- Welcome to the next video in my series, Unshuffled, where I make lists of my favorite music! In this episode, I am ranking the Gentle Giant studio albums from "least favorite" to "favorite". I love all their albums to death, so there are no "worst" albums here. I just thought I'd share them in my order of preference. Please share your rankings in the comments! There are no wrong answers here! Thanks for watching, and there will be lots more ranking in the future!

4.-Octopus
3.-In A Glass House
2.-Free Hand
1.-Acquiring The Taste
Great list! Love the explanation for each of the albums. Not my list/ranking, but love what you're doing! Keep it up!
Thank you!! I really had a lot of fun making this one and plan more rankings. I’ve seen many of yours and always have so much fun watching those and seeing your opinions! Thank you for the encouragement!
Great list, Nathan!….I only discovered GG just over a year ago. For me, Acquiring the Taste is my favorite. Perigruel, The House…., Black Cat….wow!….I don’t consider this material experimenting…..this is the top of the flavor of GG that I like the best. Three Friends comes next for me. I just don’t connect with Octopus like everyone else does.
Nathan you’re really good at ranking albums. My favorite is also The Power & The Glory and I was probably the only person driving around Sacramento listening to the 8-track. I first heard them at a friend’s house and he played us Octopus and I was blown away. By the time I got some money the new album had come out so I bought that first.
In A Glass House is memorable for one listening when my ex was in the kitchen and she heard this glass breaking and screamed at me “ What are you breaking Rand? “ lol I was cracking up.
Thank you! I'm glad you also like Power and the Glory! Those are some cool stories, the glass breaking story in particular is really funny!
1) Acquiring the Taste, 2) Three Friends, 3) In a Glass House, 4) Octopus, 5) GG (1st)
These are the GG albums I like ( especially the first two).
For "Giant For A Day", "Missing Piece", and the debut, you hit the nail on the head for all 3 albums!! "Civilian" is grossly underrated. Is it like their earlier, core releases? No, but I think they were moving in the right direction. I've always wondered what would have happened had they stayed in L.A. and made one more!! I think it would have been spectacular. Oh well. You are spot on with these reviews, and perfectly stated... even your favorite tracks and mine are right on the money!!! Okay, back to listening to the show...
Outstanding show!!! I'm right with you, all the way down the line. I probably would have swapped "Octopus" and "In A Glass House", but they're both classic, must-have's in all prog fans collections!! I also love the way you chose specific snippets of your favorite tracks to represent the intro to each album. You picked perfect spots to extract, not only what is clearly a favorite highlight of the album for you, but also a fantastic "what you can expect to hear" clip for newcomers!! Great job, Nathan!!!
Thank you!!! I’m glad you liked my list and the song snippets I chose!
With GG being in my Top 3 Prog bands of all time, I'm very excited to plunge into this one today!!!
Just starting on my Gentle Giant journey. My first listen was In a Glass House (based on your dad's recommendation I believe) and I loved it. Next I heard The Power and Glory which I'm also very impressed by. I'm glad I finally got around to them and excited to hear the rest of their catalogue. I'll give my ranking once I've heard everything (might be a while since I like to spend a lot of time with new listens).
That’s awesome! Glad you are enjoying Gentle Giant! They are one of my all time favorites!
Your picks are spot on. Power and the Glory is my personal favorite.
GG is a lot of fun to listen to: so many instruments appear at unusual times during these songs. Tasteful listening every time!

What do you think of this list or the comment preceding it?
Awesome video my dude, this is probably one of the hardest bands to rank because of that 6-7 unbelievable run they had. Each album is its own vibe and imo are perfect in their own way. I am a long time prog fan but really only discovered GG about a year ago and my daughter (who's two) has really been going through this journey with me. We hear a lot of prog and diverse music at home but she has a special connection with Gentle Giant, is so cool to see. Her favourite songs are On Reflection (she calls it the 'hand' song), Advent of Panurge (the 'octopus' song) and Wreck (the tongue song).
Good job! I appreciate your rankings.
1. Free Hand
2. In a Glass House
3. Octopus
4. Three Friends
5. In'terview
6. Gentle Giant
7. Acquiring the Taste
8. The Power and the Glory (I know everyone seems to love this album...it doesn't connect with me).
9. The Missing Piece
Nice ranking!
I only started listening to Gentle Giant in July 2023. I bought the albums in date order but stopped at ''Interview'. Of those albums up to 1976 Three Friends is perhaps my favourite but I cannot rank the others to save my life. they are great albums.
Why did you stop at interview?
@@1359401 I have heard the last 3 albums on CZcams and they are OK but I'm reluctant to buy them. I may buy 'The Missing Piece' in the future. However, there are so many other prog and jazz fusion bands from the 1970s that I want to explore. Been listening to prog rock for 24 years yet I have barely scratched the surface! 😊
1 - The Power and the Glory
2 - Octopus
3 - In a Glass House
4 - Acquiring the Taste
5 - Three Friends
6 - Gentle Giant
7 - Free Hand
8 - Interview
GG is also my favorite band...with Peter Hammill being my favorite artist.
I hope my I've impacted my Son's as your father has impacted you😊
1. Free Hand
2. The Power & The Glory
3. Octopus
4. In A Glass House
5. Three Friends
6. Interview
7. Acquiring The Taste
8. Gentle Giant
9. Civilian
10. The Missing Piece
11. Giant For A Day
I enjoy title track of Glass House with the "glass finger" slide guitar. A great musical pun, lost on most listeners
I have no problem with Giant for a Day.
me neither
Power and the glory my no.1 as well..good choice!..and excellent presentation...
No "good vs bad". All albums had their moments. Music is magic. A song I might not care for could 7:17 be one that gets someone thru a hard time. GG are my favorite band.
Man these videos are awesome, would love to see you rank the Boston albums sometime, perhaps spocks beard? Keep doing what your doing Nathan, your killing it 🤘🏻
Thank you so much!
Hey Nathan!! I never heard of IZZ before your dad mentioned them in your Father's Day Combo show. I have since listened to bits and pieces on the web, and love everything I've heard so far. Do you have a Ranking of their catalog? I see they have a decent catalog thus far, but not sure where to start. Thanks if you can add that to your "to do" list. If you already created one and I simply couldn't find it, please provide the link. Thanks so much!!!
I have not done a ranking for IZZ yet- that would be a fun one to do, I’ll have to put it on my list!
The debut is way better than Civilian. Just an opinion of course.
Dripping with Juiciness !
I only had time to watch the first few minutes of this video. Playing the Fool is my favorite, but I get not including.
Will watch the rest later
Sounds good. Yeah, I can see how Playing the Fool could be the favorite. They reach another level when they play live! I have decided to focus on only studio albums in my rankings, partly because I'm biased, and don't really care for many live albums... I like watching live shows, but when I'm just listening to the music, I prefer the studio versions. But, I know many would disagree and prefer the live albums!
Acquiring the Taste is my absolute fave 😂 you kiddin'...followed by Three Friends and Octopus. But hey, that's the beauty of music and arts. It's all subjective.
His last voyage isn't Great fun it's a very sad Song.
I would rank Freehand and Octopus before In a Glass House.
I would do ranking videos, but then I would have to listen and rate every song and do the numbers and % of what I liked. Hahahaha it takes a lot longer to do.
But maybe now I do need to do one?
I can see ranking Free Hand and Octopus over Glass House. The top 4 are all very close to me, nearly interchangeable.
This ranking video did take extra time compared to my other videos, but I had fun with it!
I have come to learn to pretend that Giant For A Day was their only album and for me, in that mindset it’s a good pop rock album.
That is an interesting way to look at it. I'll have to think about that next time I listen.
@@NathanOnShuffle Perhaps you should play the whole thing for Jana since it’s more accessible?
I'd love to see you rank YES albums. I ranked them all on my blog. When you do we'll compare 😀
Yes, I'll definitely do that sometime in the future! I'm a little intimidated because their discography is so large and I'm not too familiar with their albums past Drama, but I look forward into getting into them! They are definitely on the album rankings short list.
@@NathanOnShuffle you can always just rank what you know 🙂
I have Octopus in nom 1
I really wished I'd devoted some time to GG but it never really happened. I've seen Three Friends on CTTE. Waiting for that studio album box set?
I think they are awesome, but they certainly aren't for everybody. I would love to see Three Friends- that is cool you saw them on CTTE! I miss out by not going on these cruises...
@@NathanOnShuffle they are the ultimate prog experience.
Civilian is G.Gs worst album by far the worst album they made
In'terview and Acquiring the taste are toooo much high in your list!!! You cannot put it better than the big 7 (O, IAGH, 3F, ATT, FH, 1, TPATG)!!!
You seriously put civilian over their classic debut, Really?
Yes, I did that 😊. The debut is great but Civilian is criminally underrated. Love them both though!
Ci vilian is their worst album by far
Acquiring the taste is a a masterpiece of prog.
Interview sucked Too not a good song that album exet for Empty city
Interview sucked Too not a good song that album exet for Empty city
Three Friends is their very best album.
Don'tshow the CDs show only the LPs
