flying small singles working my way through the licences to be a commercial multi pilot.
@@cschram78 no, the laws of physics and aerodynamics work the same for fighters and civil aircraft. I had a book that they used to train WW2 pilots and aside from the language and terms, it's pretty much the same. Only real difference is the WW2 manual taught pilots a shortcut to get a rough estimate of any aircraft's available g and thus turn rate at any speed and altitude using the aircraft's stall speed as the starting point.

I can imagine a screenwriter or a studio person sort of misjudging the audience and thinking they needed to hurry up and get to Tom Cruise after the opening carrier operations sequence to hold the attention. We would have been just fine with a Hangman/ Rooster / Phoenix or whatever situation that introduces them and shows off some F/A-18 action but without mirroring the first movie, and then somehow Maverick gets brought in.

I remember one episode where James Brolin and the other pilot who's callsign was "Chaser" just casually (it was Brolin) referred to a Tomcat as a "two-seater" for a mission they had to do in Iraq, or some other middle eastern country. I couldn't have been older than 10-12 yrs old and I remember thinking "that's a TOMCAT you fool, TOMCAT(S)!" 🤣

One of my biggest regrets for this movie is Tom Cruise is in a bar scene where people are playing 9 ball pool, and he didn't pick up a cue to show them how its done. Arghhhh. Opportunity lost.

It was probably cheaper for the studio to film at North Island, being so close to San Diego.

Mover and I have a mutual friend. I am the Budget and Fiscal Officer in the State Defense Forces of Ohio. Our S-2 (Intel and Security) knows Mover. Our S-2 had a real life adventure last week; the Boeing 777 he was scheduled to fly from Mumbai back to the states was delayed because it took damage from hitting a big bird on its previous flight.

Love your content and expert analysis, and yes the attack IS a copy of the one in Star Wars. BUT George Lucas took it from a real life mission by the RAF in WW2, the Dambusters raid on the Ruhr valley. Check out the 1955 film (The Dambusters). Also look for the easter egg in TGM, when Hangman is on the flight deck of the carrier there's a helicopter in the background carrying the number 617. I believe that's a nod to 617 squadron RAF (The Dambusters).

@@theworldisfascinating Thanks Roger. The difference is that 633 Squadron was fictional and also fed off The Dambusters story. If you're interested in further research Paul Brickhill wrote the book of The Dambusters and also The Great Escape. Wing Commander Guy Gibson (C.O. of 617 Squadron) wrote his own account in "Enemy Coast Ahead" Up to the present day, 617 Squadron still exist and are flying F35's!

This was cool to watch. My uncle retired as a Lt Commander in the Navy, but flew when the first Top Gun was out. He defitnetly had the Goose Mustache. I use to wear his US Navy blue bomber when I was a kid. He was stationed in Okinawa for a long point in time and Corpus Christi.

The Top Gun theme is Harold Faltermeyer, not Kenny Loggins. "Highway to the Danger Zone" and "Playin' with the Boys" is Kenny Loggins. Love your stuff, thank you for sharing your knowledge as a military pilot in your videos. I wanted to be an Airforce pilot in the RAAF, but some medical issues prevent me from even flying a plane. Keep up the great work... :)

I know that they recreated the carrier scene at the beginning where they transitioned from the theme to Danger Zone, but the two aren't always played together through the film. I didn't mean any criticism or malice, I was just pointing out a fact that I thought you may have not known. Have a good one... :)

They should have worked the "Mission Impossible" theme into the beginning somewhere.
They kind of did. The way the showed the mission on the screen with graphics, the ways they pre run the mission, much of the pacing of the music… plus the way they lite the interior of his helmet in Darkstar was the same as the lighting in the Helmet on his HALO jump

I love your breakdown and commentary. I will add a little California police breakdown to the movie as well. YOU CAN'T RIDE A MOTORCYCLE IN CALIFORNIA WITHOUT A HELMET. When the original TOP GUN came out there was no helmet law, but that has since changed. I get it though, the film makers were trying to give us that nostalgia look. Great series, you earned a subbed.

Just came from the last TG vid, and you guys are definitely airmen as afraid of push-ups as you are, but you'll get your salute! Haha. Honestly I love pilots cause you have the coolest job, next to being in a tank, and for whatever reason aviator sunglasses are reg, even in the Army.
No one is afraid of push-ups - we're just not grunts who think pushups are a viable bet. That's for the poors. 😂

This is really funny. My cousin is a retired fighter pilot I’m Canada. Flew f18’s out of Cold Lake and was a trainer as well. He said the same thing about the new Top Gun. He said that stuff wouldn’t happen but he said it was a good Hollywood movie for the masses. He said when he saw the up the mountain then curl upside down part he burst out laughing

Story time. At my unit, my life became a living hell for a solid month because a younger pilot hard landed a KC-135, which requires extensive inspections (and if anything broken is found, repairs). As a jet troop, we were lucky in that none of our crap broke. But in order to inspect the mount bolts, and give another shop room to inspect the pylons, we had to lower and raise ALL 4 ENGINES... And we only had one open engine trailer, which meant we had to do each engine one at a time, and wait before reinstall for other shops to do their thing... And my unit put my shop on 12s, then made me work weekend duty for it during thanksgiving, then called me in half hour before shift on what was supposed to be my 2 days off and said "sorry, we gotta push your CTOs (days off) out because of this crap"... So I basically worked 2 weeks straight on 12s with no days off, getting d@ck punched between this jet and our other14 jets that kept breaking, when we barely had enough guys to do one OR the other. Worse, my shift lead was a complete d!ck 7 level brand new from a different airframe, who was dumber than some of my 3 levels, but kept trying to make sh!tty executive decisions, then going full tyrant on any of us who disagreed with him. Meanwhile, I was a fairly new 5 level as the next ranking guy on shift, so I wasnt that confident in my own abilites, I was straight up asking my shop lead "Can I have an adult please"? (He was so bad, they relented at the end and swapped him off shift, after he damaged a cowling for no f!@#ing reason)... And when we finally got the last engine reinstalled, we rolled from that straight into another week of 12s for a CBRN exercise working in chem gear (basically, space suits without the climate control astronauts get... Working outside in the tropics). So yeah... Needless to say, I was pretty p!ssed off at that pilot. Blamed it on a faulty VSI, but the avionics guys couldnt find any fault in it, so it really just seems like he brought the plane down too hard out of incompetence. It was a nice clear day when it happened too.
... The one thing that made that whole incident ok in my eyes... I found out later the pilot who did that... His nickname became "Lieutenant 1488"... 1488 being the tail number of the plane he screwed up... So he's gonna have to live with that f@#$up for the rest of his career, teased at the hands of his fellow pilots, people who actually have the rank to give him sh!t for it, which brings me a sadistic satisfaction. I heard he got a particular kind of paperwork too. I forget what it's called, but its basically when you f@#$ up so bad as a pilot, that you only get one strike. Get 2 of these things, and the military takes your wings and wont let you fly military jets anymore (basically ending any pilot's career). So if he does something like this again, it'll basically end his career.
Sir! Infact before star wars this exact mission profile was done in the movie 633 squadron starring Cliff Robertson.
There was a few lines about Maverick stunting Rooster's entry into Annapolis, so there was tension between the two. Maverick also explains that he made to stop at the request of Rooster's mother. The one thing I was slow on the up take was Penny reference the first movie, she was the admirals daughter Maverick slept with. Had a good laugh when I finally caught up.
It is strange they went with Miramar in this. I mean, if the move had just recently happened I could understand it but 22 years later (this was filmed in 2018) is weird. I just look at it as the movie takes place in another timeline similar but with differences. Easiest way to forgive the Hollywood moments and just enjoy the movie, which was awesome.

They barely went with Miramar in the first movie. Virtually every scene “on base” that didn’t involve the flight line was filmed on NTC San Diego.

Star Wars’ mission scenario is COPY/PASTE of The Dam Basters (1955) so let’s put that to rest.
Even in the initial screen test done by Lucas and ILM they used external footage of the movie to lay it as a guideline for what there were going to shoot. You could see the Lancasters attacking formation and inside footage would cut to X Wing fighter pilots.
633 Squadron from 1964 is even closer to the TGM scenario.

Low level bombing looks better on the big screen then high level bombing.

I enjoyed the movie a great deal, even though I realized it had to be highly unrealistic. I enjoyed your commentary. I'm glad that I heard someone else opining that some more Rooster/Maverick backstory before we saw Rooster in the bar for the first time would have been appreciated.. I like the flying sequences as much as anyone, but the writers didn't take advantage of the Cruise/Teller dynamic nearly enough. Teller is such a good actor. I would have liked to seen more of him. The story potential *was* a missed opportunity, big time.
