The lead guy is so adorable. That's it! That's almost 100% correct. A couple of variations aren't quite like the original but it's close enough. I loved dancing The Madison. It's a lot of fun in a large group.
As far as i know this was the only linedance to hit Britain in the 50s. My 90 year old mum used to dance it. Funny how it all went quiet then bombed in the 80s.
Finally someone who knows how to do the rifleman and the birdland correctly. I am so sick of seeing the videos where when the dancers are called to do the birdland they start strutting around like they are an ostrich in heat..
I know! I've seen it too and it drives me nuts. I think somewhere along the way some started confusing it with the disco era "bird" maneuver with the back and forward bouncing head. The "birdland" has nothing to do with that.
I think the people who revived the dance in the 1990s learned the dance from the movie "Hairspray". The movie cut Birdland so these revivers made it up.
