      Thank you Nicola - it was such a joy just untangling them, I can't wait to start stitching with them. I still have the baler twine you sent me too, I've not forgotten, it's nearly at the top of the list now! I have some recycled plastic strapping to make the base of some baskets I plan to make with the twine instead of willow - watch this space! :)

    The little tags are wonderful! Please do make a digital scan of them so they could be printed on paper or on fabric. I personally would love to use such fabric to make needle books! Lovely things lovingly preserved. And you are not “weird” to save them - they are historical ephemera!!! Please do consider selling a digital download of the scan. I would love to buy one!! 💜

      Thanks Catherine, that's a great idea to do a digital scan - I've been given a few other ideas for what to do with them as well, so I'm going to see if I can manage to scan without actually sticking them down. It would be perfect for needle books wouldn't it, what a wonderful idea! :)

    Hallooooo, darling! Those threads were well tangled and I totally get how satisfying it must be to get them sorted. You've made enormous progress since the stream! My hands are twitching with the longing to hold them and feel how soft...sigh. Such delicious colours, Annie. I badly wish I could sew/embroider. You really lucked out with this amazing purchase, didn't you? I can think of no one else who'd love these bits and bobs the way you will and I'm greatly looking forward to seeing you use them in coming creations. I also love that you saved every little thing and I'd have done the exact same! ADORE the colour palette as well - simply beautiful! Much Love and Bless, dear friend xoxoxo

      It was HUGELY satisfying LIndsey and I wish you could feel them too. When I first bought the box, I felt a bit guilty about the spend, but it's given me so much joy already, it was worth every penny. Since I filmed this, I've put a bid on a collection of empty wooden cotton reels in an old sweetie tin on eBay, turns out the lady lives nearish to me so if my bid wins I may be able to pick them up and save the postage. I also found some teeny new but wooden bobbins on Amazon. And I've been given a few great ideas for using the little labels too. Cannot wait to get stuck in now :)

    Annie, I love your plan for stitching with the beautiful vintage threads, and incorporating the other lovely finds into your project! I love hand embroidery! One thing you might try, to use the delicate butterfly design, is to trace it onto tissue paper. You can then pin that onto your background fabric, and embroider over the lines. After it is finished, the tissue paper can be gently pulled away and any lingering bits removed with tweezers. Or, if you have a light box, you might trace the design directly onto your background fabric with a wash-away marker for needlework. Not vintage, but extremely useful! Have fun with your dictionary!

    • @artyfartyannie

      Thank you Lynn, I'm glad you like the plan, let's hope I can put it into action now! Thank you so much for that idea, I do have a light box and never thought of using it for embroidery designs, brilliant, I'll definitely try that :)

    Gosh you got loads of usable thread out of the nest of gorgeousness. Those tags maybe photo shop them into a design then you could use the sticky paper through a printer place on fabric use the threads embroidery style. Gosh hope this makes sense. Tori used the paper sticky stuff just recently you place in water and the paper disappears leaving your stitches behind. Since you have the dye lots could be very pretty but I guess loads of work still think this could be very effective though. Aww I’m very excited to see you start using these threads. Love the colour way for fabric so pretty kind of apricot very pretty. The box is wonderful wonder if you can make it usable for your cottons on those cardboard holders rather than plastic. I think on call the housewife’s the lady in the shop has pulled a box out like this a few times but maybe I’m wrong. Have fun and can’t wait for the next update on this wonderful project. Also congratulations on tackling the nest of gorgeousness and saving those wonderful threads. Aww can see beads and a fancy necklace out of the left overs.

      Oooh yes, took me a minute to work out what you meant, but yes! that would look amazing wouldn't it? I think you're right, the box would be a great place to store my threads, I've already found some teeny wooden bobbins I can use so I don't have to spoil the whole thing with plastic. I'm fascinated to see if I can spot a similar box in the haberdashers in Call the Midwife. I@m going to be watching out in any period drama haberdashers now - mind you the background sets in those things always fascinate me, would have loved to do that for a living :)

    Sorry, off topic but I had to actually rewind it as I thought I’d misheard you say you were 63! I want whatever you’re on please as I had you down for 15yrs younger!! Those threads are gorgeous, worth all those late nights I reckon. I look forward to seeing your projects with them 😊x ps the wood pulp is probably what we know as viscose/rayon today.

    • @artyfartyannie
      @artyfartyannie  Před 7 měsíci +1

      hehe thank you very much, that's so kind of you to say - good to read this as I feel every one of my 63 years today :D Yes you're absolutely right about the viscose/rayon I reckon, I had to look it up when I read this - these threads must have been forerunners to rayon even though they weren't called that, as they were made with wood pulp as an alternative to silk. I've just been reading that sadly, although viscose/rayon used to be seen as a kinder, more sustainable alternative to silk, it's become an environmental problem these days. Still, all the re-using, upcycling and repurposing that we slow-stitchers do is definitely environmentally-sound as well as very satisfying! :)

    What a yummy pile of orts! And it still looks like a lot. Some of those silks look like they would work with your teacup color inspiration stitching. I wonder if the wood pulp threads are what we refer to now as rayon or viscose. What a gorgeous palette you've created for your vintage stitchery project.

    • @artyfartyannie
      @artyfartyannie  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes indeed Sue, the most delicious orts EVER! And yes, they would work with my CIJ moodboard too wouldn't they? It did occur to me that those threads would have represented quite an investment for Miss Cheetham, I mean real silk embroidery thread is pretty expensive these days, probably would have seemed even more pricey then. Wish the company still existed, I'd write and congratulate them on how well the colours have lasted and how most of them at least are still usable after all these years. Yes you're right I looked it up, rayon/viscose is made from wood pulp so this thread was at least a forerunner to rayon as an alternative to silk. Another interesting titbit I've learned on this little vintage adventure :)

    What a lovely stash of vintage goodies. I was thinking that perhaps you could hake a little drawstring bag from vintage organza and pop the tiny labels in there, that way you could take them out if you desire to go through them again. If you don’t have vintage organza, I do, and a few different colour A4 size pieces would easily go in a card. Let me know.

    • @artyfartyannie
      @artyfartyannie  Před 7 měsíci +1

      That is such a lovely idea Kathy - now I'm thinking I'll try and scan them without sticking them down, so I can print them on to fabric or whatever but still keep them in a little bag. Sue also gave me the idea of stringing some of them like little buntings across one of the pages and there have been a couple of other ideas as well I'd love to try. So first thing is to see if I can get them to sit still while I scan them, or get a really good photo ... wish me luck! Yes please to a piece of vintage organza if you're sure you don't mind sending it, you're in Australia aren't you? If not, I'm sure I could maybe use some of that really fine cotton I showed maybe, or some lace or something. I'll have a rummage :)

      We're not alone in our enjoyment of these vintage treasures are we? I used to just keep things to look at and enjoy just for the sake of it, but I have to say these days I tend to think that if I can make good use of vintage materials like fabrics, threads, buttons, books and so on, it's better to enjoy them. I guess f it was something really valuable or in perfect condition, maybe I'd feel differently but I mostly pick up things that aren't valuable because they're a bit damaged, which only makes them more beautiful to me. I do try to preserve and use everything if I can, like the little labels - I just cannot bear to throw anything like that away :)

    the labels - wonder if they would stand up to the hand cream or konjakku treatment to make them more fabric-y pliable, sew them onto pieces a bit like neck labels in clothes ?
    orrrr....set in thin layer of acrylic ( i know, plastic yuk) but would see both sides, could use as coasters, place mats, key fobs, ear rings??

    • @artyfartyannie
      @artyfartyannie  Před 7 měsíci

      thank you Tigg, I do have some konnyakku powder, so I could definitely try that really gently on a couple, it might make them a bit more durable as you say, so I could then stitch them onto fabric - someone else suggested making them into mini bunting which would be cute. I do have UV resin as well that I could set them in, but not sure I could bear to do it to them! :)
