Since I'm comfortable around mini excavators up to 15k pounds I want to start a side hustle that can hopefully turn full time. my problem is knowing what license I need. I’ve got two questions for anybody that’s an operator. I worked for Road and Bridge for two years now and I am currently moving to another state. I’ve been looking for other jobs to better myself and to set myself up to start my own business sometime in the near future. I started working for Road and Bridge at 21 because they were the only company in my area at the time that would hire me with no experience in heavy equipment. I learned quickly that I was not going to start my own road and bridge business but I love the equipment side of the job.
    My first question is this: is it worth the time and money to get certified in heavy equipment (I’ve never even heard of a heavy equipment certification until recently)
    My second question is what kind of work would best set me up for my future business?
    I’d assume digging foundations would be the answer but I really don’t know. I don’t know what kind of business I want to start either. All I know is I enjoy running equipment and according to my co workers, I’m really good at it for how short of time I’ve been in this trade.

    • @Mike-nn3tf
      @Mike-nn3tf Před 10 měsíci

      I’ve never heard of anyone asking for certifications outside of big union infrastructure jobs and that would be through their apprenticeship program. Most places just want references they can call to make sure you actually worked in the trade, and usually they’ll put you in a machine as part of the interview.
      If you’re looking to start your own company i recommend working for a small to medium residential/light commercial excavating contractor. That will give you time doing a variety of aspects of the business and learning about how things get set up and planned with a small crew versus a big contracting company.

The biggest thing is understand how the dirt in your area works and what sorta restrictions/requirements the local government has on certain jobs.
