All my CS sharpened machetes they are messy as you described, starting from the old Katana machete to the 2 Kopis and 2 Gladius machetes I got. My Kopis machetes had the largest burrs I've ever seen, noticeable without close viewing. May be due to some quality control in sharpening, but at least I've never heard of their machetes breaking. Decent price, too IMO.
Dangit...I was researching Borong machetes and why am I not surprised to find an IZ review. lol. Im ordering the new Borong asap. I was watching Dan Inosanto doing some drills with a Barong and was mesmerized at the speed and lethality of a trained knife fighter with a Barong.
I'm really digging the All Terrain machete. I have 2 Cold Steel Kukri machetes of different lengths and they are fine for home defense and yard work. My next would either be All Terrain, Jungle or that Gladius machete.
Ive owned a lot of the Cold Steel Machetes and you never know what your going to get as far as the edge goes. The same thing with the tempering. I've had a couple of their machetes that were so soft they were pretty much useless for actual work. But despite all that I still buy them because they are some of the coolest machete designs around. I haven't received any with a horrible temper for many years now so maybe they have that problem fixed. You can be sure your going to be doing some sharpening when you get one if you want a properly sharpened blade. It's strange but their knives always come with decent edges. Too bad they don't use that same level of quality control on their machetes. If they did we'd probably be paying a lot more money for them so I don't mind doing a little work on them.
They are definitely a good value and they have many options to choose from. I remember back in the day, all their machetes came without an edge, but their newer ones today usually come with a pretty good edge.
Thanks so much for this upload. I was waiting a long time for it. I really want that barong. I have the original 12" model and it chops like a champ. Probably my best big fixed blade. It out-choped my kabar large Bowie.
Very nice Barong. Like it. When I bought Magnum Kukri Machete it was completely dull. I had to sharpen it for an hour to get it to a decent sharpness. But I still like it and it was rather cheap.
Update on the Gerber friend! I showed him a RAT 1 and he loved the feel of it, and when I told him the price he said he'd check it out. Then he showed me his superior TacForce monstrocity...
I think they might "sharpen" those things with a hand file. I remember watching a vid on the Cold Steel site about doing just that. I tried that to get the coating off the edge of one of their machetes. Pretty much looked like that!
I think that the edges are rough because Cold Steel may be in a hurry to launch their 2013 product line. I gonna get one of those Cold Steel Best Pal push dagger and the serrated model haven't even arrived to the stores yet, only the plain edge version that has just arrived and I read somewhere on the comments of their official Cold Steel channel they say that would only laungh their 2013 products when they meet their criteria. Now I see these edges and I am almost sure they are in a hurry.
YAY more machete fun with israel! great video, thay allso incresed the thickness of the barong by 0.8 mm. i problem i have found with cold steel machetes is that the steel is burnt, and its burnt so bad that the edges you get on it will not last long. what i usualy do is that i grind off all the burnt steel and when i get on "good steel" i put the final edge on it.
That ATC looks like a mean chopper! I just bought the Magnum Kukri and the edge was horrible too. Took me a couple of hours to get it right. Other than that, nice machetes by CS.
I bought the barong machete for Christmas 2014, and it is good. The edge does take some work but not much. I have yet need to kill any zombies so it in my closet until the perdge later this year. Today it is $20 at amazon. Almost a can't lose buy.
Funny thing.... I ordered the All Terrain Chopper from a certain place, and received the Barong. Irritating. But now I have to decide whether to keep the Barong. Opinions?
I was really looking at the Barong Machete and hoping it would be better then the Falcutta (Spartan) Machete I bought from CS a few months ago. I love CS products but the Falcutta was the first big disappointment I've ever had with Cold Steel. They completely messed up the size/shape of it's handle. I do think the Barong will redeem them though. Thanks for sharing.
It's a shame the All Terrain Chopper is angled back from the tip instead of out from the tip (like the tanto style blade). I think I'm going to grind my Tramontina into a tanto. It makes it really nice for "tapping" vines and light vegetation when the end has a super sharp angle compared to the meat of the blade. I'm not familiar with the barong, but the point looks too dangerous for my uses.
Very nice, better sharpening than the old latin machetes The ATC is a bit weird, it balances like i imagine a pirate middle east saber would, the spine is angled up from the handle The two handed handle is a tad too high considering the machete with edge down Lasher writes that it only weighs 750 g, seems to weigh much more I wonder if i can put a double ... or triple edge on it
i've always interested in your sword/machete wielding style (when you like cutting water jugs with a machete/sword).. perhaps you could show some tutorial for it? if you refuse, it's okay anyway.
Hey, is there a way I can professionally contact you? Later this summer I am going to make a knife, and possibly produce a lot depending on how good they turn out. I want to send you the scale drawing I have and what your input on it would be. When I make one I would like to send you one to test and destroy (if you want). Please contact me If you would be so kind. My good friend Robert E. Lee V will start working on them after I order the material.
Budget machete HAH! There are ones at wallmart for 5 dollars, me and my friend compared the $5 piece of crap to my cold steel machete. Needless to say his machete was bent horribly and the handle broke, mine went through a ironwood tree which was about a foot in diameter.
+WeAllJuggleKnives I think it might have been this video, which made me buy a $10 Smith's Machete, and Axe Sharpener from Amazon, to sharpen my Barong Machete. It actually works really well for my swords to. Anyhow, mine'seedx sharp enough to cut through water bottles now, and it cuts very cleanly. I have a short 2 min video here, where I cut a bottle in 1/2 for my second time. I did a small std.12 fluid ounce bottle, and then I recorded myself slicing in 1/2 a 50 fluid ounce bottle, which had originally been a bottle of alkaline water. Anyways, I have 3 Filipino swords, although the C.S. Barong Machete could easily be counted as 4. Are you familiar w/ Ron Kosakowski's website "Traditional Filipino Weapons"? If no, search for their "Visayan Barong," read its specs, & then read Cold Steel's specs for their Barong Machete. They're almost identical...
I bought the all terrain chopper for the sole reason that it looks badass. My wife hates me when I drink beer and buy shit online.😂
Never know when you need a beast like it tho I got one too
Lol this is the reason mine left me, do NOT get into FPV drones! ;-)

Nice review. I prefer the Condor Barong. Better steel. Just wished it had a handle like the Cold steel barong.
Smart of you to show the rough, burred edge against the black of the one behind it. Makes it stand out a little better.

Thank you. It is technically a Push Tang, but I believe it goes all the way down to near the end. I'm not sure how wide it is.
Thanks so much for this upload. I was waiting a long time for it. I really want that barong. I have the original 12" model and it chops like a champ. Probably my best big fixed blade. It out-choped my kabar large Bowie.
Cold Steel Jungle Machete is good.
Yeah, they say it is a "springy" temper," they're flexible and not nearly as hardened as a knife, the hardness is probably low or mid 50s HRC.
Very nice Barong. Like it. When I bought Magnum Kukri Machete it was completely dull. I had to sharpen it for an hour to get it to a decent sharpness. But I still like it and it was rather cheap.
the edge on my gladius was literally ragged with spirals and burrs of steel sticking out as well
Update on the Gerber friend! I showed him a RAT 1 and he loved the feel of it, and when I told him the price he said he'd check it out. Then he showed me his superior TacForce monstrocity...
Search Amazon for "29 Inch Steel Machete with Sharpening Stone and Sheath, Emergency Zone Brand" - that machete comes with the free stone.
The handle is very good, I have 2 of the latins with the same handle, too.
Thanks for the peak at the new stuff, good vid. Looks like something I might pick up for the collection. Take care.
This was the video hahaha, of the kings!!

Thanks for posting this video! I got my 2013 CS Barong and I love it!!! I had to resharpen the edge as well...
You got to make them first, man :] Make a prototype and show it in a video, then I can give feedback and maybe review the final product down the road.

It can chop, although this one is not super heavy so won't chop as well as the Kris Cutlery Barong.
Funny thing.... I ordered the All Terrain Chopper from a certain place, and received the Barong. Irritating. But now I have to decide whether to keep the Barong. Opinions?
Good video juggle two bad ass blades from CS. Same old inconsistent edges we all kno to well. But will never stop buying cold steel!!!

Great video. Always get the info im looking for from your vids my friend!
I'd recomend them, because when it comes M-TECH machetes the price is right & the quality is great also you get them razor sharp right out of the box.
It's a shame the All Terrain Chopper is angled back from the tip instead of out from the tip (like the tanto style blade). I think I'm going to grind my Tramontina into a tanto. Thank you!
I bought one it’s a beast seriously.
It would do brush SHTF or your zombie apocalypse lol
For sure, they won't stand a chance
I'm about to get a machete, but I'm goin condor I think. Pack golok or engineer bolo. maybe the warlock. all due to your reviews too lol
Thanx, Israel, great info.
Hell yeah brother, I was waiting on this review!
I used to be a huge Cold Steel fan, but it seems lately that their entire product line suffers from QC issues. Thoughts?
Cool vid. Will you buy/show the new 24 inch bladed Two handed katana machete? I was waiting for it since thay announced it.
The shorter one is more multi-purpose.
sheck out the albinox renegade machete think you like the shape of it mate
i started working on a machete some days ago. im kind of mimiking the the condor warlock and the team fortress kukri.
My cold steel barong was made very heavy. It's 1lb 9oz heavier than the Kris cutlery barong. And it's very slow and blade heavy.
haven't tried them
Very nice, better sharpening than the old latin machetes
The ATC is a bit weird, it balances like i imagine a pirate middle east saber would, the spine is angled up from the handle
The two handed handle is a tad too high considering the machete with edge down
Lasher writes that it only weighs 750 g, seems to weigh much more
I wonder if i can put a double ... or triple edge on it
how thick the barong is ? nice revew by the way
I bought this a few years ago. I like the blade but I don't like the handle. It looks cheap and it's not so gripy
i've always interested in your sword/machete wielding style (when you like cutting water jugs with a machete/sword).. perhaps you could show some tutorial for it? if you refuse, it's okay anyway.
Did you ever get the real cold steel barong
Who makes a nice quality Barong for a reasonable price that would be nicer than the CS machete with nice finish and balance?
chopped 26 ga steel u profile clean , borang is good...
very good video and very useful but that's no surprise from you.
is the barong machete a chopping machete or just good for cutting?
That is awesome stuff thank you :D witch one out of the 2 do you think is better?
LOL. Well ... I have six Nepalese Kukris from Nepal ... I'll post a video of them soon.
how thick the barong is ?
Why would you have a twisted handle like the Baron? Can someone explain that? Looks very uncomfortable.
The handle shape lets you swing it as hard as you can, without the handle sliding out the top of your grip.
Hey, thank you for accepting the video response!

Where do you get free stones from?
I would keep it, sounds like fate!
That Barong is Coming With Me to Mexico or some Clone of One, And An Karambit
It's dangerous down there, don't go, bro!
@@WeAllJuggleKnives Ay My Own Kind Likes to steal from Their Own Kind, I got to go
OMG! They are finally here! except for their smatchet...
Budget machete HAH! There are ones at wallmart for 5 dollars, me and my friend compared the $5 piece of crap to my cold steel machete. Needless to say his machete was bent horribly and the handle broke, mine went through a ironwood tree which was about a foot in diameter.
William Joseph for which one
Looks god sir !
Cold Steel machetes are too thin for wood. They are for jungle i think.
+kiba BG Or brushlands or swamp.
Yes, i guess i am living in the mountains so its not usable for me.
+kiba BG its called an axe
clovehitch an axe ;)
What do you sharpen it with?
I use a Work Sharp Sharpener, now.

An easier trick will be to loan grandpa's old leather belt and strop it.
Have you ever owned an M-TECH machete?
i could repair both of those edges for a cheap price 25 bucks a piece on those blades
Cold Steels quality is slipping. They need to get back on their game.
Hello ! If you get a chance check out "THE SHRADE SCHBOLO MACHETE." It Is An Amazing Bolo Machete. Thank You for Your Time.
Cool or should i say Cold get it lol :)
First boo ya oh yeah
Convex bo'f of 'em!
First oh yeah
