The 'Switched at Birth' cast on their favorite words in ASL

  • Every time I interview the cast of 'Switched at Birth' I wish I spoke ASL and could therefore sign at least some of my questions to them. I'm terrible at languages, so the last time I was on set I asked the cast to teach me some of their favorite words, as well as some general ones that might come in handy for the future. Study along with me!

    This girl on my basketball team is deaf, and once I saw her interpreter I was like that is such an amazing language and I wanted to know how to sign so I can't talk to her cause know one talks to her on my team so I took the time to look sign language up and I finally went up to her after basketball practice and said good practice today and you should have seen her when I signed that to her she was so happy 😊 it made my day and she said thank you you too and I told her see you next practice😊😊 and I can't wait til Monday

      I think I saw somewhere she has a syndrome/disorder where she has intermittent hearing, but she makes a deaf accent really well. Especially since she's the only deaf character on the show we hear speak on a regular basis.

    • @ndlamont01
      @ndlamont01 Před 9 lety +72

      Erin Aulfinger She has Meniere's Disease so at times she has very good hearing and can hear very clearly and other days she may hear as if things are stopped up. Her hearing will decline gradually over the years and she'll be dependent on hearing aids by the time she's 30 (if she's not already using them regularly). I don't know her exact level of hearing but typically those with Meniere's are what I've described above. Some can go years without ever needing hearing aids and some don't even know they have it until they get older.

    I don't care what anyone says, I want to learn how to sign because of this show. There's so much beauty in ASL. I know that to some deaf people this isn't beauty but a way of life. I do not wish to be deaf at all. I simply think it's beautiful how expressive you have to be in order to show the tone in your voice. It's beautiful and I'm learning how to sign. This show shares the lives of actual deaf men and women, nothing glamorous about it. We need more shows with diversity within the scirpt/plot. I love this show so much!

      It is totally beautiful! I love the thought that must have gone into coming up with signs for each word, and how many of them actually look like what they are in real life, like the signs they showed for mosquito and candle and stiletto. I love the sign for 'understand' for this reason, like a little lightbulb popping up.

      Katie, who plays Daphne, a lot of her family members are actually deaf and have the same condition as her (menieres disease) so she was raised with both languages. I have a story to tell. When I was baby I was born deaf and when they actually found out when I was 2 so I didn't start learning signs till I was 8 years old. I kinda went through what dauphine went through when she was telling bay about what happen in the 3rd grade on switched at birth so I went to a deaf school and I think that Sign Language is the most beautiful thing in the world to ever learn and its really easy to!!!

      My husband's parents had just the idea, when my husband went to school, that he ONLY learned to talk. While he speaks very well, his hearing is almost totally gone now (I think they did a disservice to him not allowing him to sign...even tho he picked up alot) Sign is a beautiful thing to watch and the kids today are learning to talk AND sign....bilingual...how many of us can say that!!!!

      I hear ya. My speech was fine until I turned 1-2 yrs of age and my speech became incomplete and or inaudible. Drs. discovered my left ear drum was perforated thus making me hard of hearing. I had to get surgery to fix it, and even after I still had to go to speech therapy class Which was during school so i understand exactly how daphne felt with kids looking at you weird. I had to also learn sign language and Brielle as apart of speech and audiology classes. Although I am older and hearing is fine, it has been a while since I signed So I teach my kids and husband sign language when I can. Such a beautiful lanaguage. My professor in college would have me do the test for his students learning sign language and they always said " your faces are soooo expressive as if you were really deaf"...oh but if only they knew.

    I really wish we could have a show like this in the UK. I love learning BSL and a show similar to this would help people to recognise that this is a language that needs to be noticed and understood. There is so much stigma surrounding BSL in the UK and it saddens me because if it wasn't for shows like this, it wouldn't get the attention it deserves. A show like this would benefit my family a lot, especially my sister who is profoundly deaf and totally reliant on BSL because it would help her to understand that our situation at home is not totally unique. I applaud ABC for coming up with this show and I look forward to checking it out.

My husband has lost almost all his hearing, so I understand her character. She does her part VERY WELL. I work with 2 of the 3rd graders who can hear, so they are ahead of me signing and give me a hard time if I mess up....But I am slowly picking it up and am sooo much better than this time last year. I see that in the comments a lot of people use the lowercase version of the word "deaf" it is actually used with a upper case when you are referring to a Deaf individual or the community as well as the culture. Lowercase D in the word deaf is used for the medical terminology. Used by doctors and nurses to refer to the medical condition.

    well, I m hard of hearing but grew up in deaf family so buillgual language is my advantage but what disadvantage about hard of people is they may speak really well and some with accent (deaf people will view us "hearing" while hearing people will wonder hard of hearing people speak so well and expect us to understand every words they are saying which is not true, I m better with one at a time conversation. Katie from switch at birth make it sounds like she doesn't need to rely on interpreters or understand when people argue all at once and she joined in conversation which is not reality :-) I heard she is hearing loss so I can tell by her sign language is not really deaf but at least she is learning it pretty well. Emmett *Sean * is the first of the most beautiful ASL i ve seen for being deaf actor (Travis as well!) keep it up guys!

    I've never watched SaB but the second woman said the word "beautiful" and I was reminded of the deaf girl in the movie Miracle on 34th Street who Richard Attenborough surprised with ASL and she wasn't acting, she was really deaf and really didn't know that Santa would sign to her.

    For the people saying there are no captions you have options of having captions. I think this is likely on all CZcams videos now but I could be wrong. There is a little square that says cc on the video and if you click it you have captions.

    I didn't know that Vanessa and Laura are sisters! But now I see it they kinda have the same features. There's so much to this show that I didn't know! Like how Adriana is in Jane The Virgin!!

      And Vanessa played a few episodes in Grey's Anatomy! Oh, and Liam and Chef Jeff are also in Grey's, haha. aannnddd I think most people know this but Lea Thompson (Kathryn) was in Back to the future! so fun finding the actors in various show/movies without meaning to xD

    • @CassMartinez
      @CassMartinez Před 8 lety +4

      +Kayla Lee (ThatCrayCrayFish) hard of hearing is not a sometimes-hearing, sometimes-deaf thing. it's being able to hear, just significantly less than the average (hearing) person.

    ASL is a little bit different in different parts of America. It's never something too big of a difference but it's kind of like how people have northern, southern, midwestern, etc accents.

      @LilyZerep Před 10 lety

      Yeah in my ASL I class, our book had signs California style so our teacher had to teach us the signs that are different in San Antonio since there are no ASL books San Antonio style. But you're right it's not that much of a difference. :) Still love learning as much ASL as I can!

    What really inspired me was when Daphne was in the hospital and there was a patient (Daphnes friend) who was deaf, but there wasnt a translator in that night. If Daphne wasnt there the nurse would have given her medicine that would have killed her.

    I dont know if that was intentional or not but Bay (leaf) in greek translates to "δαφνη" (Daphne) and the word δαφνη (Daphne) in english translates to bay/bay leaf. So all this time Bay and Daphne had pretty much the same name ,it would honestly be so crazy if it was unintentional!
