  • The duo of Topsy and Eva who were played by the Duncan sisters turned this act into a career in the 1920 vaudeville era. This film however was made in the 1940's in their waning years and was nearing the end of blackface. Topsy & Eva still managed to draw audiences with this odd act for a few more years, but for the most part were abandoned like many other vaudevillian to the passage of time and tastes.
I am not posting this video to offend, but rather to educate viewers about past acceptable forms of entertainment. I understand how racist this video is.

My father, Hal Raynor, wrote The Termites Love Song in the mid q1930s, and my son, Scott, found it on the CZcams. The Duncan Sisters were friends of the family in the 1930s, but I had no idea they had performed the song. It was originally written for Joe Penner, the Wanna buy a duck? comedian. What a kick Kota hear it performed. Maybe we can find The Lobsters Love Song. It is just as corny and fun with puns. All your troubles will be bubbles

Famous is a subjective thing. They were never in the echelon of Clark Gable, Mae West or Betty Davis, but they were as famous as Ethel Purtle, the Boxing Gordon Sisters or Joseph Pujol. Were they ever well known might be a better question.
Yes, the Duncan Sisters were a well known act on the vaudeville circuit and they appeared in several Hollywood Movies. This particular act was made famous in vaudeville, but their movie performances never included Blackface until this movie 3 minute short. :D

Blackface is a theater tradition that still exists and is most often when performed by black actors and actresses used as a teaching aid. That was my reason for posting this film - history lost far too often becomes history repeated.
Admittedly Topsy was not a black actress, but she was one of the actresses best known for her blackface performances.
I am sorry if the film offends you and others, but I believe that even though Historically offensive - it is important to be remembered.
